IC 348, NGC 1333, VdB 12, VdB 13, Barnard 1, 2, 3, 4, et. al. - A Perseus Wide Field

Dean Jacobsen

Hi All,

Just posted the first draft of another wide field.  This one captures the IC 348 and NGC 1333 area.

https://www.astrobin.com/full/71y9d3/0/

Unfortunately in a major framing blunder I cut off VdB 16 at the bottom of the frame and didn't notice until about 2 hours along.  :-)

This was 5 hours unguided with the Mach2 - 100 frames at 180 sec. per frame exposure time.  All 100 had nice round stars and were used in the stack.

Taken with the FSQ-106 at f/3.6 with the 645 reducer and using the ASI2400MC Pro camera.

Really cool framing Dean.  You went the other way from NGC1333 from a recent image I did.  I didnt realize there was that nice HA area that you captured.  I'll need to check that out sometime.  Very nice image!

Thanks for taking a look Chris.

Yes, your recent image of the other side of NGC 1333 is very nice... and you also had sufficient situational awareness to get Vdb 16 in the frame too.  :-)

The next project - hopefully in a couple of days if the weather cooperates - is north and just a little east and centered on LDN 1402.  There is a string of a bunch of dark nebula up there that the 5.5 degree wide field of view of the FSQ + reducer + ASI2400 should work well with.  This link is to a wide field image of that area - https://www.astrobin.com/20kzi2/B/   It looks like a potentially promising area to image.

When you can't get out to take images because the weather doesn't coooperate, there isn't much that you can do except "update" images...  :-)

I updated this one this morning to try and bring out more detail in teh dust and dark nebula areas:

Thanks Stuart and Karen!

I'm going to have to stop looking at this one because since the last update I decided I didn't like that left-to-right red gradient and decided to do something about it... which created more things to fix.

https://www.astrobin.com/full/71y9d3/H/

So I'm just going to stop looking at this one.  :-)

I um.... uploaded yet another revision in the ongoing saga regarding this image...

I thought I might be able to bring out more of the dust in this area.  At this point I don't know if I made it better or worse. :-)

I wish that it would stop raining so I can go out and get another couple of images to distract me.

https://www.astrobin.com/full/71y9d3/J/

At least I can say it was made with the Mach2.  Running unguided.  Three line declination arc model with a portable setup.  Three minute exposures.

Yup, better in my opinion. If you keep going like that you will eventually discover all that dark matter that's supposed to be out there.

🙂

Thanks for looking.  I might need a little larger aperture to get that dark matter stuff through.

Dean,
It's astonishing what's out there, you've revealed so much smoky dust, that it looks like you were imaging through a forest fire. It's a stunning image.
Regards,

Geof

Thanks for the kind words Geof.   I have tried to assemble the best mount, camera and optics for my wide field imaging rig and now I am finding that the most significant factor in the quality of my images is my own processing skills.  Each time I have another go at this data I am able to do a little better.  This last version was a complete re-do from the linear state.  I applied what I had learned from the previous 9 versions and came up with something a little bit better.

I agree that it is astonishing what is out there.  That’s what makes this hobby so compelling.
