Re: APCC Pro version update

Hi Greg,
So, while I have no doubt that APCC is not getting out to check for versions, I don't know how to fix it.As I pointed out before, turning the firewall off doesn't always solve the problem. You could be running a Windows update that is blocking APCC, or maybe there is a bad device driver on your NUC. You might also check to see how many LANs are on your NUC by typing "ipconfig" from a command prompt. Maybe the request is getting sent out the wrong network adapter (e.g. a Virtual LAN). If you are running IPV6 on your NUC, you may want to disable that. I really can't think of anything else to try besides updating Window 10 to the latest build (20H2), applying all updates, and also downloading and installing the latest .Net 4.8 Framework (if you haven't already). -Ray Gralak Author of PEMPro Author of APCC (Astro-Physics Command Center): https://www.astro-physics.com/apcc-pro Author of Astro-Physics V2 ASCOM Driver: https://www.siriusimaging.com/apdriver -----Original Message-----

I assume you mean 1.8.8.13.

I clicked on the link in this email (on my main desktop), downloaded the .exe file, transferred the file to my laptop (which is where I use APPC Pro) and then ran the transferred file. Everything is working fine now. I did not have to make any anti-virus or firewall changes on either machine (both Windows 10). David C. Finch

I should also mention that the clean install of version 1.8.8.13 on the MSI laptop that did work is on the same network which should eliminate router issues.
So both are using the same router which has been working fine for a few years. (just for completeness, the router happens to be an ASUS RT-AC88U connected to an Australian NBN FTTB connection via an old Telstra modem that converts ethernet to VDSL2 - The ASUS router is running the latest firmware)

Hi Ray
I tried both method 1 & 2 at that link with no success. re https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/how-to-unblock-an-application/d6e4a1a3-e94c-4f1f-810b-f380266a7be4?page=1 I had to reinterpret the method for win10 Method 1) I typed in User Account Control in the windows search bar. Clicked on change user account control Slide bar down to Never Notify Method 2) The Everyone group already existed so I just clicked Full Control I rebooted This didn't fix the issue. I uninstalled APCC and reinstalled without changing any settings. Still not working. I then did method 3 in that link and it didn't fix the issue Method 3) I already had disabled the firewall I turned off the win10 virus protection So, while I have no doubt that APCC is not getting out to check for versions, I don't know how to fix it. I noticed in the firewall settings, other astro programs have explicit lines in the application list allowing access through the firewall Even though the firewall is off, I tried adding apcc app into this table and checking the box to allow access. This also made no difference so I then removed the apcc entry I added. regards Greg

I suspect this must be happening to a lot of people that don't even know it.So far, for everyone with this issue that I have checked with, the request is not getting to the server, so something is blocking the request on Windows or on the private LAN's router. When you first install APCC you may get an internet access popup. If you don't allow APCC it won't be able to check for updates. Here's a link that may help: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/how-to-unblock-an-application/d6e4a1a3-e94c-4f1f-810b-f380266a7be4 -Ray Gralak Author of PEMPro Author of APCC (Astro-Physics Command Center): https://www.astro-physics.com/apcc-pro Author of Astro-Physics V2 ASCOM Driver: https://www.siriusimaging.com/apdriver -----Original Message-----

I still get a blank space in the latest version. As an exercise, I loaded APCC on my second astro computer which was an MSI 15" laptop all with the latest updates of apps and windows 10 (64bit). This was a clean install of 1.8.8.13 and not an upgrade of 1.8.8.9 which I started with on the NUC and it worked OK for the update check. So, with the firewall still disabled on the NUC, I uninstalled APCC (ie. with the version 9 upgraded to now 13), restarted the NUC and installed 1.8.8.13. This made no difference to the fault. I also noted some files must have remained on the NUC as I did not have to redo the license. I suspect this must be happening to a lot of people that don't even know it. We thought we had the latest when we downloaded 1.8.8.9 as per latest instructions but find we had a fault and also the web site pointed to old software. So now I ask myself, do I (and others) keep trolling the web looking and trying stuff or do we just occasionally check back somewhere on the web to see if an update exists and hope links are updated and we catch the latest information. I'm in the group of no updates being reported but I also don't get anything for what the latest version is. Seems this started back some months ago when I 1st saw there was an update posted here but not showing up on my then version which I couldn't tell you what that was and was given a direct link. Hasn't worked for updates since. I simply just looked for announcements here and downloaded as they came but didn't see several as there are surprises now when I do see them and I'm several updates back.

Hi Michael,
Ray I got it resolved tonight. I did a full uninstall and removed all traces of ascom platform and the AP ascomOkay, excellent! On the ASCOM help list, I have noticed some people have had issues with upgrading their ASCOM platform. Sometimes the upgrade fails. Occasionally old components won't get updated. It may be an issue with the installer builder that they use. I tried using that tool a while back to build installers, and there were some issues, so I stopped using it. -Ray Gralak Author of PEMPro Author of APCC (Astro-Physics Command Center): https://www.astro-physics.com/apcc-pro Author of Astro-Physics V2 ASCOM Driver: https://www.siriusimaging.com/apdriver -----Original Message-----

Longer than polemaster software, shorter than sharpcap :) one of the benefits for me of using the polemaster camera is it is a larger aperture so i can start PA earlier in the evening. Brian

Another cool thing about SharpCap Pro is you can connect ASCOM mount driver to the mount so that the software knows where the mount is pointing to and I believe it estimates refraction where Polaris is. You have to manually enable this in SharpCap Pro.

Ray I got it resolved tonight. I did a full uninstall and removed all traces of ascom platform and the AP ascom driver from the registry. Then I downloaded a fresh copy of each and did the re-install. After setting up APCC again and learning I had to re-install literally all of my ascom stuff, I did a model with APPM and had success. I am glad it was an easy fix. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. I was aware of the ASCOM bug but didn't think it would bite me.

SharpCap Pro is easier to work with initially. When it works...Yah their software leaves a lot to be desired for sure. What bugs me is that even after rotating the frame to align the stars in the circles they actually don't align in the center. They make the camera. They make the focal length of the lens. They make the focus point. And they make the software. The stars don't move that fast even though the universe is expanding so why the heck don't the stars align in the center of the circles?? It works though. But I do want to try Sharpcap with this camera and see if the combination of the camera being easy to use and the Sharpcap software pole align will be a winner.

I find SharpCap Pro much easier to use than PoleMaster software. It doesn't matter whether PoleMaster is orthogonal or not as long as you can see the stars surrounding Polaris. SharpCap Pro uses true plate solving unlike PoleMaster software. SharpCap Pro is not free and it's an annual subscription that costs only 10 euro and it's worth it.Hi Peter. I actually own a license of Sharpcap. The reason I wasn't using it is because of the field of view of my OTA and the full frame QHY600 camera that was taking forever to download images. It would not plate solve at all. However, the idea I want to try is to plug in the PoleMaster camera into the mount as it was made to do but instead of using QHY's software I instead load up Sharpcap and see how that goes. Good news is I resolved the issue I was having. Was, as Ray said, related to the ASCOM driver. I did have 6.5 SP1 but there must have been something wonky because when I did a full uninstall and removed traces from the registry and then a new install along with a new install of the AP Ascom Driver it suddenly worked great.

Thanks for the additional information. I'm portable so set up most every session. I have paver stones marked for the tripod points and the mount/tripod location marked with tape so I can use the same rotational center even after a new setup. Polar alignment takes just a couple minutes for me with PoleMaster/PoleMaster software. The pointing precision on the go-tos after alignment never fails to amaze me. It's always worth try with Sharpcap. Maybe I'll give it a go when I'm out testing new parts and pieces rather than imaging.

Like Brian mention, I could in theory use Sharpcap against the Polemaster camera. But Sharpcap would still do the axis-of-rotation check every time, which the Polemaster software doesn't require.
