Problem with regional settings
Claude Roth
Hello Since Ascom driver version 5.09.09 I have issues because of the regional settings - decimal settings. I have a french Windows 10 version, with the default decimal setting set to comma, the position and time information in the driver window are not correct or sometimes empty, I have also a lot of communications errors. The telescope crosshair in the planetarium software is also not functional. Bets regards Claude See image capture https://photonsdenuit.fr/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/snip_20170903173424.png

I think this may be happening because of recent changes to allow extra precision to some of the commands. The AP Driver uses the ASCOM libraries to create RA/Dec strings for some of the commands sent to the mount, so as a workaround for now you could define "." as decimal in Windows regional settings. So, I've added a bug report for this issue and I expect a fix will be available in AP V2 v5.10.01, when it becomes available. Hi Ray,
Thank you for your answer. That is what I will do while waiting the update, hoping I will not have issues with other software (french for ex.) Anyway, next days, the sky will be cloudy and the moon waxing gibbous or full Best regards, Claude

I wanted to check back with you on this. If you tried, did setting the regional settings work ok? I'm asking because I failed to reproduce the problem yesterday after changing the decimal point to "," in regional settings. Maybe you could zip and post a log file through a public DropBox link? Hi Ray
Yes, when I set the regional parameter, the Decimal symbol to a point it works fine. The errors occurs when this parameter is set to a comma. Below the link to download two log files, AP_ASCOM_2017-09-04_17-54-13 with the comma settings. AP_ASCOM_2017-09-04_17-58-45 with point settings. Best regards, Claude

OK, thank you for testing that, and for the log file. If you wouldn't mind trying a new version of the driver, I have a link below. Hopefully it will allow you to set your regional settings back to normal. Please make sure that you have the latest ASCOM platform (v6.3, at the moment) installed. http://www.gralak.com/apdriver/AstroPhysics_V2_Setup_5.10.01.exe If it doesn't solve the problem, please provide another log file like you did this time. Hi Ray,
Yes, I have zipped the log file with the 5.10.01 driver and regional settings with comma. I have included into the zip folder a screen capture. you can download the zip here Best regards, Claude

I just ran some more tests with 5.10.01 on a system that definitely has the decimal point and comma swapped, like what I think you are using in France. I'm not seeing any errors so far. If you hadn't rebooted your computer after making the regional settings change, please try that. Doing so will ensure that all of the applications in your computer are in sync with the new settings. One more try before I have to move on to something else today. I am not sure why I can't reproduce the behavior you are seeing but there was one more function that might be causing this. Please try this version: http://www.gralak.com/apdriver/AstroPhysics_V2_Setup_5.10.01a.exe Best regards, -Ray Gralak Author of APCC (Astro-Physics Command Center): http://www.astro-physics.com/index.htm?products/accessories/software/apcc/apcc Author of PEMPro: http://www.ccdware.com Author of Astro-Physics V2 ASCOM Driver: http://www.gralak.com/apdriver Author of PulseGuide: http://www.pulseguide.com Author of Sigma: http://www.gralak.com/sigma

Hi Ray
Yes, it works fine now. The driver window shows the right information, I tried with regional settings to comma, the default setting, and with a point, the two settings work fine. The only behavior is the stand alone "Setup Telescope" tool does not execute properly, I get a Windows .NET Framework error dialog box who tell to be unable to create an ActiveX component, but the driver remains configurable via the Ascom properties dialog box. I have prepared a Zip file with the AP driver Log using the latest driver 5.10.01a , a screen capture of the dialog box and a text file (AP-Driver_setup_error.txt) with the error message from the dialog box (sorry, in french) I hop that will help you in your investigation. Best regards, Claude

The problem seems to be coming from APSetup, which is a trivial .Net application that launches the driver setup window. It uses .Net Framework 3.5, which must be installed in addition to .Net 4.x. That's the only thing I can think of for now. So, please check that .Net Framework 3.5 is installed. I will also update APSetup to use .Net 4.x. -Ray Gralak Author of APCC (Astro-Physics Command Center): http://www.astro-physics.com/index.htm?products/accessories/software/apcc/apcc Author of PEMPro: http://www.ccdware.com Author of Astro-Physics V2 ASCOM Driver: http://www.gralak.com/apdriver Author of PulseGuide: http://www.pulseguide.com Author of Sigma: http://www.gralak.com/sigma

Hi Ray
Framework 3.5 is installed, the error appears with version 5.10.01 and 5.10.01a. Best regards, Claude

Hi Claude,
Framework 3.5 is installed, the error appears with version 5.10.01 and 5.10.01a.The APSetup program is trivial and hasn't changed for 5-6 years, so I think the problem is likely with the installation. The driver itself doesn't use .Net. Please go to add/remove programs and remove the driver from the computer. You won't lose any settings. Next, run the 5.10.01a installer by right-clicking by right-clicking and running "as administrator". You might also want to run Windows update and make sure any required or optional patches to .Net 3.5 are applied. Hi Ray
Yes, the Setup Telescope utility work again. I always had uninstalled and reinstalled the software but not "as administrator" . I took the opportunity to clean the Registry. Merci. Best Regards Claude

Hi Ray
The thing I think about is the elevation of the site setup and the decimals of latitude and longitude how are not saved. They stay always to zero. But it is not very important, or should it ? Best regards, Claude

Hi Claude,

Unless you have a cp4 with the right version the extended precision cannot be used so leave the decimal at 0 for lat and long. The small difference is insignificant in operation but is used in the driver to match the current site coordinates with the mount's. -Ray Gralak Author of APCC (Astro-Physics Command Center): http://www.astro-physics.com/index.htm?products/accessories/software/apcc/apcc Author of PEMPro: http://www.ccdware.com Author of Astro-Physics V2 ASCOM Driver: http://www.gralak.com/apdriver Author of PulseGuide: http://www.pulseguide.com Author of Sigma: http://www.gralak.com/sigma
