Mount Not Going To Park Position 3?

Tony Benjamin <tonybenjamin@...>

I think, the other day, I accidentally shutdown power to the mount while it was tracking and never got to "Park" it, as I normally do at Park position # (more or less North). I started it up tonight and hit Park to position 3 - but its about 10 degrees short of where it should be? Whats the best way to get it back to the correct Park position 3?

Peter Nagy

I would say unlock the clutches of both axes, manually position the mount to Park 3, power cycle the mount if it's still powered up, then resume from Park 3 and go from there.

Hi Peter,

Thanks. I'll give that a go - I was hoping that there would be something more automated for this - but I guess having AE's would solve this issue?

Or  -- point the mount at an object, center it, and RECAL. Problem solved.

Okay, Hi Bill,

Next dumb question - do I just put coordinates into the GoTo/Recal page of APCC - or is that Recal button elsewhere?

Bill Long

Well since you have APCC you can just do this:

Tools > APPM Plate Solve and Sync

Prior to that though, be sure you are not pointed at the pole. Just put in a random object you know exists into Voyager, and send the mount there. Then use APPM Plate Solve and Sync to fix the mount for you.

Alternatively, you can launch APPM, have it RECAL at Zenith, then terminate the model build.

Thank You Sir,

Of course I picked the one point in the entire sky to Sync on - Regulus - that is below the peak of the one house that can hide some of my sky - so the plate solve failed. But figured that problem out quick enough (used Pollux instead) and it is synced once again - THANKS!!

Btw - still waiting for the AE's to arrive - getting close a month now - should be any day :)

Loosen the clutches and move it there manually. Then tighten the clutches and check all the other park positions.

No need to power cycle. Once there you are there.

Normally a mount will never do what you are describing, even if you have a power loss during a slew. But this situation can occur if during a session you did a recal on a wrong position. It can occur if you did a time change during your session, or changed the daylight savings time. For each hour of time change or daylight savings the parks will move 15 degrees.

Aha! Time did recently change between the times we have been able to image here in the PNW (which is where Tony is at as well) I bet that is why.

That must be what happened...because the inadvertent shut down was prior to the 1hr time change!!

Thanks for clearing that up :)

Roland Christen

1 hour = 15 degrees in RA. By the way, having AE on the mount won't solve that at this time. Even if the parks were set to a fixed position (right now they are calculated from your zenith), the stars will be in the wrong position because pointing in RA is always dependent on the time to progress without interruption. As soon as you tell the mount that the time has changed by 1 hour but neglect to tell it that your daylight savings has moved back one hour, then your pointing in RA will be off by exactly 15 degrees. This is fundamental.

I avoid changing the time, just let it flow without interruption twice a year.

Tony,

APCC has a Home tab where you can establish a Home position.   All you have to do is click the Home button and you are fixed.
