Re: APCC PRO and Horizons

Hi Philip

JPL data went through a change recently, and you may need to update your APCC to the latest

you may also search the forums for discussion on this, i seem to recall the process may have changed, but I can't find that thread offhand

Just a quickie hopefully. I have the Pro version of APCC and recently went to use the Horizons feature in order to slew over to observe the JWST. The link within APCC takes you to the JPL Horizons Ephemeris page but I noticed that the 6th option to save the results as plain text is no longer there.

I tried various ways to copy and paste the data into Horizons as plain text, including copying it from the webpage into Notepad first, saving it as TXT in order to lose any formatting and then copying/pasting that into Horizons. No matter what I did Horizons still kept on throwing out various error messages.

I'm sure there is a solution to this but until I find it, it seems I cannot currently use Horizons to control the mount positioning.

APCC Pro and a weird error #APCC #Mach2GTO

Marcelo Figueroa

Last night at the end of the APCC Pro session (1.9.0.11) I was surprised with this error. The strange thing is that the mount, a Mach2, worked fine all night and the session frames look perfectly normal.

Any idea what it is about?

Re: Power supply question - Powerwerx SPS-30DM

The end of the connector pin of an Anderson Power Pole connector has to hook over the spring.  Under normal circumstances it will and it will stay there no matter how abusive you are.  Then you have to use a tool to depress the spring to pull the pin out if needed.  If the pin is not catching on the spring like you say, then possibilities I see are:  spring was damaged or caught and not engaging thoroughly; pin is bent possibly from crimping or trying to cram a tight wire and pin into the hole (can happen w AP 45's and heavy wire with thick insulation that doesn't want to fit); pin "hook" portion is damaged in some way so it does not hook.  You've likely done something so its probably worth it to toss the connector out and start again with a new connector and crimped pins being careful when you insert them that you don't bend things if forcing a thick wire/insulation into the back.  I've wasted more than a few.  And of course make sure you have the pin the right way around as well - I've done that too.  I use the special crimper that holds the pins in place while crimping, so the pins don't get bent relative to the crimp.  That has saved my posterior a few times I'm sure.  I've even soldered wires to pins post crimping but be careful with that as it can cause its own problems.

On a similar but different note, I'm almost always portable in the field and away from AC so I use a 120Ah Lithium stuffed into a Minn Kota troller battery case with some added PowerWerx and Amazon bits for distribution and monitoring.
Its one of the best things that I've done for my field kit - battery is less than half the weight of a similar Lead Acid, and not really much more than a good AGM of that size.  The battery drops right into the Minn Kota case which has a handle to make it easier to carry, and a couple of circuit breakers.  The monitor is one of those battery capacity ones that keeps an eye on voltage and AH used (after programming it) and the background green LED for it, the biggest pain, can be programmed to stay off.  It still glows a bit but nothing like it did before.  The PowerWerx RigRunner 4005 is basic but gives me fused ports for the mount, camera, etc.  I run everything including the laptop off of this and I can get 2 nights out of it, even in the cold.  Just don't try recharging a Lithium battery when it is below freezing as they don't like it.  And it charges MUCH faster than Lead Acid and I can use it when camping with my CPAP.

Good luck.
Christopher

Lickity-split that grease kit is already here. I bought my AP1600 used. In the Greasing mounts instructions the last topic is : 1600GTO, 1100GTO, and Mach1GTO with Auto-Adjust Motor Boxes. How do I check to see if my mount has a Auto-Adjust Motor box?

Re: Mach 2 Lunar Tracking

Roland Christen

The keypad automatically sends Lunar rate when the Moon is chosen, solar rate when the sun is chosen and sidereal rate when any other object is chosen. You can also choose manually the King rate when imaging, and a custom rate which becomes active if you model a number of stars on either side of the meridian.

I generally use the Keypad/GTOCP5 goto capability or SkySafari/iPhone to find celestial targets.  Questions:

1. If I use the Keypad/GTOCP5 and select the moon, will the Mach 2 automatically adjust to the lunar tracking rate (vs sidereal)?

2. If I use SkySafari/iPhone and select the moon, will the Mach 2 automatically adjust to the lunar tracking rate (vs sidereal)?

Re: Mach 2 Lunar Tracking

Shawn,

I use SkySafari-6 Pro Android and it does NOT automatically change tracking rate depending on the object selected or after a GOTO to the Moon or Sun with my Celestron mounts.

I haven’t used SkySafari on my Mach1 for so long I can’t remember if automatically switches tracking rates either – but I doubt it very much.  I think it’s the software controlling the mount that would do that – and in my experience, SkySafari doesn’t do that on any of my mounts.

And again, it’s been so long since I’ve controlled my Mach1 with the AP keypad, I don’t remember if that combination automatically changes tracking rate to match the object either.

Among my mounts, only my iOptron mounts automatically change tracking rates based on the object.  And again, I think that’s only if I use the iOptron HC to initiate the GOTO.  If I use SkySafari to initiate the GOTO on my iOptron mounts, I’m 99% sure the tracking rate doesn’t automatically change.

It would be nice to have this feature.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve forgotten to go into the mount settings of SkySafari to change to Lunar or Solar tracking rate.

Woody

APCC Pro Error Message

Emilio J. Robau, P.E.

Hello Ray,

I wanted to note that for about the last three months or so I have been receiving the following error upon triggering the ASCOM driver within APCC.

Run Time Error 91

Object variable or with Block Variable not set.

Error opening the AP V2 Ascom Driver

Can not create active X component

I do the software equivalent of giggling the gears, kicking the device, or just kicking the tire to get things going.   Sometimes it seems to work fine.  Others I have to exit and enter the program delete and recreate the virtual ports.   Not a catastrophic issue but it is annoying.  Do you know what might be happening here?

Thanks in advance for a response.

@Karen

Oh, my license is July 2020.

@Ray

Okay, thanks Ray. I will try it, as I use SGP.

Can I install this version in parallel to 1.9.0.11, i.e. have both installed, or do I need to delete 1.9.0.11 first

Thanks Rolando
Carbon based error strikes again.
Just to clarify. Going from NH to SH won't change the PE, but failing to click "Southern Hemisphere" and using Pempro will give an erroneous result

Re: APCC Pro Latest Beta Version

I would be open to that.  As a reminder, I mentioned in a discussion before Christmas that I have reverted back to an older version of APCC and the problem persists.  This version was not a problem before I installed and uninstalled the Beta.  Would I need to be in attendance all the time during their accessing it?

There will indeed be a difference. Different part of the gearwheel teeth are used for N versus S.

I should also point out that I forgot to click "Southern Hemisphere". I assume (maybe wrongly) that this would only matter when the mount was programmed to correct PE but would not affect the actual PE measurement

Re: Some information on uploaded Jim Phillips Sales Order 09-20-1989

W Hilmo

Before I bought my first Astro-Physics mount, we spent some time with a gentleman at a star party with a 6" F/12 Super Planetary on an AP1200.  The owner was kind enough to let us use it for a while, and he showed my wife how to use the keypad.  It was a really nice setup.

It also gave me a chance to show my wife where I wanted to go in terms of upgrading my mount.  It wasn't long after that, that I put my name in for an AP1200.  I got lucky in that the AP1600 was released before my name came up, so that's what I bought.  I couldn't be happier with it.

Fun times.

Hello guys

I just uploaded a one page PDF titled "Jim Phillips Sales Order 09-20-1989". Now, this wasn't Jim's order but was in with the catalogs he sent me to scan. From a historic standpoint it was very telling how the times have changed.

First, the old address of AP at the header of the order.

Second, how about the cost of that 5" f/8 OTA? I assume back then it was a lot of money when you look at what other scopes you could get at the time cost.

Also, you know that only took a phone call to get the order going. No wait list :)  My first AP was a 6" f/12 Super Planetary in the summer of 1991. I called AP and spoke to Marj {I believe} and I was good to go. Sent them a deposit.

Third, look how quick the estimated delivery was to be.

Fourth, note the order states a letter will be sent out when the final payment is due. Today an email at the speed of light notifies customers when their name comes up on the wait list and when final payment is due.

Fifth, "Freight and insurance charges will be billed C.O.D." The last time I ever did that was when I bought a Star Liner 12 1/2" f/5 reflector in the mid 1980's. [Am I allowed to use the word "reflector" in a refractor group :) ] I had to actually pick up the crates at the airport and pay for the shipping.

So, I thought it would be of interest to members of this group to see it.

Larry,

If the problem is Eltima, then this version does not fix the issue. Eltima has not provided a solution yet because they can't reproduce the problem. If your computer can be made available online and you are willing to let them have access to it, then maybe they will be able to find the cause of the issue on your computer.

Hi Marcello,

I am currently using APCC Pro 1.9.0.11 and would like to try the latest beta version (1.9.3.1a).
1.9.3.1a is actually a release build. You do NOT need to purchase an upgrade to use it.

That said, if you are using NINA, you would not want to use 1.9.3.1a until Dale releases the latest changes to his NINA plugin.

Do I need to purchase/upgrade to the latest version of APCC Pro to test the beta version? I don't want to
delete the current version and install the new one only to be surprised that I have to buy a new license.

I have no problem buying the new version, I just don't want to be rushed at night when starting the session.

Thank you,

Tonight is mount night since my AP 1600 started to have a dec axis seizing issue (probably gear mesh related) and I might as well install the beta version after I fix my seizing issue.
What is your seizing issue? Did you try to adjust the spur gear adjuster inside the gearbox?

Hello,
Apologize if this is redundant, but I can't seem to find the latest APCC Pro Beta Version.  Can someone tell me where to find it.  I did a search first but can't seem to find a specific post and I looked on the download page and can't seem to find it.   I know if it were a snake it would have bitten me.

Hopefully I will be able to read about the features somewhere.
