VPort2 / Fault / Sync Target: Valid Alt/Az, RA/Dec, HA/Dec has not been received!"

Erkaslan Aygen

Good morning,

Since a fews days I am experiencing an issue and I hope that someone could help me in solving it. I keep having the following error message every time I sending a command to my acquisition software (Voyager) to center a target : "VPort 2 / Fault / Sync target: Valid Alt/Az, HA/Dec has not been received"

My equipment, in a nutshell :

  • AP 1100 GTO CP4
  • Firmware VCP4-P02-10
  • Connection type : TCP + backup port. NOTE: my ethernet cable transits via a "Neatgear Hub"
  • ASCOM Plateform 6.5 SP1(6.5.1. 3234)
As can be seen on the below image, I don't have any problem to connect to APCC nor to the AP driver. However, as mentioned, I keep having the above mentioned error message for a couple of days and I don't know why ! I did not change anything nor installed any W10 updates.

Also, I have already reinstalled the APCC and the AP driver but the problem persists :(

I would appreciate your support.

Best regards,
Aygen

Hi Aygen,

That error message means that one or both sync coordinates (RA/Dec) have not been received, so the sync cannot be completed.

Can you use APCC's Log Zipper utility to create a Zip file with your APCC and AP V2 ASCOM driver logs and post a link to the zip file? (And, please do not attach the zip file to your post as it will be too large).

Dear Ray,

Thank you very much for your quick reply. Below is link to access the files.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/lo9lxj6ggq9p6zo/AscomZip-Aygen-2021-10-16-165729.zip?dl=0

In the meantime, I did follow one of your recommendation to delete the ap.ini files and re-do the config "now" of the AP Driver.

Hi Aygen,

Unfortunately, you used the AP V2 Log Zipper and not the APCC log zipper, so there are no APCC logs.

So, please use the APCC log zipper to zip the APCC logs. You can run the APCC log zipper from APCC's Tools menu, as shown in this screenshot:

Thanks!

Hi Aygen ,

I just got a chance to review your logs. The problem is the AP V2 ASCOM driver is trying to use a comma as a decimal point, which is producing invalid coordinates in some cases. I am not sure why this is just starting to happen, but you may need to adjust your Windows regional settings to use "." as a decimal point.

Good evening Ray,

Thank you so much for your kind support, much appreciated. I did change the setting and it seems to be working now.

However, another message occurred :(
  • VPort 3 : Recal failed because it is too far (13.651 > 5 000 degrees) from current RA/Dec
I am honestly lost ! Don't know what's happening all of a sudden.

Hi Aygen,

I'm going to assume that all of your astronomy applications are now using "." instead of a comma as a decimal point. If that is not the case, then you may need to change settings in those applications.

However, if all apps are using "." as a decimal point, then it could be a bad RECAL. APCC has protection against bad plate solves or syncing on the wrong star in a planetarium program. But, if you are sure that telescope pointing is off by 13.651 degrees, you can disable the setting "Prevent errant RECALs" in APCC's advanced settings (see screenshot below). Make sure to enable it again after you have completed the RECAL.

I apply your suggestions and let you know asap.

Yes, probably. Try parking to Park 3 which should place the counterweight shaft pointing to the ground. If it is not, then manually adjust the mount so that it is in the Park 3 position.

Also, I noticed a lot of failed network responses in your logs. Maybe the mount was powered off, but if not, it could be connection to the mount is not very solid.

Thank you, Ray, for your great support.

I am currently reviewing my network in detail to see whether there is something to improve from my side.

As of now, my mount is connected via TCP LAN + a backup port (USB). Regarding this latter, isn't it a "safe" way especially (let's assume) in case the network is not really "robust" ?

Aygen

Aygen,

If you are using a desktop computer, I suggest you get a good serial-port add-in card and use that instead of USB as the backup port (and maybe consider it as the primary connection).

Although the USB protocol is usually fine, many computers do not implement the hardware and/or drivers in the best way. Reliability can depend on other USB devices that are connected. Also, USB cables have very restrictive cable length requirements compared to serial port cables.

Thank you, Ray, for your great support.

I am currently reviewing my network in detail to see whether there is something to improve from my side.

As of now, my mount is connected via TCP LAN + a backup port (USB). Regarding this latter, isn't it a "safe"
way especially (let's assume) in case the network is not really "robust" ?

Regards,
Aygen

Yes, probably. Try parking to Park 3 which should place the counterweight shaft pointing to the ground.
If it is not, then manually adjust the mount so that it is in the Park 3 position.

Also, I noticed a lot of failed network responses in your logs. Maybe the mount was powered off, but if
not, it could be connection to the mount is not very solid.

Dear Ray,

Thank you, I will do it right away.

I wish you an excellent start into the new week.

And it's getting harder and harder to actually get good ones.

That's why I was so delighted getting this mount with the CP4 and being able to shift to ethernet.  I can make ethernet cables, I can test them, and (except exceptionally rarely) they do not just go flakey at 2am just because.

If a USB cable acts up it goes in the garbage, the Darwin theory of how to find good cables. So I have a stable of ones that work fairly well, but it is still delightful to run the CP4 off ethernet.

(And yes I realize a lot of peoples' home networks can then introduce their own problems, but those are self inflicted.)

Thank you AP, Ray, whomever for adding ethernet.

Dear Ray, Dear All,

I did apply thoroughly Ray's recommendation to adjust Windows regional setting to use "." as a decimal point rather than the "," that we have in Switzerland / Europe.

Here are my findings following the above adjustment :

  • Software used : APT TOOL.
  • Result : APCC no longer trigger the "Sync Target: Valid Alt/Az, RA/Dec, HA/Dec has not been received". As a result, it's working !

However, by adjusting the decimal point by ".", I can no longer access my automation software, i.e. "Voyager" ! Needless to say that I am stuck and embarrassed ! What can I do ?

  1. Should I install a former version of AP driver ? If so, I understand that you need the 5.30... version in order to use it with APCC
  2. Any other thoughts / suggestions ?
  3. What is this "decimal point" issue started to really bother me since a few days whereas everything was up and running so far ?

I am gently getting desperate :(

Thank you for your help.

My best regards,
Aygen

Hi Aygen,

You could go back to the old driver, but it's not clear to me why this version of the driver is not working, especially since you said it was working a few days back. Can you tell me what has changed?

Good evening Ray,

Honestly, I don't know why all of this is happening all of a sudden. I didn't change anything software / drivers wise.

So, tomorrow I will install a former version (5.21.09 ?) and see what comes next. I was also wondering whether I should uninstall APCC and give it a go with the AP driver only.

Anyway, very sorry to bother you all with this ongoing issue.

Best,
Aygen

Is it possible that Voyager changed, I know it gets pretty rapid updates.  Did you update it?  Maybe it introduced some internationalization into its APCC connection data (or ascom v2 connection, not sure how it ties in) that aren't liked on the receiving end?

Not to the best of my knowledge. I remember having upgraded about 3 weeks ago...

I can try to install a former version just for sanity check... who knows ! The thing is I am also getting the same error message with APT if the decimal point is not adjusted.
