MY name is Charles Sinsofsky, I am the author of DigitalSky Voice
and the Astro-Physics GTO mount code found in the hand-controller.
Now HERE is someone who can really answer our questions! Charles, I
want to thank YOU for designing such great software in the hand
controller. I haven't played with DigitalSky Voice enough, but it looks
to be a superb product.

Re: Expand the group?

First, I would like to welcome all of our new members--sorry, but I
haven't had time to send you individual e-mails.

There has been substantial interest in a general AP e-group, analogous
to MAPUG.

As an interim solution, I think we should do the following:

Make an additional AP e-group (call it ap for now).

Invite everyone on this ap-gto list to subscribe--this would be easy.
You do NOT need to accept the invitation.

We can then see if it is worth it to continue two groups or merge them.

For now, I see a need for two groups:

Someone with a Meade SCT on a 900 GTO does not need to hear about other
AP products. Conversely, someone with an AP 130 EDF on a G-11 mount may
not need to hear the latest about DigitalSkyVoice. Of course, many will
want to join both lists. Then we can see how things go...

Thanks for listening to my blatherings, and comments are welcome.

Derek,

I support the idea of two groups. The current GTO group can stay fairly
small and specialized, while the general AP group can cover a wide range of
AP-related topics. I would hate to see the GTO group become a MAPUG and lose
its focus.

Extra note, A/P and myself are building a substantial list of A/P mount
owners who of course regisitered DSV with us. We should somehow get them
notifed of the listserve for the a/p mount and dsv...it definatly would be
an asset here.

RS232 cable & Microphones

Tim Khan

Hi Everyone, this is my first post, gald to see a users group online.

Just recently made a long cable (25') for connecting the laptop
computer to the my 1200 mount (because the computer stores in Miami
dont sell anything longer than 10 feet). I tested the cable by using a
ohm meter, all the pins (4 only) have no resistance what so ever. I
wont get to test it on the mount until it clears, September perhaps.

Has anyone found a good wireless mic thats battery powered, including
the base unit? Or, should I make a mic chord extension?

Tim,
Miami, FL

The Shure microphone that is wireless has been used with DSV and it appears
to work just great. I am waiting on a responce from a user who is using or
wants to use the R/S wireless mike, and I asked him to get back to me on his
results.

- Charles

p.s. the Shure mike can be obtained though A/P contact them for pricing.

However, by having the equipment discussions
on an email list you, hopefully, will cut out the
comments by jerks who like to knock AP but
have never owned any AP equipment. JJG.
comes to mind.

I think the big advantage is that not everyone has a newsserver that carries
every newsgroup, and a dedicated
AP newsgroup would most likely not have the traffic to be picked up by a lot
of newsservices. Plus, this format
is easier to moderate.

Hi Mark:

Sorry about verification #, but I don't know what it means--all I know
is that you are on the list.

Newsgroups like s.a.a. are fine, but there are several disadvantages:

1. Spam city--I get several duplicate Viagra messages a day. E-groups
e-mail lists can be harvested, but it is much more difficult.

2. Extra messages--look at all the porno which already gets through on
s.a.a.

3. Moderation--there is no easy way to kick troublemakers off a
newsgroup--with an e-group all it takes is a keystroke.

4. Fewer useless debates--look at the GOTO vs. starhopping or Mak-Newt
vs. APO threads. Sure, there are a few useful messages, but many posts
are garbage. I have no problems with useful discussions, but when the
debate gets off topic it can be terminated.

New AP group and other comments

Derek Wong <dawong@...>

Before I start I'd like to thank the "father" of this group, Howard
Lazarus. Without his hard work we would never have been here.

I created a new AP user's e-group, ap-ug (make sure you put in the
hyphen--apug is another e-group!). This group will be for general
discussions of AP equipment other than GTO mounts/software.

I have invited all of you on the list to join ap-ug. If you don't want
to join, just ignore the e-mail message which will be in your boxes
shortly. If you want to join, follow the instructions.

One member of the group unsubscibed after less than 24 hrs. because he
couldn't access the archives. You should be able to access the messages
at
http://www.egroups.com/list/ap-gto/
If there is a problem with this please send me a private e-mail.
Also, pardon me if I respond slowly--I'm still new at this!

Thanks,
