Moderated Weather balloon in the news?

midmoastro

First it was spotted over Montana? I think? Today at lunch break the KC NWS said there was an object in the NW and they confirmed it was not their weather balloon. Well, thanks to the Mach2 and Keypad, I was able to quickly get this video over my lunch break :-)
Hope to process it more later, this is just a quick post of what I got from video.

That may be the Chinese balloon that’s been in the news. Seems it was spotted a few days ago.

As a lawyer, my eyes were drawn to the Chinese statement that the balloon was _mainly_ for meteorological purposes.  I suspect that statement is true.  Mainly.

I think that image has some tilt in it.  It must have been taken by a Chinese camera.

A little better image than the original and I tried to bring out a little more detail.

Here is one way to track it.

Oh my!

It seems to be circling over Nashville.  There goes all of our country music intel.  What next?

You should have shot it down :>)

The last thing we want to do is to shoot it down. Given its altitude and its lack of IR emissions, this would require some form of active terminal guidance using radar. The sensors on the balloon would pick up these RF emissions and that could be valuable intelligence. In fact, I suspect that was what was intended all along. The whole scenario might have been to provoke US authorities into shooting it down, under pressure from the public.

Just reel it in and find out what's in the box. Poke a small hole in the balloon and let it drift gently down to earth Smile

There's a story from many years ago (apparently legit but who knows) that a similar balloon was shot at with "a thousand" rounds from a jet and did not fall.  When you think of the surface area of something like that, and the size of a bullet hole, that kind of makes sense.  And those 1000 rounds did fall to earth somewhere.

I would love to see the US test some of its new laser weapons on it though.  (Though to someone's point, that tells the enemy a lot also).

Those lasers use AP mounts don't they?   :)

Though if they did, you would have to say "no" of course, so never mind.  :) :)

Maybe a jet flyover with a hook on a cable, to rip it.

Are those solar heat towers (many panels directing light to a central point) aim-able?

Maybe a drone that can paint an uncomplimentary image of Xi on it, 30' high, might deter them in the future?

Come on... we have so much ingenuity in this country, do we really have to just let it float on by?

We know what is in the box or we would have already mitigated the issue.
