Move to Windows 11

Steve Reilly

Well I’m more than curious about the experience of upgrading your observatory computer over to Windows 11 from Windows 10. I have a OnLogic NUC installed in the observatory which has been doing a great job of my imaging setup and of course I just updated my APCC and ASCOM driver following the excellent video instructing how. But a restart just a few minutes ago shows a free upgrade to Windows 11 from the installed Windows 10. I’d really like to not have tons of issues to deal with doing so which is why this email. Is this risky to do or should I stay with the original OS on this 1 year old system which is working well on its own? I do have a few computers that have Windows 11 but those are personal use and not connected to any of the astronomy equipment. Just curious about your experience.

Hi Steve,

I have nearly the same set up although my onlogic nuc has been working great for about three years now.

Maybe I will take the plunge and move to windows 11 and report back.

If your computer is 3 years old or more, I would recommend waiting it out. I have done the conversion and frankly, there's nothing that's even a smidgen better. The first step, though, no matter that you got the invite is to make sure that your old computer can meet all of the requirements. Two of my 3 imaging computers are more and do not meet the requirements. There's a download from MS that will analyze your box and let you know the outcome. My philosophy is to never install any update that I don't need until I have the energy to upgrade my boxes (usually annually) and then fully test (as best I can) the resulting new configuration on a night when I can't really image (wind, partly cloudy, too much moon, etc).

Totally agree with Ross.  Leave it alone.  I have two win 11 rig machines and two rig 10 machines.  One mini and one mini tower.  Nothing spectacular about win 11.  Some people say RDP is better and more robust, but I don't notice it.  If your machine is older leave it alone.

I appreciate it guys but you might be aware that my job is to install all the new stuff to figure out what works and what doesn’t. I know my computer is Windows 11 compatible I’ve already done all that diagnostics in checks.

I’ll let you know how it goes later

Thanks Brian.

I of course would fully backup my system, maybe even clone an identical drive before taking on the upgrade. I was aware when I bought my OnLogic that it would be Windows 11 compatible. What I’ve done with my Win 11 systems is install a program that gives me the options of using Windows 7, 8, or 10 menus styles. I always use Win 7, my favorite OS after XP. Yeah I have a few years on me…..

Steve et al - I have one rig on W'10 and it is STAYING there. The other is happily on W'11 with no issues. The one on W'10 is for my rig with the Apogee U16M and there were no drivers for W'11 when my computer happily upgraded itself. Camera vanished. Grrr. Anyway, one day maybe Andor will produce drivers for W'11 and this old camera but ... (they say they might have a set but I've been able to stabilize on W'10 for this rig and think the camera will die before W'10 becomes a problem).

That was one aspect I always try to do is gather drivers 1st before any upgrade. Been down that path with printers/scanners and that’s why I buy Epson these days……..

There is a quite a large improvement in system performance in Windows 11 over Windows 10, but I don't want to get into that too deep here, as this isn't a Microsoft forum.

APCC, the V2 driver, and firmware updates via Edge have worked perfectly on Windows 11 for me. For firmware, I used the manual method, as I'm not a fan of installing the Java VM on machines that do not need it otherwise.

Brian, it'll go fine provided you took the precautions suggested by the diagnostics tool. All of my imaging machines run Windows 11 Pro.

Steve, what version of Win10 are you running (winver)? Just curious as two are currently supported below. I've been running Win11 Pro on my NUC for a while with no issues. Works great for me. If you are on a current supported version of Win10, there is no immediate rush to upgrade if you would rather wait.

just to update:

I upgraded the OnLogic fanless computer from Windows 10 to Windows 11 - just to make it interesting I did it completely remotely using only teamviewer

It worked! Everything booted back up after the install and all applications and

Back to the OP's original question, APCC Pro/ASCOM still work correctly, on the latest versions.

I expected as much as I have two other Win 11 computers than run APCC Pro and ASCOM V2 drivers just fine, but good to know the same setup as the op was successfully updated.

Good to know Brian. I may bite the bullet in a few weeks. That system has little else but observatory and imaging programs on it and I’ll need to do a complete backup before trying anything.
