AP Telescope Production

Who says time passes quickly,I have been on a waiting list that seems forever. Does anyone have any idea of how many telescopes are fabricated by Astro-Physics in a years time? I also am curious of just which models are are being built or planned? I really am not interested in purchasing a used one and hate to put a non Astro-Physics refractor on my Astro-Physics 1200 mount. To bad I don't live next door to the their shop, to bring chocolate chip cookies daily to even my chances!- Michael

I would buy a new TEC while waiting. In my opinion, it will do just fine while you wait for your new A-P.

AP does what it does. Lately they've been producing the 130 refractors, Mach 1, 900 and 1200GTO mounts. I don't think anyone except AP knows for sure the production numbers. Also, there is usually nothing wrong with a preciously owned AP refractor. I got on the AP155 list in 1999 but bought a 'used' one in 2001 and it was virtually as good a new. I then received my AP160 in 2006 and passed the 155 on to a new user...pretty much in perfect condition. Then, there are a lot of AP1200GTO mounts out there carrying non AP OTA's... like Tec's, Rcos', Tak, Planewave, ASA and even Celestron and Meade... and they don't care..:)) I'm cookies would be appreciated but probably wouldn't move you up in line much. Don¹t wait, life's to short and the AP waiting list is not. I used a Televue
NP-101 on my AP1200GTO for a couple of years waiting on a new OTA and the AP1200 was happy to carry that light load. The time will pass much faster with a nice scope to enjoy while you wait. This is something I can vouch for as well with the purchase of a Tak FSQ
while waiting for the now defunct Traveler. I have not looked back since given the incredible optics and work this little beast ha produced. So much so that it is not going anywhere even I get notified for a Traveler today, next month or next year. Anthony. ???? 1/19/2012 00:39, ?/? Scott Hammonds ??????:

I've had a Tak FSQ-106n, Tak FS-128, even the Meade 12 act, etc on my AP1200 (and also previously a 900) mount.
While the fit and finish - and optical quality - of the AP refractors is fantastic, there's also other OTAs out there that will let you enjoy the most wonderful AP 1200 mount. http://www.pbase.com/jeffcrilly/image/140997326/large.jpg http://www.pbase.com/jeffcrilly/image/114146584/large.jpg -jeff On Jan 18, 2012, at 2:39 PM, Scott Hammonds wrote: Dont wait, life's to short and the AP waiting list is not. How do you mount the scopes with the pier being so tall?!?!? Peter,
I mount and dismount the scopes each session and which includes the RHA which is the heaviest of the bunch. From what I recall, I picked up the 54" pier and which is slightly higher than what I wished, for the 48" pier would have been better. The only possible issue in this regard is the RHA but it is still quite manageable. For what its worth, I used to lift weights when much younger and perhaps this is something which is helping me right now. Anthony. ???? 1/19/2012 20:02, ?/? topboxman2000 ??????:

I have heard that many people are pleased with the Celestron Edge for the 3500mm range. I have an older 14" Meade LX200 OTA that I really like but it doesn't have the flat field of the newer Meade and Celestron Edge 14" OTA's. I would love to get a larger Planewave or RC but the price jumps very quickly when looking at the 3500mm+ focal length. You have a dream setup now....enough to keep you busy anyway. Cheers, Chuck/divenuts 'Poor' but happy with the 14" Meade and FSQ on the unequaled AP1200GTO... ----- Original Message -----

I have seen some exceptional work using the 11" EdgeHD. There was also a very positive article in S&T about two years ago by Dennis di Cicco to the same effect involving the 14" EdgeHD. About two weeks ago there was a thread on the SBIG forum involving results using an 11" EdgeHD and everyone was thoroughly impressed at the quality of the results. Take a peek at http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/SBIG/message/236270 for the two stunning results. A friend locally has the 11" EdgeHD and I will ask him for a brief loan. He sent me a sample result taken and which I run through CCDInspector: http://www.perseus.gr/EquipPage/ccdinspector-C11-EdgeHD-results.jpg . Drew Sullivan mentioned to me that some people have experienced cooldown issues with the 14" EdgeHD. Anthony. ???? 1/20/2012 00:35, ?/? divenuts ??????:

Very frustrating and silly! Here you go, Rolando: ------------------------ cut here ------------------------- Here are my first two images from my C11 EdgeHD at f/10 and ST-10XE. The image scale is .5 arcsec/px with an image train of: C11 Edge; Hutech OAG using SBIG Remote Guide Head; SBIG CFW8 w LRGB Astronomik filters and ST-10XE. I am able to position the ST-10 imaging chip farther back than the C11 Edge calls for. The optimum back focus for the scope is 150mm but I am shooting with the camera chip at about 180mm because the ST-10 chip does not require as large a flat field. My guess is that if I put an ST-8300 on it, the field would not be flat. I was able to acquire so many background galaxies in the NGC 772 shot that they almost upstage the main galaxy. Being able to acquire distant, small objects was the reason that I moved from a 980mm refractor FL to the 2800mm FL of the C11 Edge. Full details are under the image. Thanks for mentioning the Mach1GTO which I meant to do but forgot. This is from a $2400 scope (resale market on Astromart). This is a great time for amateurs given the variety and pricing. Incredible bang for the buck with the EdgeHD series. Anthony. |
