New to Mach 1 - very excited

beebopaloo@...

I have just purchased a new Mach 1 with a C11 Edge and am looking forward to learning all I can from this forum. The mount will also work well with all of my other OTAs and I hope to try them all for imaging. I have done some solar system work with my CG5 and 7" mak but have struggled to capture and process DSOs. This has been a dream of mine for 50 years and I feel that I finally have the set up that will make it possible!

Thanks for reading and sharing my enthusiasm.

Richard,

I got my Mach1 about three years ago which is also used with a C-11. I now never worry about the mount which was always an issue before the Mach1. I suggest that you get a RAPAS. Polar alignment is a snap with this finder and like all AP mounts they like to be polar aligned. With decent balance and polar alignment, a single star sync at startup is sufficient to get more than decent pointing accuracy for visual observing.

For taking photos of DSOs more accurate pointing is needed. For that I use SkyX and its image link feature wherein a short photo gets an astronomic solution that can be used to sync the mount and then a more accurate slew can occur. Read the instructions 3 or four times but the basic process is:

find (the target)

center

slew to the target

take photo

image link (you should be close)

sync (the mount with the astronomic solution)

slew again to the target

take photo again

image link (you should be right on)

I have found that this process leads to quick certainty in framing the DSO as desired.

Good luck with your new Mach1. Send newbie questions to the forum. It is a very helpful group.

regards,
