#APCC Pro 1.9 w/ASTAP platesolve test always fails #APCC

Sébastien Doré

Hi,

Just tried the new platesolving feature with APPM/ASTAP (using the "Image Link Test" button in APPM) and it always results in failed attemps (near or blind)... Tried several Fits file and it always ends up the same (failed after a few seconds wait). If I open up the same files directly in ASTAP, they platesolve in less than a second... I double checked that coordinates, camera angle and image scale were correctly retrieved from the Fits header and tried increasing the radius search field to 360 deg... no luck. I also set all the settings to 0 (to use the default from ASTAP) and again, it failed.

Not sure what else I could try. I should add ASTAP platesolve works correctly in other third party app (NINA, APT).

APPM log file shows the platesolve actually succeeded but ends with an exception saying "user clicked cancel or close" which I didn't in all cases. See log extract below. I can provide a link to some subs I tried if it helps and/or the full log file.

Unfortunately, I can't test the real run under the stars as the sky's clouded, obviously...

Sébastien

So that’s odd in a slightly different way – I set up NINA as the camera, and ASTAP as the plate solver.  I was using a simulator for the camera in NINA that downloads image survey files.

The overall process worked fine, in that any image I could solve with ASTAP also solved during the RUN option.

The plate solve button on the RUN tab worked.

The Image Link Test button would not work at all for me, Keeps saying “the file could not be opened” after it opened the file and provided the header info (and I hit plate solve).

I was debating whether to mention to see if someone else had issues with it.  Which maybe you did?

Does the RUN work, or the Plate Solve button on the RUN tab work?   I think this is something with that specific button.

But… the underlying link worked nicely, APPM invoked NINA’s camera, returned a file, plate solved, etc.  I did have some issues that the survey images would sometimes not solve, but it was the image – I’d try by hand, tried TSX, nothing would solve it (except astronometry.net, which I think can solve a cup of coffee given time).   But that is about the simulator, nothing to do with the new features.

The new features are very cool, being able to avoid using the 32 bit camera routine’s limitations in particular!  And no more need for TSX!

Can you please share the FIT file?

I am about to do a full APMM model run here in a moment. Will reply back with the results.

Switching to ASTAP was literally changing the drop down for me.  I changed nothing else.

Nice job Ray! :)

Can you please share the FIT file?

I am about to do a full APMM model run here in a moment. Will reply back with the results.

Subject: [ap-gto] #APCC Pro 1.9 w/ASTAP platesolve test always fails

Sébastien

In fact the APCC software overall feels snappier and more responsive than before. APPM is slinging the Mach 2 around (with the same monster load on it) like nothing.  ASTAP finishes a solve and APPM immediately consumes that data and moves to the next point. Before, there was a lag when Image Link would finish it solve and when APPM would realize that, now that seems to be gone (at least with ASTAP).

The model is cooking along at a very fast clip. Will report back on its total time (was 50 mins before, give or take 1) but this seems way better, and I have been building models and giving feedback now for about 4 years.

TL:DR;  Sehr gut.

Switching to ASTAP was literally changing the drop down for me.  I changed nothing else.

Nice job Ray! :)

I am about to do a full APMM model run here in a moment. Will reply back with the results.

Sébastien

The model runtime was only a few minutes faster on a MiniPC, but I should be clear that I still use SkyX for the camera control.

Does the RUN work, or the Plate Solve button on the RUN tab work?   I think this is something with that specific button.
Can't say for the RUN button, clouds are in and everything sits disassembled in my living room right now. I'll test further as soon as I get a chance. I myself was waiting that specific feature to be released to start doing modeling.

That's good news if the real thing works well ! (Hopefuly, Bill will tell us soon enough...😉)

Can you please share the FIT file?

Yes, will do tomorrow.

I did some more investigation with morning eyes, and I think there is some sequence of events that gets the Image Link Test to not work.

I specifically did this:

  • Set NINA to use a simulator (it’s daylight) and started a model run
  • After 5 points (#2 failed to solve, not surprising for survey images I think), I aborted the run
  • APPM was set to save images
  • I went to the Plate Solve settings, hit Image Link Test
  • Selected the last image (which had just solved)
  • Header came up, I hit plate solve:

“The file could not be opened or error processing file: Object reference not set to an instance of an object”.

  • At this point no image could be solved from that button.  I tried images that earlier worked fine with that button in the same fashion.

The APPM log, if I am interpreting it correctly, looks like the plate solve ran and succeeded.  I see no sign of this error in the log, only the screen.  Ray, if it’s useful to you and you think worth pursuing, today’s logs are:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1n9EfsZT6AuIlUHCWBx0lmJcx0ZnQ1H7j/view?usp=sharing

The longer log is the one that failed (though there is no sign there of failure I see, only on the screen).  The next in time was me starting APPM again, not even connecting, and using image link test and having it work.  The third is just empty, not sure how that snuck in.

This does NOT seem to affect running the model – I’ve run through several partial ones and it runs fine, solves fine (+/- quality of the survey images that are simulating).  It runs fine even after this error appears.  I do not know if this error is triggered specific to NINA, something about the simulated images, or just from the (partial aborted?) model run, but it is repeatable as above.

But I think there’s some state of the internal objects that is getting corrupted that breaks the image link test button.  It does NOT break the plate solve button on the RUN screen.  It’s just this image link test button.

It’s a small nit I mention in case helpful, it certainly doesn’t get in the way of using this.  Everything I’ve tried worked fine, except some no-solve images which I can’t solve manually either, so not relevant.

Now if I could just get a clear sky to try it for real.

Thank you for a giant step forward for both NINA users, and those with ‘too much resolution’ cameras!

You found a subtle bug. :-) Try renaming the filename's extension from ".fits" to ".fit".

APPM expects the filename to have a three character extension, "fit", so it incorrectly constructed the name of the output file that
ASTAP creates with the plate solve results. Thus APPM failed because a results file with that name does not exist.

I will fix that in the next build.

You found a subtle bug. :-) Try renaming the filename's extension from ".fits" to ".fit".
Yep, that did it.

BTW, is there a place (other than through this forum) to report issues re APPC/APPM (or even enhancement requests) that we could come across or is this the correct place to ask ?

I'm asking because e.g. I also have some issues with the 3D viewer in APCC (mount position when parked is "drifting") but maybe it is only specific to my system (or my bad understanding of what is "calibration with the night sky"). Obviously, this isn't a show stopper either, but it would indeed be nice to have that feature working as expected for me.

This is the best place to post issues you encounter with APCC, APPM, Horizons, and the AP V2 ASCOM driver.

Hello Ray,

Relative to this same "Image Test Link" function, I also encountered a file where the fits data was improperly parsed. RA and DEC were significantly off - see below. The camera angle wasn't correct either, only image scale was. Solve failed because of this. Not sure if it has to do with J2000 (coord in fits) to JNow (which AP software seem to use by default) calculation, but the difference does not account for that much error. I can provide image file as well as full Fits header and logs if required.

This is the best place to post issues you encounter with APCC, APPM, Horizons, and the AP V2 ASCOM driver.
Excellent, thank you. That wasn't entirely clear to me. That is now! 🙂

I'm going to need more details and perhaps log files to understand what you are observing.
No problem, I'll open another thread specific to this but maybe another day...

For now, I might have found another issue relative to an "offline platesolving test tool" in APPM w/ASTAP, that is the "Test Solve Images in a folder..." under "Tools" menu.

First thing (not really related to solving per se) is I had to launch APPM in Administrator mode to make the tool work the first time.  I got the error below when I first hit "Start Plate Solves" button. Error translates to: "Module siUtils3.dll was loaded but a call to DLLRegisterServer failed with error code..."

After I clicked OK, this poped-up:

Then, I closed APPM and after re-opening in admin mode, I got this:
(success of what had failed before)

After that, ASTAP invokation started correctly everytime I clicked the button (didn't need to open as admin). Got exact same thing on 2 different computers. Not sure if this is documented somewhere - haven't seen it in the help file - but I just tought I'd report it since its a bit unintuitive to the newcomer.

That was the extent of my success with this though. Indeed, I wasn't able to have a single file solved with success even with some 4-to-3-characters-converted-extension-fits (see logs extract below)... Before you ask, both files below were successfully solved with the "Image Link Test" button (one file is the same as earlier). I noticed the parameters passed along to ASTAP are weird looking: -ra 0, -spd 90, etc.? and they do not seem configurable with this tool, unless I missed a configuration pane somewhere. End result is ASTAP can't find a solution for one image and doesn't return any output for the other (using the same command line reported in APPM log file below). Couldn't find anything useful to help troubleshoot this in the manual either, so again, thought it was worth reporting.

And last, while it may be a bit off-topic (but since I started it...) while I was in the area, I peeked and poked the "Create NASA Starview Images Reference" under "Tools" menu, and it didn't seem to do anything (doesn't record anything in APPM's log either). Are these images saved somewhere ? What's their purpose relative to modeling ? Maybe I just need a little education here...

Thanks,
Sébastien

Hi Sebastion,

What’s the full name of the file? APPM might have extracted the RA/Dec coordinates from the filename. It does this for working with the files it creates.

Regarding the DLL problem, that is probably the fault of your anti-virus program, which is likely being overly protective. J

As for the NASA SkyView, have you tried reading the help? You can click the little “?” button in the upper right corner of most tabs and/or group boxes to pull up context-sensitive help. Here’s the link to the same information online:

Subject: Re: [ap-gto] #APCC Pro 1.9 w/ASTAP platesolve test always fails

Thanks,

Sébastien

Hi Ray,

What’s the full name of the file? APPM might have extracted the RA/Dec coordinates from the filename. It does this for working with the files it creates.
Full filename is as highlighted below. Not sure how APPM does convert to these coordinates but most importantly, I wonder why it simply doesn't use the fits header info when it's available if that indeed what's happening ?

Regarding the DLL problem, that is probably the fault of your anti-virus program, which is likely being overly protective. J
Right, Microsoft Defender watching my back ! (Even if I didn't ask! 😉) I'm must be too used to installer asking access persmission and the like at runtime. I never turn off my A/V anymore...

Even so, you missed the most important point I was trying to make in the subsequent paragraph of my previous message. Which is: why I cannot solve a single image using the tool: "Test Solve Images in a folder" ? I'll repost the details here for conveniance (please see log extracts in my previous post) :

As for the NASA SkyView, have you tried reading the help?
Yes, of course! (I even went further than this and queried Google about it who led me to this site: https://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/ftools/fv/doc/SkyView.html - amongst others - which wasn't very helpful in answering my specific question about APPM, which, for clarity, is NOT about the use of the "fake camera" in the run tab, but rather about that menu :

You can click the little “?” button in the upper right corner of most tabs and/or group boxes to pull up context-sensitive help.
I am aware of that too. Thing is, as said before, no window opens right after I click on the menu above... And there is nothing about that menu in the built-in help file / the link you provided... 🧐

APPM does look at the FITS header. The only thing I can think of is that there is another FITS header keyword that it is using. APPM doesn’t just pick numbers out of a hat! J

I have solved entire folders of FITS images with APPM. For example, see the attached video I just created using ASTAP to solve images in a folder. That said, APPM’s plate solving is designed to work with FITS files that it creates or had created. It is not guaranteed to be compatible with all FITS files, nor does it need to be.

In the mean time, if you provide a link to your FITS file, I’ll take a look at it.

Okay I see what you meant! That menu item was used for creating test images and should have been removed.  In fact the Test Solve Images in a folder option needs to be removed as well.

BTW, you can use the NASA Sky View camera to test APPM and ASTAP during the daytime or in cloudy weather.  The “Image Link Test” button is just to help confirm you have the appropriate plate solver and stellar databases installed.
