Error in APCC pro reading RA encoder on Mach2 #appc #Mach2GTO
Terri Zittritsch
A few items on APCC Pro on Mach2. This weekend I've gotten a couple of error messages that says "Error Reading RA encoder". The temperature is in the 30s, so not very cold and when I get the error message the globe screen in APCC flashes Red and will not let me either see or clear the error. When I click on the button above the globe to view errors, the error log screen will not come up. I've tried the log menu as well, same thing. In one case the mount continued to work fine and I just put up with this red flashing box for the rest of the session and was able to clear the error only after disconnecting APCC, shutting down and restarting APCC. In the other situation it seems the mount became unresponsive to commands to move from SGP so I had to shut down everything, including performing a power cycle on the mount. I've run into this a couple of times where APCC does not allow me to see the errors or bring up the log file via APCC.
The second item, albeit minor, is that many times I notice the globe does not represent the park position accurately when starting APCC. It shows the red dot at the bottom of the north south vertical axis rather that at the north pole position. Since I have my mount local to me, it's not a big deal, but does seem like some kind of bug. The 3D view always shows the mount accurately whenever I check it. I am running the latest versions of software. Lastly, when I have an error I can't clear, I notice I can't shut down normally either. With all ASCOM devices disconnected, the ASCOM driver does not shut down. My log file from last night which should include the RA encoder read error: https://drive.google.com/file/d/17A20SE8m0W6lEeGx5YPlIAcRuD2a6-fH/view?usp=sharing Terri |

Hi Terri >>> When I click on the button above the globe to view errors, the error log screen will not come up. This happens to me occasionally and I have found the error window is hidden behind other windows, but i can't get at it. I found if I click on APCC in the task bar, i can see all the windows, including the error window. I click the close box on the error window and then return to APCC and click on view errors. That always works for me On Mon, Nov 8, 2021 at 8:20 AM Terri Zittritsch <theresamarie11@...> wrote: A few items on APCC Pro on Mach2. The hidden error window has happened to me numerous times, and I mentioned it in a previous thread. I use the same workaround, but it’s annoying.

Guys, thanks for the response on the error window. I click on the task bar and see a second window, but when I click on that second window it does not come to the front. At least for me, it seems there is no way to make the window active and viewable. Terri |
|
Terri you can't make it come to the front in the way you are doing (believe me, i have tried) you have to hover your mouse over that window preview and click the "X" to dismiss it Then you can go back to APCC and click the view errors and it will come up On Mon, Nov 8, 2021 at 11:25 AM Terri Zittritsch <theresamarie11@...> wrote:

Do you recall if APCC was minimized when this happens? If so, try : 1. Close the Errror Log window from the Windows taskbar 2. Unminimize APCC 3. Reopen the Error Log window via APCC's Tools menu. -Ray -----Original Message----- |

Try switching the mount cables between RA and Dec. See if the error switches to Dec. If so, mark that cable.

Last night, it just worked without issue, so not sure why. Ray, not sure if APCC was minimized when the error occurred. I typically do not watch APCC unless I suspect something is wrong or I need to change a meridian setting. I will give both suggestions on the error window a try next time I run into this. On the RA encoder read error, I had another error last night. Should I be concerned with this? Terri

I will try this.. and this is on the Mach2 for me. For the most part my mount stays in a garage unless imaging. Has never been in the rain, although we get significant dew at times. For me, besides the error clearing issue it's only caused a functional issue for me one time where I had to completely power cycle the mount to fix it. It had stopped responding to commands from SGP. If you meant me, it's a Mach2, just like Terri's. It only happened once. I cleared the error and continued with no problem. I'm not even sure how much time passed before I noticed it. I'll need to mark the RA/Dec cables to be able to differentiate them, in case they play a part. I use them interchangeably now. Jerome |

I made a possible fix for the invisible error log window issue in the latest APCC Pro beta (v1.9.1.5) that I built yesterday. It also has the fix that Howard mentioned for the Dec/RA Encoder warnings. Although it is technically a beta it is pretty solid, so if you have a chance, please give it a try: https://www.apastrosoftware.com/apcc_download/APCC_Pro_BETA_Setup_1.9.1.5.exe -Ray -----Original Message----- |

I also get occasional Error Reading RA encoder or Error Reading Dec encoder. It seemed to start after I had an issue fixed with the control box several months ago. I figured out how to get to the error window by closing it from the task bar and then reopening. Still happens on the order of once every two imaging sessions.
