Keypad version 4.19.2

David Illig

I need a brand and model recommendation for a USB-to-Serial adapter with the FTDI chip. Must have male pins, as my mount cable has female. Furthermore, many that are advertised don't say whether the adapter is straight through or null modem. Mac drivers a plus, but not mandatory.

Aside: I have been using a Keyspan USA 49WG four-port adapter for years to control my A-P 1200GTO and two Robofocusers via Mac OS X (mostly) and Windows (Win 7 Pro at present). I was surprised that the keypad 4.19.2 updater would not recognize my mount, as I had just tested the entire chain by operating the mount under Win 7 via TheSkyX Pro and also operating the Robofocusers. I followed instructions to the letter, starting with the keypad disconnected, serial cable in top port of CP3, etc. I  presume the problem is that the Keyspan has the Prolific chip?

One more thing... Marj wrote "Keypad firmware v4.19.2 was developed to correct an issue that occurred when using Park 1 during the first two months of this leap year..." Does that mean that the problem goes away tomorrow, March 1, even without a keypad update?

Many thanks!

David Illig

I don't know if it goes away or not on March 1, but I have been Resuming from Park (2) without difficulty many times over the past two months. Tonight, Feb 29th, it is hooped. I think I will be updating my keypad tomorrow.

The leap year issue is gone now, whether or not you updated the keypad.

Oh!  I drug my feet waiting to make sure all the bugs had been fixed.  And now I don't need to worry about it any more?  Hey, works for me!

Hopefully there will be a new version of the keypad soft/firmware by then! It has been a very long time since the original V4.20 Beta was released. So long in fact that most people don't know it ever existed.

Thanks very much to all who replied. I will install the v. 4.19.2 update later. Still need a recommendation for an FTDI USB-to-Serial adapter...

Thanks again!

David,

    I would trust Startech.
However I used my “single” cable DB serial/USB adapter  by “Sabrent”, and I made sure I chose the FTDI implementation of it (bought at Tiger Direct ). I used it to update my two Keypads last year –

But make sure when buying that it is the FTDI version
Some companies, like Sabrent, when I was buying it in the store,  (for some reason)  carry BOTH, in their product line,  then it is “buyer beware”. If there is any doubt ask the sales clerk to confirm, or check on the web by model number on the package or ad. You do not want a PROLIFIC chip version.

I have been using two of these for several years and am very pleased.  One is for the mount and the other is for my Takometer.

David,

Get the genuine article -- FTDI USR232-10 from Mouser Electronics or DigiKey for something like $24.  This is the smooth white one with blue L.E.D. lights and a 10cm USB cable.  Can't go wrong.

Can I make a request that the Stars menu have an option to input a SAO &/Or Bayer/Flamsteed name in the new Keypad release?

Got an unable to deliver message from Yahoo so my apologies if this comes over twice.

I got this information from George directly on the connectors on the CP4.  Why?  I have a Kendrick Power Pack which has an XLR plug on the Power Pack side.  It also has circuitry to put 15v to the Astro-Physics mount so naturally, I can’t use a CP4 with the Power Pack until Kendrick has a new cable available.  They weren’t even aware of the CP4 upgrade so I worked with Astro-Physics to get them the information.  Hopefully, this will also help other Astro-Physics/Kendrick users.

It is:

2-pin Hirose Digikey HR-1735-ND or Mouser 798-RM12BPE2S71

Pin #1 is the Positive pin.

John, the Digikey part number doesn't give any results on the Digikey website.  The Mouser one works fine. Can you double check the Digikey part number?
