Seems lately if I connect TheSkyX to my mount using a virtual serial port in APCC I end up with a Blue Screen Of Death with a message that vserial7.sys was the cause and a long string of numbers and letters. Using Everything to search my system and APCC shows up as the only program using this file. It’s happened a number of times and I can’t swear it hasn’t when TheSkyX wasn’t connected. The last two times TheSkyX was definitely connected. This doesn’t seem to be an immediate issue after connecting but rather sometime afterward. I can’t say the telescope was doing anything at the time of failure as it is likely running some imaging tasks through ACP. I can go out and restart the computer and reconnect everything without issue. Not sure where to go from here. Suggestions welcomed. Steve

Hi Steve, I'll contact Eltima but for the record I don't use registry cleaners of any brand. I do use CCleaner for removal of temp file s and so on but not their registry tools. OK, but you might have been heading that way if you had used some of those tools on that Solvuso site. It's a third party DLL that gets installed by APCC (like a C++ DLL from Microsoft, or the .NetFramework).
I don't have the source code for it nor am I setup for system level debugging on my computer so I can't help you with debugging a low system-level Windows BSOD. Probably the only support you can get for a BSOD is from Eltima, whose engineers will likely want you to give them the windows dump file. The BSOD could be caused by many things, including having used 3rd-party registry and system cleaners in the past, or some other DLL that is interfering. I believe that only Eltima engineers would be able to identify the driver's crash point with what line of code in their driver caused it.

Ray,
I’m still waiting all these past decades of
Windows, for ... “even Microsoft” ... to finally come out with their own
“Registry Cleaner”, of the same excellence ;-)
as Microsoft Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Security Essentials
(MSE) antivirus.
What is it that is oft quoted about “people who live in glass houses”
?
Seems to me that if Microsoft can’t keep their Windows
Registry in good order, on a regular basis, they shouldn’t broadcast
“unsubstantiated opinions”.
I’ve been using CClean Registry clean-up tool, (home
user edition), for several years on several PC’s, without a single problem
with it’s operation, so far. Then again I’m not a “Gamer”, or one to trust
installing every cute app I find on the web, so my PC Registries doesn’t
seem to mess up too much. Even Microsoft’s own Installers leave stuff behind,
and don’t clean up their own messes – requiring a CCLEAN run after that. So, I
wonder if the MS commentator, (Gov Maharaj), is posting a political MS corporate
innuendo, among his “generally” good advice – little of which is aimed at the
“general unskilled PC owner”.
Mind you, any household vacuum cleaner can unknowingly
sweep up a lost diamond ear ring in deep pile carpet, so like vacuum bags
... “Cleaners” of any kind should be checked to see “which apps” are
specifically included in the “check list”. Did that, and caught an error
just once, after a “NERO CLEANUP” trial run, which I found does bad things.
Somehow it (surprisingly) added an app into CCLEAN’s “apps include list” which
was never there in years of use and updates.
Similarly, the long time, much respected “Malwarebytes” cleaner, admits it
is possible for an exception, to put a “false positive identified” app
into its Quarantine jail – as does Microsoft’s MSE a.k.a. DEFENDER, and
CCLEAN.
That is the purpose of their HISTORY tabs and Accept screens – offering the
user a chance to “participate” in the final decision. Most security
findings, have to be left to our “faith” in the program(s), since the
developers know far more about daily threats than we ever could.
Computers aren’t appliances, they are vehicles requiring
a cautious and intelligent human operator.
Nothing is perfect, not even all those “security app programmers” ... even
Microsoft ... although they professionally, try to do absolutely the best they
can for us.

Subject: [ap-gto] vserial7.sys BSOD
Seems lately if I connect TheSkyX to my mount using a virtual
serial port
in APCC I
end up with a Blue Screen Of Death with a message that vserial7.sy
s was
the cause
and a long string of numbers and letters. Using Everything to
search my
system and
APCC shows up as the only program using this file. It's happened a number
of times
and I can't swear it hasn't when TheSkyX wasn't connected. The
last two
times
TheSkyX was definitely connected. This doesn't seem to be an
immediate
issue after
connecting but rather sometime afterward. I can't say the
telescope was
doing
anything at the time of failure as it is likely running s ome
imaging
tasks
through ACP.
I can go out and restart the computer and reconnect everything without
issue. Not
sure where to go from here. Suggestions welcomed.

Hi Joe, Seems to me that if Microsoft can’t keep their Windows Registry in good order, on a regular basis, they shouldn’t broadcast “unsubstantiated opinions”. I think you may be assuming that all registry issues were caused by Microsoft and not by third-party applications and hardware driver installations. The registry is just a database. I do not think it's Microsoft's responsibility to know that applications and drivers are using the registry in the way those applications and drivers intended. When 3rd-party installers and "registry cleaners" start assuming they know what's supposed to be "right" then bad things can happen. I have seem registry cleaners totally destroy systems, so I don't trust them. -Ray Gralak Author of APCC (Astro-Physics Command Center): http://www.astro-physics.com/index.htm?products/accessories/software/apcc/apccAuthor of PEMPro: http://www.ccdware.comAuthor of Astro-Physics V2 ASCOM Driver: http://www.gralak.com/apdriverAuthor of PulseGuide: http://www.pulseguide.comAuthor of Sigma: http://www.gralak.com/sigma-----Original Message----- From: ap-gto@... Ray,
I’m still waiting all these past decades of Windows, for ... “even Microsoft” ... to finally come out with their own “Registry Cleaner”, of the same excellence ;-) as Microsoft Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) antivirus. What is it that is oft quoted about “people who live in glass houses” ?
Seems to me that if Microsoft can’t keep their Windows Registry in good order, on a regular basis, they shouldn’t broadcast “unsubstantiated opinions”.
I’ve been using CClean Registry clean-up tool, (home user edition), for several years on several PC’s, without a single problem with it’s operation, so far. Then again I’m not a “Gamer”, or one to trust installing every cute app I find on the web, so my PC Registries doesn’t seem to mess up too much. Even Microsoft’s own Installers leave stuff behind, and don’t clean up their own messes – requiring a CCLEAN run after that. So, I wonder if the MS commentator, (Gov Maharaj), is posting a political MS corporate innuendo, among his “generally” good advice – little of which is aimed at the “general unskilled PC owner”.
Mind you, any household vacuum cleaner can unknowingly sweep up a lost diamond ear ring in deep pile carpet, so like vacuum bags ... “Cleaners” of any kind should be checked to see “which apps” are specifically included in the “check list”. Did that, and caught an error just once, after a “NERO CLEANUP” trial run, which I found does bad things. Somehow it (surprisingly) added an app into CCLEAN’s “apps include list” which was never there in years of use and updates. Similarly, the long time, much respected “Malwarebytes” cleaner, admits it is possible for an exception, to put a “false positive identified” app into its Quarantine jail – as does Microsoft’s MSE a.k.a. DEFENDER, and CCLEAN. That is the purpose of their HISTORY tabs and Accept screens – offering the user a chance to “participate” in the final decision. Most security findings, have to be left to our “faith” in the program(s), since the developers know far more about daily threats than we ever could.
Computers aren’t appliances, they are vehicles requiring a cautious and intelligent human operator. Nothing is perfect, not even all those “security app programmers” ... even Microsoft ... although they professionally, try to do absolutely the best they can for us.

No Ray,
I do NOT assume that only Microsoft causes Registry
issues – just that they should be causing the least number of them, since they
have had decades of practice improving their Windows apps.
You say that you don’t trust “registry cleaners” –
that’s fine, some folks don’t. Does that mean you do NOT USE them at
all? If so, I would be curious in knowing your method of keeping
your registry clean, in spite of Microsoft and other third party installers and
apps. Indeed, I would like to follow your safer or better method.
Then again, somebody with intensive knowledge and skills
on ferreting out mishaps in the Registry, when Windows doesn’t seem to be
running “quite right” (without error messages), could easily fix the
problem without relying on third party cleaners. The rest of us less skilled,
and least time, have less choice.
Otherwise, it would also be interesting to see just how
many “potential” hits, the challenged CCLEAN would find on your PC ...
just with its “CCLEAN Analyzer” stage, and how many, or percentage of these
listed findings, you recognize as truly bogus – You don’t have to actually
Accept its performing the actual clean-up stage, so no danger to your
potentially pristine system. Maybe you might end of actually trusting CClean,
with proper user settings.
Anyway, to each his own. This registry cleaner has
worked for me for years, while others have not – maybe you have had bad
experiences with some other one(s), assuming you use ... BUT still do not
trust ANY of them.
Nuff said. I accept your confidence that they are
all untrustworthy, but not the Windows Club tactics. I didn’t mean to make a
promotion for the one Cleaner I do trust - until proven otherwise.
Just thought that the linked YouTube “Windows Club” interviewer,
showed a lack of journalistic integrity, (if he were one), by not
challenging his Microsoft “guest” to defend his claim, rather than both of
them sloughing off the presented charge with ... “Lets not talk
about it”. The high powered tech guest seemed like a Microsoft shill, to
me.
Apologies for sliding somewhat off-topic on the BSOD.

Thanks Ray – that is good to know.
I too use an SSD on one observatory laptop.
From reading some web articles, the down side is that
“average “ quality SSD’s (perhaps older ones), had a 3,000 to 5,000 rewrite
cycles lifetime. The really good one’s, using different semiconductor
technology, now have 100,000 rewrites. Unlike hard drives, SSD’s crash in a
different way, perhaps more slowly.
That is why the article I read, recommended to
never allow SSD’s to run Defrag programs, Clean-up programs, or permit
indexing – which aren’t really necessary based on their terrific access speed. I
read that every SSD write operation, first does a block erase – which uses up
one of those precious life cycles. Indexing and writing files does the
same.
Makes me wonder if risking a hard drive’s head crash
would have a longer lifetime.
Still, I find the SSD’s about triple-speed access, compared to spinning
iron HD, is enticing.
But you probably knew all that, and much more.

Hi Joe, From reading some web articles, the down side is that “average “ quality SSD’s (perhaps older ones), had a 3,000 to 5,000 rewrite cycles lifetime. The really good one’s, using different semiconductor technology, now have 100,000 rewrites. Unlike hard drives, SSD’s crash in a different way, perhaps more slowly. Most SSDs have extra redundancy (especially Intel SSDs), so wear and tear is usually not a factor with any of the Tier 1 SSD manufacturers (e.g. Samsung, Intel, Micron, SanDisk, etc.) I've probably purchased a couple dozen SSDs in the last five years. Maybe I'm lucky but I've yet to have one fail. I do run automatic system-wide backups nightly, use Crashplan, and every month or so I use Acronis to make a backup image of my C drive. Still, I find the SSD’s about triple-speed access, compared to spinning iron HD, is enticing. That's not where most of the performance loss happens. When windows is first installed onto a hard-drive all the files are located in the same part of the disk and there are usually only short hard-drive head seeks. After the system has been in use for months and months, the operating system and registry get fragmented all over the disk. Simple defragmentation doesn't help much because windows system files, applications, although defragged, are still randomly placed all over the disk, thus Windows appears to slow down, and often the registry is blamed. So I believe it's the eventual excessive head seeking in hard drives that slows things down. Using an SSD instead will dramatically slow down the eventual system slowdown. BTW, defragmenting files on an SSD is sometimes necessary and helps performance. I have been doing it for a couple years no with no failures or issues. In fact windows 8 and later defrag SSDs automatically: http://www.ghacks.net/2015/01/20/windows-ssds-and-defragmentation-the-definitive-answer/-Ray Gralak Author of APCC (Astro-Physics Command Center): http://www.astro-physics.com/index.htm?products/accessories/software/apcc/apccAuthor of PEMPro: http://www.ccdware.comAuthor of Astro-Physics V2 ASCOM Driver: http://www.gralak.com/apdriverAuthor of PulseGuide: http://www.pulseguide.comAuthor of Sigma: http://www.gralak.com/sigma-----Original Message----- From: ap-gto@... Makes me wonder if risking a hard drive’s head crash would have a longer lifetime. Still, I find the SSD’s about triple-speed access, compared to spinning iron HD, is enticing. But you probably knew all that, and much more.

Steve,
Did you ever get to resolution? I'm having the same issue and the crash dump is pointing to evserial7.sys as well.
