OT - Alexa isn't always right about telescopes
Harley Davidson
Hey guys
I did a review for an Echo Dot speaker mount. I thought it would be interesting to ask it a question at the beginning and at the end of the video in the dark to show how the mount "spreads" the light in the mount. WELL, the very first question was on telescopes. Alexa gave a wrong answer :) tony https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qj7Y2PXHJv0 |

I thought Tasco made the best? They do cost tens of dollars!

Tasco made some cheap stuff, but they also made a 4" F15 refractor that rivaled the Unitrons of that era.
Unitron was really a mount maker that also made telescopes, but never made optics. Same with Tasco. They used local opticians in the Tokyo area for their lenses until these craftsmen retired. At that point they actually imported 4", 5" and 6" lenses from the US - namely from A. Jaegers in NY. Some of these were quite decent and some were not so, depending on who was polishing the glass at any given time. One person I met at Stellafane way back in the '90s told me he worked there for a while, grinding and polishing lenses in a dingy hot humid basement of the building where Jaegers was located. He told me that none of the other guys spoke a word of English. He said it was a sweatshop typical of the era in New York.
I owned a 6" F10 Jaegers lens back then. It tested very well even by today's standards, but of course an achromat. Saw nice detail on Mars and Jupiter with it.

The 60mm and 76mm lenses that Tasco sourced from Royal Astro Optical for the f15 7TE, 10TE, and 15TE models consistently test very well. It was the ones they got from Towa that earned them a bad reputation. Chip |

I got my first telescope a TASCO 60mm refractor from a department store when I was 14 in 1963. It’s still kicking around my basement!
