CP4 Firmware Upgrade Failure

Jack Huerkamp

I found my Astro Physics username and password.  I downloaded the latest CP4 firmware package and unzipped the contents into a folder on my desktop  I printed out the installation instructions and I got as far as "Determine Your IP Address"

I tried three different CAT6 cables connected to the Ethernet port on the CR4 and to my computer.  Since my serial number is CP4-0109, I calculated that the IP address would be: 168.254.0.109

I disconnected the keypad from the CR4 and I also disconnected the Serial connection to the top DB9 connection (I connect to the mount via a Serial to USB on to the computer.)  I left the power cable, the CAT6 cable and the Wye Motor cable connected to the CP4.

Since I have APCC Standard (latest version), I tried starting it to get/verify the IP address.  When I selected TCP LAN/WiFi or UDP LAN/WiFI, I got an invalid V Chip error.

I closed APCC and tried using Edge, Mozilla and MX5 browsers to access 168.254.0.109.  In all cases the browser timed out.

So now I cannot get a browser to recognize the IP address of the CP4.

Now what?

Can I remove the VP4 from the mount, bring it into the house, power it up and try connecting it to my computer with a short CAT6 cable to update the firmware?

Yours truly,

Jack Huerkamp

Hi Jack,

168.254.0.109
Maybe that's just a typo but I think the IP address should start with 169, not 168.

Ray,

Yes a typo. I did try 169.254.0.109.

So I am still at a loss as to why I could not upgrade the CP4 firmware. I am still at the original version that shipped with the unit.

Ray,

I have the router in the house. I direct the router output to a switch and from the switch I have two direct bury CAT 6 cables installed in 1 1/2" PCV conduit running 225' to my observatory (one in use and one as a spare). In the observatory, I have one CAT6 cables connected to a switch and from the switch I connect to the NIC card in the computer. Speed tests in the observatory are consistently 230Mbps down and 10 Mbps up).

Initially I tried connecting the CP4 Ethernet port to an open port on the switch using a CAT6 cable. A browser could not find the IP address.

I then connected the CAT6 cable right to the NIC Card on the Dell tower - a direct connection from the CP4 to the computer - and again the browsers would not find the CP4 IP's address.

Jack,

This is kind of basic networking knowledge which I assume you have but for the sake of others in the same situation:

1) Do you have DHCP enabled on your router? This will provide an IP address to the CP4.

2) Do you know your home local Subnet address and Subnet Mask? You can usually find that by typing "ipconfig" from a windows shell. Here is an example screenshot:

If the CP4 has DHCP enabled it will get an IP address from the router. This is much better than a single cable connection between PC and the CP4, because other computers on your network will also have access to the CP4 if needed.

You can use APCC to find the CP4 in APCC’s “Connection” group box by clicking the find CP4/CP5 button. If the CP4 is not found then it might not be connected on your LAN or it is not configured correctly (take a look at the A-P docs for the CP4 and if needed give a call to George at A-P).

Ray,

I ran a CAT6 cable from the Ethernet port on the CP4 to the switch in the closet in the observatory.  I then ran E-net_WiFi_Poll_2016_0711.exe.

CP4 ISP.jpg shows that GTOCP4_109 was at 198.168.1.17.

I then called up Edge, entered the above IP address and the Astro Physics CP upgrade software started.  I installed Part 1, Part 2 and WiFi, shut down the CP4, reconnected the keypad and Serial cable, and started APCC.

I went to Venus using the keypad, centered it in the FOV and recalibrated the mount.

Now to try running PEMPro V3 tonight.

Thanks for your assistance.

Yours truly,

Jack

Connect your Ethernet cable to the mount, then turn power on to the mount (or cycle power is mount is already on). It should connect. You can also use the Find Mount program to connect your mount to your laptop.

Subject: [ap-gto] CP4 Firmware Upgrade Failure
