APPC Pro functionality I didn't know: Goto by Hour angle
Andrea Lucchetti
This is just to express my satisfaction, as I discovered this little gem in APPC.
In my workflow the first step is to point at DEC=0 and Ha=1, to refine focus, calibrate guider and start the model. Had a look at the manual and.. it was there! I had to change the topic from "please add this fuctionality" to the new one, just wanted to share that , I am so happy:-) this saves me a planetarium software, about 10 min, and give me a much leaner applications start up workflow I suspect there are many useful things in APCC pro I don't know yet. Thank you Andrea |

I was thinking about this last month to make getting a proper autoguider calibration easy. Glad you posted this! I am guessing we just need to check the box "Use Hour Angle" and then set the values in the RA/DEC before hitting GoTo? Does anyone know if you can put a negative value in for the RA hour to get to the other side of the meridian?

Not to take ANYTHING from APCC, but you can slew to the meridian and Dec=0 in PHD2 from the Tools -> Drift Align. Then close the Drift Align dialog and calibrate as usual.

And I thought I knew PHD2 very well after all these years(decades). Thanks for that info Bryan, I will give that a try also since I will be in PHD2 anyway.

>>>Not to take ANYTHING from APCC, but you can slew to the meridian and Dec=0 in PHD2 from the Tools -> Drift Align. Thanks Bryan - Yes that's a good point. There are a number of ways to get to that point in the sky. I like the hour angle feature in APCC because it's a relative position to the meridian, and can be used for a lot more than just slewing to the meridian. I use it a lot when testing for flexure or other issues that may be sky related. If you didn't know about this feature, you'd have to calculate RA or use a third party app. With hour angle enabled, it's simple to use from APCC. Not to take anything away from PHD2 😀 (I think Bryan was referring to the functionality tips in the release video here: https://youtu.be/7r2qujy8BkM?t=595 ) Not to take ANYTHING from APCC, but you can slew to the meridian and Dec=0 in PHD2 from the Tools -> Drift Align. Then close the Drift Align dialog and calibrate as usual. --

oop I see Bryan was responding to an earlier thread. Regarding part of the original question on how to use negative values, yes you can enter negative hour angle to go opposite side of pier. If you need to get within a few minutes of the meridian, you can use -0 in the HA and just enter the minutes here's an example of GoTo with coordinates -0 HA 55 minutes vs. 0 HA 55 minutes I do like the HA feature in APCC, and as the op pointed out it's one less thing that's needed if all you need is an hour angle reference
