Thanks again, can I start with the questions?
1) What is the minimum version of ASCOM required, I ask because for me ASCOM is something that runs in the background that I have a vague idea of what it does. And to be honest at the moment I have no idea what version I am using, yes I think it is relatively recent.
And this leads to the second question....
2) How do I know what version of ASCOM I'm using?

Wonderful,
Thanks everyone. |

I have been using virtual ports to connect to my mount and had never heard of REST API until watching the video below. I will try updating APCC and ASCOM V2 tomorrow and hopefully everything goes as simply as the video makes it out to be.

Hello fellow Astronuts,
Today we release new versions of APCC and ASCOM V2. This post provides details for the updates and how to take advantage of the new software.
TOPICS IN THIS POST Video with new features and installation Important things to know for updating New Features
VIDEO Here's a just-released video that highlights new release features and walks through how to uninstall/install, configure, and use the new versions. It's worth a watch:
IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW FOR UPDATING 1. New versions are APCC Pro 1.9.6.1, APCC Standard 1.9.6.0 and ASCOM V2 5.60.01. you can find them at https://www.astro-physics.com/software-updates/ 2. For updates, you must uninstall the prior version and then install the new version. Your license and settings will be kept intact, as demonstrated in the video. 3. Install the latest ASCOM platform v. 6.6 SP1. 4. For APCC users you must install both the APCC and the ASCOM update - they go hand in hand. 5. Anyone with APCC Standard or Pro license can upgrade to take advantage of the various bug fixes and small enhancements. New Pro features require a license date of 1/1/2022 or later (more details in the video mentioned above).
NEW FEATURES AND ENHANCEMENTS 1. REST API is now default connection between APCC and ASCOM (APCC all versions). 2. Simplified connection group and new connection workflow - see video for demonstration (APCC all versions). 3. Improved connection options in ASCOM V2 driver (ASCOM all versions). 4. Plate Solve/Autocenter (demonstrated in video) - you can now center your goto target from within APCC Pro with just one button-click (requires Pro license). 5. Switch between park positions without having to unpark (APCC all versions). 6. New Constant button to set fixed value in Meridian Limits or Horizons (APCC all versions). 7. Bug fixes and small enhancements (all versions). 8. Updated documentation for both APCC and ASCOM V2 software.

Marcelo you want to be running ascom platform 6.6sp1 you can run the ascom diagnostic app on your computer (it’s installed with the ascom platform) which will tell you the version, but you can also go to ascom-standards.org and just download the 6.6sp1 installer and run it to update it. hth Brian On Wed, Jan 4, 2023 at 7:30 PM Marcelo Figueroa via groups.io <marfig1970=yahoo.com@groups.io> wrote:

I am with you Jack. Never heard of REST API.
I was waiting until there was a major change in the APCC design to update my APCC Pro subscription which expired last August (I am currently running V1.9.4.3). The 1.9.6.1 version has some major design changes with the elimination of the virtual ports and the different connection workflow, so I didn't have to wait very long. Mike |

I'm the opposite. I could never get the virtual com ports to work on my 1600GTO AE so I've only used RestAPI Tcp/Ip. The only thing I found odd was the mount ip address 169.254.5.174 not being a 192.168.. private address. Nothing wrong, I've just never used the 169.254 addresses.

That is also a reserved and non-routable IP space. Totally fine.

Thank you Ray, Brian and AP.
Is it possible to have a list of the bug fixes? Thank you, |
|
Thanks Brian,
However, I'm a little confused which version of the V2 driver I should use with my old CP3. I
suspect it's ok to upgrade, but on the AP website it also says that it should only be used with APCC v1.9.6.x or later....
I'm not using APCC, so what does this mean for me please?

I know and there are a lot more where that came from. I’ve just never had a need for the 169’s.

Just watched the (excellent) video. Seems straightforward. Some networking questions...
1. I have multiple AP mounts on my LAN. Each uses a reserved IP address. I assume I can just manually enter that IP address in the Connect setup window. Is that right? 2. I assume the computer and mount have to be on the same VLAN. Is that correct? Thanks Marty |

If your CP4/5 has recent firmware, it will be running a multicast DNS (mDNS) service. When you press the Find Mount button in APCC, APCC does a mDNS query on the network and lists any response(s) it receives from listening CP4/5s. Because APCC's query is sent to the multicast address of the local subnet, only CP4/5's on the same subnet will respond and thus be listed. But most modern managed switches and routers offer the ability to reflect mDNS queries and responses across subnets, so you can have your APCC-running computer on one VLAN (and thus subnet) with the CP4/5's on a different one and still utilize the Find Mount feature. Routers/switches generally need such a mDNS relay service turned on, though.

But if you want to manually punch in the IP of the CP4/5 you're looking to connect to, that works as well. Same VLAN (IP subnet) or not doesn't matter assuming the hosts involved have the requisite routing in place to reach each other, any network ACLs permit it, etc. On Jan 5, 2023, at 08:26, mjbollinger87@... wrote: |

Sorry in advance if I'm misunderstanding the above, but it would helpful if the bug fixes, small enhancements etc that don't potentially trigger a licence upgrade could be separated from the new features that do.
It's not clear to me what changes affect licensing and what do not. Thanks. Bob |

Hi BOb >>>it would helpful if the bug fixes, small enhancements etc that don't potentially trigger a licence upgrade could be separated from the new features that do. That is how it works. If you watch the video it shows you how to determine what new features are available with license update and which are currently licensed. https://youtu.be/7r2qujy8BkM. This is imo the best approach: if it's not listed in the 'new features with upgrade' then you have access to it. The email also lists the most significant "small" enhancements that are included in the update that are available to everyone On Thu, Jan 5, 2023 at 6:46 AM Bob <astro@...> wrote: Sorry in advance if I'm misunderstanding the above, but it would helpful if the bug fixes, small enhancements etc that don't potentially trigger a licence upgrade could be separated from the new features that do. --

Hi Geof You can use the latest ASCOM V2 driver. The message there is for ASCOM/APCC users: you can't use newer ASCOM V2 version with older APCC. You need to update both. In your case that does not apply Brian On Thu, Jan 5, 2023 at 4:11 AM Geof Lewis <geoflewis@...> wrote:
