Hi,

My image of galaxy cluster Abell 1185 appears in an article on William and Caroline Herschel in the March 2022 edition of Sky & Telescope (pp 22-27, image on page 25). The image was taken through a C14 Edge on my AP900GTO mount.

Thank you Astro-Physics!

Re: ASCOM Driver "freezing"?

Progress? ...

1. I had plugged the cable into the wrong (bottom) serial port on the GTOCP3 instead of the top one. D'ohhhh. Fixed that.

2. Also, in Device Manager > Ports (COM & LPT) > Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM4) > Properties > Port Settings > Advanced, I noted that "Use FIFO buffers (requires 16550 compatible UART) was checked. I unchecked it and Saved.

Then I powered everything off, rebooted the laptop, re-powered the mount (and everything else), reconnected everything, and started a bit of a USB torture test of running my imaging cam and guide cam at their fastest exposure time and have them looping at their maximum frequency of capture-and-download. So far, haven't seen a single Communication Error (per the AP ASCOM panel), and it's been running like that for about three hours now.

Maybe these two things fixed it? (I was still getting errors before I did the second.)  Fingers crossed.

Anything else I should collect, capture, or inspect if it the "not responding" freeze happens again?

Hi Ray,

Thanks. I just received the trial registration key yesterday and the version I downloaded is: PRO - v1.9.3.1 - 12/26/2021.

I think for that you need not only the latest version of APCC Pro updated, but the subscription version. In
APCC go to Help > View/Update... there ASTAP is listed as a feature of that version.
Just to be clear, there is not a special "subscription version" of APCC. Everyone downloads the same version of APCC Pro or APCC Standard. It's just that your license's date must be August 1 2020, or later, to enable the use of ASTAP. Of course, you want to make sure you download the latest version of APCC from the Astro-Physics website.

If your license date is earlier than August 1 2020, you would have to purchase a license renewal (aka subscription) to enable the use of ASTAP. And the term "subscription" is not completely accurate in this case. APCC never expires, nor do the unlocked features ever expire. And even if you don't purchase a renewal, you can always download the latest version which may have new minor features and bug fixes, for free.

If you already have this version, Ray or someone else in AP can probably give you an answer.

Bear in mind it was a tape measure stuck through and hooked over the top of the azimuth adjustment.  I'd far more trust someone with a caliper.

But the main message I had was, if it's about clearance or something, it's not round -- the CP4 side has all sorts of stuff sticking out above and (with the CP4 bracket and CP4 mounted) below.

APPM and ASTAP

Hi,
I just installed APCC.  I was planning to use ASTAP for plate solving, but it does not appear in the dropdown menu in APPM.  I have ASTAP installed and working on my computer.  I checked and confirmed that I have the latest version of APCC, ASCOM, and ASTAP.  The Help file shows that ASTAP should show in the dropdown menu, but it doesn't appear in mine. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Hi Greg

I measured about 9.60 inches diameter with a certainty of + 0.005 inches on my 1100 mount using a spring caliper. If you need closer than that (to the nearest 0.001") I can make that measurement with my vernier calipers the next time I take my mount down. Probably in another week or so.

Linwood's measurement of about 9 inches makes me wonder if Astro-Physics has changed this dimension.

Ignore this note if you need precision.    It's about 9" or 9.125" as best I can tell.  I don't want to take it apart, and this is a tape measure suspended about an inch or so above the base to pass over the azimuth control in front, so the angle is misleading I think on the dimension, I think it is a bit over not under 9".

Real rough measurement, my caliper will not go nearly that large.

Assuming that's the dimension you mean.

Bear in mind on the other side there's a flat surface, so the azimuth controls (below showing only the left one) extend well over, but immediately above the ring.   There's also the mount for the CP4, that here I have extended out 1/4" or so for clearance and cables.    By default it is flat against the flat area on the ring.

Thank you all in advance.

Hi Tom,

It would be nice to just slew to a certain alt az coordinate to do the recalibrate at the start of a session.
APCC's Goto/Recal tab has a slew to Alt/Az position, which can be saved and later recalled. Also, the AP V2 ASCOM driver can do a similar action.

Is that what you need?

If it is any consolation, I paid a LOT more for a fancy, short, USB 2 A-B cable between my music server computer and my stereo DAC...

Thanks Linwood.  That was the problem.  Everything looks like it's working as expected now.

I'm on APCC 1.9.2.3 and Pegasus Astro Observing Conditions Driver 1.5 9 (kind of old maybe a newer one is out there) and Pegasus switchbox 2.3 software and I can see it, and it tests.  I tried it both through the hub and direct.

Are you sure you installed the ASCOM driver not (just) the powerbox software?   On the Pocket version (and I think others) it is two different installs.
