GOTOCP3 jack sizes

David

Can anyone tell me what the jack sizes are for the Focus, Reticle, and aux +6V jacks. The manual says they take 3.5 mm mono phone plugs but that is not the case with my unit and the plugs I have about and in my parts collection. I would not be surprised if I am embarrassed by the answer.

David,

I believe it’s also called a “Mini-Phone Plug.”  It’s 3.5mm or 1/8” diameter.  It’s the same connector most earbuds use, except that earbuds use the “stereo” three-conductor version while the CP3 uses the “mono” two-conductor version.

These are two conductor plugs called “mono” or “TS” for “Tip and Sleeve”.  The “stereo” version has three conductors and is called “RTS” for “Ring, Tip and Sleeve.”

Basically it’s a “mono” “Mini Phone Plug.”

You might be confusing it with a 3.5mm coaxial DC connector which has a hollow sleeve and single pin inside – similar to the CP3’s 12v power connector but smaller.  But that’s NOT what the other sockets you talk about are. They’re not coaxial.

Hope that helps,

Woody

This is really confusing as that is what I had assumed Woody. Without checking, I went ahead and ordered some jacks to make up some leads - got them today and they don't fit, diameter of the jacks is larger! I then grabbed all the 3.5mm earphone leads I have and checked, none fit.

David

Good grief, just checked and the last mm of travel seated the tip - been mucking about with electronics for 50years and I still make stupid mistakes.

David,

Odd.  Give me an hour or so and I’ll get my CP3 out.  I’ve only used the 6v jack as that powers my StarGPS.  I’m pretty sure all those jacks are the same size.

I’ll get back to you.

David,

So all is well now and the plugs are fitting and working?

David,

If I understand you, it was harder to overcome the spring clip at the end that locks the plug in than you expected.

I’ve learned that the plug tip shape can have a lot to do with how hard it is to plug these in.  Not all plug tips have exactly the same shape.  Some are harder to plug all the way in than others.

But it sounds like all is well again.  Perhaps another example of how the “bigger hammer” technique sometimes actually works.

The plugs that I have for the older CP controllers measure 0.22" or 5.588mm on the outer diameter.

Yes all is well - I did have to "snap" it in and both contacts are good. I needed to get at the +6V to power two RS232-Bluetooth adapters and just now finished throwing together something. Fiddly as usual jamming two leads into one plug but it worked first time. And the cool thing is I didn't need to drop the voltage closer to 5V by having to a jam a diode in there as well!
