Is It Dark Yet? A Picture of my wide field imaging rig.

Dean Jacobsen

Hi All,

I thought I would share a recent image of my wide field imaging rig set up and waiting for dark.

https://www.astrobin.com/09i8k8/

The Mach2 is sitting atop a Losmandy HD folding tripod with the AP specific adapter.  The dovetail saddle is an AP brand saddle I purchased a while ago.  The counterweights were purchased with my original 900GTO which I pruchased in 2003, so the counterweights are almost 20 years old.  The dovetail is an ADM pre-drilled plate and the rings are Parallax rings.  The FSQ-106 is the EDX IV version purchased in 2018.  The 0.72x 645 reducer is installed but not visible.  It is inside the focuser body.  The camera is the ZWO ASI2400MC Pro full frame color camera.  No filter wheel and no guide scope.

The giant binoculars are for something to do as it is getting dark and the mount is doing its mapping run.  :-)

Nice setup.   However, darkness is inevitable unless you live in the S. Pole about this time of year.  The real question is:  Is it dark, clear and moonless?  The answer more often than not is no.

Looks awesome Dean!

Nice setup Dean

Do you live near a beach ? I see a lot of sand in the background is why I ask.

No beach sorry to say.  It is out in the desert in San Diego County.  What you are seeing is sand & decomposed granite that was left over from the excavation around another member’s ongoing construction project that his contractor spread out and leveled as a pad for me to park my RV and set my rig on.  The pattern you see in the sand is from the tracks of the small Caterpillar they used.

Beautiful setup for sure - nice to see the Mach2 coupled to the Losmandy HD. I'm on the Mach2 list and have that same tripod waiting for it!

The FSQ-106 plus the ASI2400mc must be a joy to use.

CS!

Thanks Jil.  You are going to enjoy the Mach2 for sure.  The Losmandy HD folding tripod works great.  Yes, the FSQ-106 + ASI2400MC has been a lot of fun to use… almost as fun as the Mach2.  Definitely the best imaging rig I have put together in my more than 20 years in this hobby.
