Guiding on my plate again - NEED TO IMPROVE

Hi Steve,

Roland - might be time to download the PHD2 log viewer - simple to use and will let you see all of the guiding data:
https://openphdguiding.org/phd2-log-viewer/
IMO, PHD2 has become too complicated for most people, which goes against its original roots. Thus, I think people should first seek support for PHD2 on its forum. This will help Roland and other key A-P personnel stay focused on producing new and advancing existing products instead of supporting settings for PHD2.

If the PHD2 forum believes there is a problem that would be better solved on this forum, then the problem should be brought up here.

Hey Ray,

Roland asked for screenshots, which imho, is an inefficient way to share data.  As a lot of people post their actual PHD2 logs whenever they are having problems, having access to the PHD2 log viewer and so not having to ask for screenshots seems like a step up, no?  Roland will of course decide for himself how much time he wants to spend debugging issues like this.  And yes, fully agree that cross posting on the PHD2 forum and seeking help there would be a good idea.

Hi Steve,

I understand that Roland asked for more information. He wants to help! :-)

My point was this - the subtleties and growing complexity of PHD2 has made the analysis of PHD2 log files better suited to the folks on the PHD2 forum. 99.9% of the time the autoguiding "issue" is simply a settings or calibration issue, so I think the people on the PHD2 forum should have a first crack at looking at the issue. :-)

I agree.  The iterations of at least three image acquisition programs, and multiple guiding programs available among the list, make it a daunting task to keep up with all of them.

SGP can use Metaguide and PHD2, NINA can use at least PHD2 and maybe others, and Voyager can utilize PHD2 and MaximDL.

Roland's responsibility is to his mounts and the native drivers and software offered by his company.  I cannot imagine asking him to do more than he is currently offering.

Well I'll be the contrarian :)

No one knows these mounts better than Roland.  Empowering him with tools like PHD2 log viewer so he can see the issues people are reporting seems like it can only help the broader community and make his job easier.  Being dependent on people posting the "right" screen grab and only being able to see a tiny subset of the information cannot be very productive.

Of course, Roland will decide whether and how much time he can spend analyzing any such requests for help.    And yes, any apparent issues involving PHD2 should absolutely be reported on the PHD2 forum, but often after initial analysis over there the recommendation can be to go back to the mount manufacturer and seek support there...

fwiw I'm happy to offer my input on any logs or questions regarding PHD.

I have been a regular contributor on the PHD forums for the past few years, and keep in contact with the developers. I am fairly confident in my PHD knowledge, and analyze about 5-10 logs per day across many different mounts.

and I'm an AP owner to boot :) Not yet as familiar with my AP yet as I am with PHD.

Please don't be. I understand quite well where Ray is coming from on this. I often have to play support agent for other apps and hardware, both free and commercial, because the first place the user sees an error or issue that stems from such underlying systems is presented in the app I work on. So the first place they end up seeking help is our forum and, for some reason, the user will often think that we can somehow render better support than the vendor they purchased the gear from or the producers of the other application. It's a real distraction. PHD2 has its own support venue for a purpose and their developers pay close attention to it, thus PHD2 mysteries can best be resolved, or at least triaged, there.

Let's not forget that someone seeking for support often doesn't know the exact cause of the problem. It's rarely (never?) black or white... Ron is asking for help to assess if his Mach1 could have an issue causing his bad guiding results. He's not affiming the problem comes from PHD2 neither from his mount.

As he mentionned in is initial post, he has got good results at times and did a fair amount of troubleshooting to rule out other possibilities. It seems his best guess was that the mount itself had a problem at this point and that's probably why he posted his question/results/logs on this forum. Brian's input may have pinpointed some optimization could be done with some PHD2 settings (very interesting analysis BTW), but I don't think Ron was wrong at all posting here first...

IMO, supporting a system will always require multidisciplinary effort from both software producer and hardware manufacturer. And it can only help, if both parties can understand / use each other's languages / tools to support their common customer...

It doesn't show what I was requesting. Yes it shows several places where the star went off in both RA and Dec but also shows that the mount then responded correctly to bring it back. So we don't know if the star faded and the centroid was calculated in the wrong place, or what was the reason for the apparent motion. In the attachments that I sent there is vital information in the first image that is missing in your attachment. This information allows analysis of the health of the mount versus the health of the guiding software. They are two different things that have to be untangled.

Some things I look for are motions in Dec guided and unguided. When a mount is unguided, the DEC axis stays perfectly still and any excursions of the guide star cannot be attributed to a mount problem. When guided, I look for actions that are opposite to the commanded positions. If the mount gets a command to move north, but goes south momentarily, then we have a static friction problem that can be fixed or addressed a number of ways. Sudden random motions of the Dec axis with no apparent command are an indication that something external is disturbing the mount (perhaps a pulling wire on the guide camera or other external mechanical disturbance). These are just a few of a whole host of issues that I have seen and dealt with on customer mounts.

It helps me if the user can take a couple of screen shots, rather than having me spend hours examining their log files.

There is nothing "wrong" with posting anything relevant to Astro-Physics mounts here.

However, it was suggested that Roland should download the PHD2 log analyzer and learn how to use that. I think that was crossing the
line for an Astro-Physics mount forum. There is a perfectly capable group of people on the PHD2 forum that are ready, willing, and
able to do just that (including Brian Valente, whom I am sure everyone appreciates his PHD2 feedback on this forum!).

That being said, what Dale said is true in his post on this issue. An unfortunate side effect of our astro-imaging software and
hardware ecosystem being so "plug and play", is that cross-product support has become much more difficult. It's huge time sink to
try to learn all of the different software and hardware platforms.

Thus, it would be helpful if issues regarding a product be directed first to the vendor of that product, which in this case could be
either A-P or the PHD2 developers. However, since auto-guiding and log analysis were brought up, I think the PHD2 forum would have
been the better choice. The best case is that the PHD2 forum will have an easy answer. The worst case is that they will direct the
issue back to the A-P forum.

As an example of why the PHD2 forum is preferred, what if the specific auto-guiding issue Ron posted about was because he was using
a version of PHD2 that has a known bug? How would Roland know about that?

BTW, my feelings about this apply to my software, PEMPro. I know people post here and on other forums, but I would prefer they post
issues on the CCDWare/PEMPro forum. If you don’t know where that forum is, there is a link to it in PEMPro's help menu!

And yes Brian Valente came to the rescue by swooping in and donating his expertise. I SURELY appreciate it as I'm sure Roland would too. If not hardware related or Rolands area of expertise of support then surely he only need pass over it.
The problem with asking in the PHD support area is my voice (which is rather experienced with PHD) will be lost in the flurry of noob inquiries about why they shouldn't calibrate on the pole star ;-)
People need to chill.  All is good. Jesus is at the helm.

While I'm here - spreading good cheer, is there any white papers on making a pointing model. I have had APCC pro for 4 years or so and never ventured into that. (it will help with guiding yes?)
or even a step by step using Prem Pro?  I tied it once when I first got it but I believe I didn't do it right.  It's been years - surely there are some nice videos? or step by step documents now you can point me to?

thanks! Merry Christmas!

Yes, it should help with guiding!

APPM attempts to make the process of collecting pointing data very simple. At least as simple as it can be. :-)

There are tabs to do the following:

* Optionally setup general information (Mount Type, name, telescope, etc.)

* Setup camera frame size and exposure time.

* Setup plate-solver configuration.

* Setup the measurement points.

Once you setup those tabs, then on the Run tab you connect to the mount and camera.

All that's left is to click "Start" and watch it go.

A good starting place for instructions is to click one of the context-sensitive Help buttons. For reference, I have a screenshot here:

You can start by reading this link (which is also in the APCC Help file):

THANKS RAY - I will try to venture into that. If it will help guiding I'm in. I thought it was for pointing accuracy... (like goto) and I'm always dead on.  I'll explore this on a good night.

Brian - positive feedback last night. Although I should not have bothered. Atmospheric said  "don't open the dome".
Still I tried in a gap in the IR-radar and considering the most horrible conditions. (all brighter stars looked like they were shot in the fog). SNR and SM jumping around... instead of 1.60  I was getting an average of .80 !    Not great but considering the conditions I was pleased.
I even had some .59 tot rms during short windows.  I'll attach a snap from the log - I tried to select the "best air" of the night which as you will see... it still horrendous, but I for .79 for this stretch.  I'll not bother sending you the log until I get a better night. But initial tests show promise!  *Not a single test sub was good - Looked like headlights in the fog.

I'll be back when conditions allow me to test in decent conditions
Not where I'd like to be - but reduced my RMS err to about 50% of previous err so far.

Ray - although it's day time I thought I'd familiarize myself with APPM -
scope dome connected, camera (some problems) I was gonna request that you add NINA ?
It's the fastest growing acquisition program.  In functionality and user base! It will be the standard.

I see SGP is listed but I uninstalled it after 2 years of use.  No need to go back.
hoping ascom camera will work for now. just  FYI. thanks.

A good starting place for instructions is to click one of the context-sensitive Help buttons. For reference, I have a screenshot here:

There are a number of videos online, but you should start by checking out the help file section for Astro-Physics mounts in PEMPro’s Help file (accessible from PEMPro’s Help menu).

For your reference, here are the step-by-step instructions for using PEMPro with an Astro-Physics mount. Again, this is a copy of what is already in the help file:

Yes, it should help with guiding!

APPM attempts to make the process of collecting pointing data very simple. At least as simple as it can be. :-)

There are tabs to do the following:

* Optionally setup general information (Mount Type, name, telescope, etc.)

* Setup camera frame size and exposure time.

* Setup plate-solver configuration.

* Setup the measurement points.

Once you setup those tabs, then on the Run tab you connect to the mount and camera.

All that's left is to click "Start" and watch it go.

Hi Ron,

The (upcoming) v1.9 of APCC Pro will support ASTAP.

I think Dale was considering emulating SGPro's API interface so APPM could use use it, but I am not sure where that stands.

OH THIS IS COOL.   Figured I'd not wait for the update - and installed SGP again.  Set it up... now running APPM trial run.
its doing all sorts of cool stuff. (I unchecked solve for test).  It seems to be doing points that are way to low for my horizon.
Will it "skip" abort when it has nothing to solve or do I turn off points or can it use my APCC custom horizon?  It seems to have
toggled that off.
It's shooting pics of the inside of the dome. Can't wait for stars.
Maybe I could run out there with a market and jot a star map real quick. ;-)

Ron the plate solve will fail and it will move to the next point

OH THIS IS COOL.   Figured I'd not wait for the update - and installed SGP again.  Set it up... now running APPM trial run.
its doing all sorts of cool stuff. (I unchecked solve for test).  It seems to be doing points that are way to low for my horizon.
Will it "skip" abort when it has nothing to solve or do I turn off points or can it use my APCC custom horizon?  It seems to have
toggled that off.
It's shooting pics of the inside of the dome. Can't wait for stars.
Maybe I could run out there with a market and jot a star map real quick. ;-)

Hi Ron,

The (upcoming) v1.9 of APCC Pro will support ASTAP.

I think Dale was considering emulating SGPro's API interface so APPM could use use it, but I am not sure where that stands.
