Re: Tracking w/ Passil 4 polar alignment

Christopher Erickson

Depending on the lens focal lengths, personally I have found polar alignments with a PASILL4 to be more than accurate enough for astrophotography with SLR's ranging up to 30 minute exposures for wide fields.

Could be flexure someplace. If both cams show the same defects then it is something they both have in common.

Long cam lenses can exhibit a lot of flexure and sag, depending on how and where they are attached to the plate. And on their design and quality.

Turn off image stabilization too. It often has trouble with very dim scenes. And turn off autofocus, of course.

I hope this helps.

I've long been attracted to the Veil Nebula, but never could image NGC6960, The Witch's Broom, because my old ST-8 CCD camera bloomed the bright star. But my current ASI1600MCP one-shot color CMOS camera doesn't bloom, so now this target is in play.

Recently I managed to acquire nearly 5 hours of data over three rare clear nights, and hope to get another 3-4 hours when the sky clears again. Here's what I have so far: <http://astronomy.mdodd.com/nebulae-17.html>;

I rotated the camera to capture as much of the "broom" as possible on the sensor, corner-to-corner. I never knew there was so much faint H-a nebulosity close-by. Maybe additional data will reveal more.

Comments and suggestions welcome.

I setup and aligned on Polaris and second star.
That routine is not good enough for polar alignment for imaging. You will either need to use a polar scope or other precision polar align method. You will also need to have a good PE correction curve loaded and turned on in order to get good RA tracking.

Hi group,
Would someone comment on the Mach1 tracking capability with only visual polar alignment using the PASILL4.
I setup and aligned on Polaris and second star. I was using Cassidy double bar with two cameras on either side of the mount center. My 400mm lens and Canon RA were used to capture images. I got about 30% smearing of the stars at 25 sec exposures. I seem to recall doing better than this in the past; however, I’m usually using autoguider, so I’m not sure what I should expect. Thanks for any input.

OK so my happiness lasted for a week and now the issue is back. Or at least I assume (hope?) that this is related to the problem.

The mount refused to connect today through the SGP and when I disconnected and connected the Ra cable the Ra motor started to make a grinding sound trying to rotate the axes without luck. I then tried the Dec cable and both ends of the new Y cable to Ra motor with the same grinding result. As it was getting dark I didn’t open the gearbox cover anymore tonight.

Let me know if the attached video doesn’t upload and I can drop it to google drive.

Thanks,

Re: FITS Image Header Issues Using APPM-Help!

Hi Scott

I would say that going back to the previous version of Windows should be the last resort, and I am not sure how to do that either. I have seen comments from several people on the forum (including Roland) stating that they have disabled the automatic Windows updates, but I am not sure that this is a good idea. As aggravating as these updates can be, they are usually done to fix some kind of bug or provide enhanced performance. It is the same for all of the astronomy software that we use. There are always bugs to be fixed or enhancements added. Otherwise, everything we run would still be on version 1.0.

Just make sure after every Windows update that you reboot your computer at least once before trying to run any of your astronomy related software.

Ray can probably give you better advice on whether the Windows updates are a problem. Sometimes these updates will restore default settings. One of the particularly aggravating settings is the USB Selective Suspend which was re-enabled in the Windows 1909 update. The instructions below came from the Diffraction Limited forum for MaxIm DL:

Michael, my standard 900 mounting plate already had the three bolt pattern for the ADATRI tripod adapter.  It was just a matter of bolting the ADATRI onto my existing 900 plate.

That’s amazing.  My Keyspan hasn’t worked since Win-98 2nd Edition.  Of course, I gave up on it then too and haven’t tried it since.

I think Roland got confused and didn’t realize you have an old CP3.  He’s been living in CP4 and now CP5 land now for too long.
