Thanks for pointing this out. I have many of these long clamps in my shop and I never thought about using them to slide the OTAs on the saddles or move the parallel saddle bars using one of them. That will be a big help

I meant to post this earlier. With side by side configurations achieving vertical balance in declination is always a challenge, particularly when you change imaging equipment. Getting a heavy equipment load on the side by side dovetail plate to slide a precise distance in the saddle plate can be frustrating. My solution is to use a clamp with hand hand grip. The soft shoes on the grip prevent any damage and allow you to engage the dovetail on one side and the saddle on the other.

Rolando,
Thanks. That is what I thought. George already responded to me in that regard.
But, is there a waiting list for the Quick Release Gearbox Modifications to existing AP1600 mounts? You stated that you were machining spare gearboxes, and I am interested it getting an upgrade when they become available.
Yours truly,
Jack

Is the Primary Saddle Plate removed from the mount when doing these steps? No. The saddle always stays on the mount.

I read through the Balancing Side-by-Side procedures you provided a link to and understood everything until I got to Steps 6 through 9. Photos would sure help me visualize what is going on. Is the Primary Saddle Plate removed from the mount when doing these steps? I have the DOVELM162 mounted onto the AP1600 and I think there was only one position I could place it in to allow me to use all the bolt holes tapped in the top of the mount. George,
That is what I thought. But reading the PDF you provided a link to got me confused when I got to step 6 and the positioning of the DOVELM163 on the Dec Axis.

Jack,
No. First you balancing each scope front to back when they are set up exactly as they will be used (and focused), Mark the balance point with blue painter’s tape. Then put them into their saddles at those balance points. Finally set the whole grouping on a dowel rod to find the balance point side to side and mark it with the tape. It can then be set up on the mount and be very close.

George

George,
So you assemble everything on the side to side plate – both scopes and accessories – and then place the dowel rod under the assembly and check the balance point for position the side to side plate in the DOVELM162 bolted to the top of the Dec axis. Mark the side to side plate to indicate the balance point.
You can then rotate the dowel rod 90 degrees under the center of the side to side plate to make sure the entire assembly is balanced in the north-south direction. If so, leaving all the makes in place, disassemble the scopes from the side by side plate and reassemble onto the DOVELM162.
If this is correct, I will get help in removing all the scopes, take off the counterweights and counterweight shaft and then do a gear cleaning and lubrication before re-assembling everything.
Yours truly,
Jack

I forgot that you have a side-by-side setup. Those are a bear to balance. As I recall, it took me nearly an hour to get my side-by-side solar setup properly balanced in all directions and axis the first time. And your scopes are so much larger and heavier.
But at least the meter is helping.
All that said, if I could justify the cost, I’d sure like to get the AP gear-release retrofit kit their “new” mounts have.

Marj... I think most of us realize it wont be a cookie cutter mod, but well worth the effort and cost. Opposed to the cost of a new mount and of course the biggest advantage... a very accurate balance which would alleviate an aweful lot of headaches!...Ive been asking for several years about this possible mod.... sign me up as well.... pleeeeaaassseee!...lol

Jack and all,
The swap out is not an easy one, which is one of the reasons that we have not offered it yet. Yes, many of the components can be reused (motor assembly, worm gear, spur gears), which will reduce the cost. However, it is likely that the mounts will need to return here in order to swap out the components and to ensure accurate assembly.
Clear Skies,

Roland, will this be a simple swap out for current AP1600 owners. I assume that the existing worm gear would be retained and moved to the new housing for the quick release system. Any estimate on price and is there a waiting list for
this retrofit?

Jack,
I forgot that you have a side-by-side setup.
