Re: #APCC Pro 1.9 w/ASTAP platesolve test always fails
#APCC
Ray Gralak
Hi Sebastion,
What’s the full name of the file? APPM might have extracted the RA/Dec coordinates from the filename. It does this for working with the files it creates.
Regarding the DLL problem, that is probably the fault of your anti-virus program, which is likely being overly protective. J
As for the NASA SkyView, have you tried reading the help? You can click the little “?” button in the upper right corner of most tabs and/or group boxes to pull up context-sensitive help. Here’s the link to the same information online:

Hello Ray,
Relative to this same "Image Test Link" function, I also encountered a file where the fits data was improperly parsed. RA and DEC were significantly off - see below. The camera angle wasn't correct either, only image scale was. Solve failed because of this. Not sure if it has to do with J2000 (coord in fits) to JNow (which AP software seem to use by default) calculation, but the difference does not account for that much error. I can provide image file as well as full Fits header and logs if required.
Excellent, thank you. That wasn't entirely clear to me. That is now! 🙂
No problem, I'll open another thread specific to this but maybe another day...
For now, I might have found another issue relative to an "offline platesolving test tool" in APPM w/ASTAP, that is the "Test Solve Images in a folder..." under "Tools" menu.
First thing (not really related to solving per se) is I had to launch APPM in Administrator mode to make the tool work the first time. I got the error below when I first hit "Start Plate Solves" button. Error translates to: "Module siUtils3.dll was loaded but a call to DLLRegisterServer failed with error code..."
After I clicked OK, this poped-up:
Then, I closed APPM and after re-opening in admin mode, I got this: (success of what had failed before)
After that, ASTAP invokation started correctly everytime I clicked the button (didn't need to open as admin). Got exact same thing on 2 different computers. Not sure if this is documented somewhere - haven't seen it in the help file - but I just tought I'd report it since its a bit unintuitive to the newcomer.
That was the extent of my success with this though. Indeed, I wasn't able to have a single file solved with success even with some 4-to-3-characters-converted-extension-fits (see logs extract below)... Before you ask, both files below were successfully solved with the "Image Link Test" button (one file is the same as earlier). I noticed the parameters passed along to ASTAP are weird looking: -ra 0, -spd 90, etc.? and they do not seem configurable with this tool, unless I missed a configuration pane somewhere. End result is ASTAP can't find a solution for one image and doesn't return any output for the other (using the same command line reported in APPM log file below). Couldn't find anything useful to help troubleshoot this in the manual either, so again, thought it was worth reporting.
And last, while it may be a bit off-topic (but since I started it...) while I was in the area, I peeked and poked the "Create NASA Starview Images Reference" under "Tools" menu, and it didn't seem to do anything (doesn't record anything in APPM's log either). Are these images saved somewhere ? What's their purpose relative to modeling ? Maybe I just need a little education here...
Thanks, Sébastien

Why doesn’t APCC doesn’t tell me there is a communication error when I ask it to park? Please watch the video.

The driver being blank is an indication that you lost communication with the mount. Happened to me when my USB connection failed. When this happens in APCC the handshake is interrupted and the mount automatically parks itself to avoid slowly tracking the scope into the pier (thus avoids pier crash).

Hi David,
The blank fields in the driver’s window imply that driver is not communicating with APCC, or that APCC was not communicating with the mount.
I can take a look if you use the APCC log zipper utility to zip the APCC and AP V2 driver logs and provide a dropbox, google driver, or other link to this zip file.

David,
It seems strange that you have COM3 as a virtual port. How do you have them set up?

Is there a need to register anything, software or mount, bought directly from AP?

> How is the Dec-Arc tracking region determined?
You define the points in APPM the same as you always have. The dec-arc region is bounded by the edge of the sky data points created using APPM. However, the because the all-sky model calculates pointing terms, APCC can calculate corrections both inside and outside of the edges of the data points.
Maybe this picture will help?

But I was still wondering if theAs I have said several times in other posts, if a target falls outside of the Dec-Arc tracking region the all-sky model's tracking rate calculation will be used instead. And of course if the target is inside the Dec-Arc tracking region then the Dec-Arc tracking rate will be used when Dec-Arc tracking is enabled. There is no need to check/uncheck the Dec-Arc tracking checkbox. I hope that is that clear now?? -Ray -----Original Message-----

Re: Dec-Arc Tracking in APCC Pro v1.9 - an explainer please?
you don't need two models. You can enable dec arc tracking with an all sky model the whole "you can build a smaller model with two dec arcs, one on each side of your target" is really for mobile users or people who set up each night and can't/don't want to build an all sky model So if you have an all sky model, you just enable dec arc tracking (or disable it by unchecking the box)
