AP900 and C14

Last month I purchased my fist AP mount (AP900 goto). I own several Chinese mounts and had a friend convince me to buy a 16 year out AP900 instead of a brand new, less expensive, iOptron CEM70. I am extremely happy I went with the AP, I had no clue what an amazing difference in quality and elegant engineering design AP mounts have.

I am equally impressed with all the online support offered by this community.

I do have a question: I’ve been using a C11 on that mount and getting best tracking I’ve ever gotten. I’m buying of a C14 to put on that mount. Can the AP900 hold such a big scope? It’s about 44lbs without cameras, guide scope, filter wheel, etc.
Thank you,
Phil

The 900 will indeed hold the C14 like a baby in the arms of its mother!

Hi Phil,

I have a C14 on my AP900 and I have to say it is right there at the limit of capacity.  I do have problems when it is windy.  Sometimes I wished I ordered the AP1200 instead.. :)  Make sure you use a 16" dovetail! You might also need the extended counterweight bar to balance the system.

Regards,
Chris

I’ve had a C14 in tandem with a 6”f9 refractor on my 900, and it works fine (but I’m strictly visual, and have it in an observatory). I actually went with a shorter counterweight bar, and heavier weights, because I kept running into the end of the longer one.

That is funny.  .

My AP900 GOTO held my TEC 200ED nicely and slewed it around and tracked the heavens just fine.  Fully configured it weighed in at 60 pounds and was ~70" long with the dew shield so there was plenty of moment arm and, yeah, a little bounce for high power focusing but still easy to accurately focus.  I would slow the slew speeds to 600X though.

My 900 handled my C14 perfectly. I eventually upgraded to the 1100 to get through-the-mount cabling. If it wasn't for that one feature, I would still be using the 900.

AND I REGRET SELLING MY 900!

What a beautiful and perfect piece of engineering.

Thank you all the your replies! I’m new to the Astro-Physics mounts and really appreciate the support. I hope to one day soon being able help others!
By they way, I bought and used Pempro last night to create a PEC curve and download it to my mount. What a well designed and great program. Going to use it on all my mounts!

Hello,

I have been using a C14 on an AP1200 for about 15 years. This is for lunar/planetary imaging only. I observe on a mountain site (no dome). The AP1200 is OK as long as the wind is under 20 to 25 km/h.

I also use it for solar observation with a 300 mm solar telescope, at a mountain site and no dome. High resolution solar imaging is possible up to about 30 km/h wind speed.

So it all depends on your observing conditions.
