Mach 2 guiding

With my Mach 2, I started off in PHD2 using the guidelines in the following video:

I find though, that disabling variable exposures in PHD2 (essentially treating the Mach 2 as a normal mount but with zero periodic error) gives me more stable guiding results.

Are the settings there meant to be used only if a sky model is in use?

For me one of the best things about the Mach 2 is that once you have built a sky model, you can entirely eliminate the guiding.
 
I haven't opened PHD2 in the last 2 years.
