AP1200GTO motor stall problem
As you have seen from my other posts Ive been getting to know a 2007 model AP12000GTO with the CP3 v2 chip.
Got it cleaned and re-greased with the AP kit put power to it from a new 5 amp pyramid AC power source.... slews fine in RA nice and quiet. Nothing in DEC. LED turns from red to amber when pushing N or S. Sitting on my kitchen table still so no loads on it. Thinking maybe something it too tight I removed the motor and set it next to the mount and tried again. Nothing, not even a sound. Maybe the gears are too tight. Loosened the shoulder bolts still nothing. Red to amber on the LED. The gears spin free with the worm by finger. Not good. Tried another power source being my Costco jump box, nothing in DEC again. Shoot. Any ideas here? I do have a multi meter handy but would need some help with it. |

Can you get a video of what you mean by "The gears spin free with the worm
by finger"?

Also if you swap the RA and DEC cables, does the problem move from one axis to the other?

Thanks Bill,
The sound you hear there is the new grease on the gears as I turn them. They dont spin free per say, just seems normal to me without binding. Hopefully I didnt fry something. If the attachement does not work try this link! https://photos.app.goo.gl/4VfJjRWyZ2n1mGA99 |

Looks normal to me.
I would suspect a power related problem. Do the cable swap test and see what happens.

Yes the problem follows the cable. When I switched them the RA now does not work.

Time to order a new motor cable. 🙂

This would be the cable, if your CP box is mounted on the RA housing. I am guessing it is.

Well its better than a dead motor! Thanks for helping me troubleshoot this. Pretty awesome to at least have it figured out! Its understandable. Even a AP1200 is not indestructible.

No problem. I would say 15 years of use on the original cable is pretty good.

I do have a few mechanical engineers in my family who owe me some favors! Looks like it could be fixed......or send back to AP for repair? Or just bite the bullet and get new?

Definitely try and fix it if you can. Something may have just popped loose on the cable connector
that is not working.

Plug the RA part of the cable into the Dec motor. Then press E-W buttons. If it works, then you have a break in the Dec portion of the Y cable. Check the inside of the connector to see if any wires came loose.

Definitely check the connections to see if it can be repaired. I always kept a spare just in case.
