I just paid Astro-Physics $20K for a new AP AEL mount and required accessories. Now I learn that over the next 20 years I am going to be nickel and dimed for the software I need to run it. This is on top of the recent price increase for the mount itself. While I hear you say that the mount will continue to operate using the current version of APCC Pro, will that still be the case 5, 10 or 15 years from now? If APCC Pro breaks due to changes to the Windows operating system or due to updates to other 3rd party software I use with mount, are these considered “bugs” or “enhancements”?
As I understand it, AE mounts require APCC Pro so if we purchased a mount with encoders we are locked into paying the higher $100 vs. $50 annual maintenance fees. This would appear to penalize those of us that purchased AE mounts.
While I can appreciate the need to secure future revenue streams to “pay” for future enhancements, I think this is a little disingenuous to suggest that current and past customers should pay for these enhancements. Looking over the changes to APCC over the last 5 years, I am not seen anything that would justify a $100 annual maintenance fee. Other than the couple of changes announced yesterday what other “enhancements” would we have needed to pay for over the last 5 years under the new Software as a Service (SaaS) model?
I don’t mind paying up for the Astro-Physics telescopes, mounts and accessories as I think the quality and support is industry leading. What I didn’t expect from a company like Astro-Physics is to learn after purchasing a mount that I need to pay an annual fee just to keep it up-to-date. I think of Astro-Physics as the “Apple” of the astronomy equipment manufactures. I have had Apple products for many years and I don’t ever remember having to pay a maintenance fee to update my devices to the latest version that included both bug fixes and enhancements. I am just a bit disappointed that AP would be adopting this SaaS model that seems to be taking the industry by storm.

Totally reasonable. Time to move on. Instead, consumers are confused and we seem to have an automatic reaction to the “software subscription” term. Imo it could be worse. Eg lots of software requires full price to get the new version.) I stopped using Apple years ago, but correct me if I’m wrong. Apple only provides updates for a period of time, and afterwards you have to buy a new phone to keep using it with current iTunes, app store, getting security updates, etc.
So while those updates are free, their solution is to ensure you throw your old phone away and have to buy a new one.
Thank goodness Astro-Physics isn’t the Apple of mounts, I’d really like to keep this more than 3-4 years you can keep an iPhone going. 😊
My impression is that Ray intends to keep issuing bug fixes forever, free. Forever is a long time, but laudable intent.
Just to offer a counterpoint, I’m happy to pay the $100/year just to further encourage development and pay for all the free support I probably will need over the years. It’s barely a rounding error really in the investment in the mount.
And for the record (and from someone in the industry): It is NOT a SaaS model. If it were, when you don’t pay, it just stops.

#APCC
ap@CaptivePhotons.com
I did some more investigation with morning eyes, and I think there is some sequence of events that gets the Image Link Test to not work.
I specifically did this:
“The file could not be opened or error processing file: Object reference not set to an instance of an object”.
The APPM log, if I am interpreting it correctly, looks like the plate solve ran and succeeded. I see no sign of this error in the log, only the screen. Ray, if it’s useful to you and you think worth pursuing, today’s logs are:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1n9EfsZT6AuIlUHCWBx0lmJcx0ZnQ1H7j/view?usp=sharing
The longer log is the one that failed (though there is no sign there of failure I see, only on the screen). The next in time was me starting APPM again, not even connecting, and using image link test and having it work. The third is just empty, not sure how that snuck in.
This does NOT seem to affect running the model – I’ve run through several partial ones and it runs fine, solves fine (+/- quality of the survey images that are simulating). It runs fine even after this error appears. I do not know if this error is triggered specific to NINA, something about the simulated images, or just from the (partial aborted?) model run, but it is repeatable as above.
But I think there’s some state of the internal objects that is getting corrupted that breaks the image link test button. It does NOT break the plate solve button on the RUN screen. It’s just this image link test button.
It’s a small nit I mention in case helpful, it certainly doesn’t get in the way of using this. Everything I’ve tried worked fine, except some no-solve images which I can’t solve manually either, so not relevant.
Now if I could just get a clear sky to try it for real.
Thank you for a giant step forward for both NINA users, and those with ‘too much resolution’ cameras!

I don't understand your concern. You bought APCC with certain features. Apparently you were happy with what you got. It is yours forever. You even get bug fixes for free, forever, if I understand correctly. Now, a software engineer (I was one once, also) wrote new modules/features that you can, at your discretion, for $100.00. Don't think of it as a subscription, because it really isn't. It's new software that you can purchase. -- George Prineville, Oregon

Mike,
The new features will be available if your license date is 8/1/2020 or later. You can check that in this APCC menu: Help->View/Update License Subscription.
The reason for uninstalling the old version then installing the new version is to ensure that the new version 9 of the Elitima Virtual Port COM driver is installed.
To check that it is installed:
1) Start APCC so that it creates a couple of virtual ports. 2) Open Device Manager and click on “Ports (COM and LPT)” to show available ports. 3) Right-Mouse click one of the ELTIMA Virtual Serial ports and select “Properties”. 4) In the properties window, check the driver version on the “Driver” tab. 5) The version should be 9.0.369.0 or later. If not, you should uninstall/reinstall 1.9.0.x.

In fact the APCC software overall feels snappier and more responsive than before. APPM is slinging the Mach 2 around (with the same monster load on it) like nothing. ASTAP finishes a solve and APPM immediately consumes that data and moves to the next point.
Before, there was a lag when Image Link would finish it solve and when APPM would realize that, now that seems to be gone (at least with ASTAP).
The model is cooking along at a very fast clip. Will report back on its total time (was 50 mins before, give or take 1) but this seems way better, and I have been building models and giving feedback now for about 4 years.
TL:DR; Sehr gut.

Hi,
Just tried the new platesolving feature with APPM/ASTAP (using the "Image Link Test" button in APPM) and it always results in failed attemps (near or blind)... Tried several Fits file and it always ends up the same (failed after a few seconds wait). If I open
up the same files directly in ASTAP, they platesolve in less than a second... I double checked that coordinates, camera angle and image scale were correctly retrieved from the Fits header and tried increasing the radius search field to 360 deg... no luck.
I also set all the settings to 0 (to use the default from ASTAP) and again, it failed.
Not sure what else I could try. I should add ASTAP platesolve works correctly in other third party app (NINA, APT).
APPM log file shows the platesolve actually succeeded but ends with an exception saying "user clicked cancel or close" which I didn't in all cases. See log extract below. I can provide a
link to some subs I tried if it helps and/or the full log file.
Unfortunately, I can't test the real run under the stars as the sky's clouded, obviously...

Re: #APCC Pro 1.9 w/ASTAP platesolve test always fails
#APCC
Bill Long
In fact the APCC software overall feels snappier and more responsive than before.

Can you please share the FIT file?
I am about to do a full APMM model run here in a moment. Will reply back with the results.

Hi,
Just tried the new platesolving feature with APPM/ASTAP (using the "Image Link Test" button in APPM) and it always results in failed attemps (near or blind)...
Sébastien

So that’s odd in a slightly different way – I set up NINA as the camera, and ASTAP as the plate solver. I was using a simulator for the camera in NINA that downloads image survey files.
The overall process worked fine, in that any image I could solve with ASTAP also solved during the RUN option.
The plate solve button on the RUN tab worked.
The Image Link Test button would not work at all for me, Keeps saying “the file could not be opened” after it opened the file and provided the header info (and I hit plate solve).
I was debating whether to mention to see if someone else had issues with it. Which maybe you did?
But… the underlying link worked nicely, APPM invoked NINA’s camera, returned a file, plate solved, etc. I did have some issues that the survey images would sometimes not solve, but it was the image – I’d try by hand, tried TSX, nothing would solve it (except astronometry.net, which I think can solve a cup of coffee given time). But that is about the simulator, nothing to do with the new features.
The new features are very cool, being able to avoid using the 32 bit camera routine’s limitations in particular! And no more need for TSX!
