Re: Keypad 4.19 PROBLEM

Marj,

As I yesterday my 4.19 Keypad upgrade was successful and today I just tested the slew to objects a few minutes ago and I am seeing same slewing issues as others. It's not slewing to any objects after resuming from Park 1 or Park 4. NSEW directional buttons work.

Those that made the slew successful after resuming from pre-determined park positions, could you give us step by step procedure work around exactly what you did to make the slew successful after resuming from Park?

Thanks,
Peter

Check with George regarding how we got mine to work. I had to hit the keypad reset several times to get the Auto connect menu item to work after I finished the second firmware upgrade attempt. Once I verified the firmware worked (all park positions, able to reset my location data, set time etc) I went to the objects menu. For me the stars and planets worked but the Messier and NGC objects didn't. I just finished reloading the database and all seems to work fine for now. Will see if everything is stable over the next several days.
If there is anything I can do let me know.

Hi Marj,

The only thing I have changed after it didn't worked was that I setup the mount without using resume from last park. What I saw when the mount didn't worked and I had APCC connected was that the position (red point on the globe) showes the position of the "new target". After that, when I slew the lelescope to a park position it went wrong.

Wrong information?

In my particular case it’s not wrong information, it’s a fact.

I’m speaking about Parallels Desktop. I only have experience with Parallels Desktop, I can not speak about any other virtualization environment, but ZWO 120 ASI cameras  (USB 2) aren’t working with Parallels Desktop, try it out if you like. VMWare could be different for all I know.
But the problem here wasn’t about USB cameras, someone reported no joy with the firmware upgrade in VM, I just pointed the way to Bootcamp, where it works without a hiccup.

Re: Keypad 4.19 upload ok but doesn't slew

Don Anderson

That's what I had to do. I also had to reload the object database since it got corrupted somehow. I just finished that and all seems to be working. George said the only way the database can get corrupted is if there is a problem with the battery. I just replaced my about 7 months ago so I will see after the keypad sits off for a couple of days.
When you do another firmware upgrade make sure you delete the old upgrade tool from your computer (control panel/add-remove programs) then download a fresh version. If you use the original, you could simply be reloading a corrupt version. That was George's recommendation If you are still having problems after that, give George a call. Let me know how you make out.
Cheers

Is it worth trying or should I grab my wife's PC to do the upgrade? I was able to successfully run the polar align wizard in PemPro v3 beta using The Sky X on Sunday evening. No issues.

Rich,

I’ve just completed the firmware upgrade to version 4.19 on my Macbook Pro without any issues at all using Windows 10 Pro on a Bootcamp partition (No Virtualisation). I further used a Prolific chipset based USB to Serial device from “Plugable”, even though I have a Keyspan adapter, because I never had any issues with this adapter so far. Didn’t encounter any problems.

So a Mac can be used after all, just not with Windows in a virtual machine.

I was following the instructions for the keypad update and after verifying that the mount chip was ok, I did the "3-finger salute" to get the keypad in the state to receive data.  Then when I went back to the update program, and hit "Continue" the program said that the port was busy and would then error out.

I've tried the procedure 3 times and the first part works fine (i.e. connecting to the mount, verifying the chipset) but when I get to the upgrade the keypad it always dies with a "port in use" error.

Now, I am doing this from a Windows 8 virtual machine running on my Mac.  But I don't have anything else running on either the Mac or the Windows side. In the past I've been able to run ASCOM, PEMPro and MaximDL without any issues.  So I don't think there's not enough cycles on the VM's side to run the update.  However, I could be wrong.  Unfortunately I don't have any access to a real Windows machine to do this update if running the updater in a VM doesn't work. And Yes, I'm using a Keyspan USB-Serial adapter I bought from AP ages ago...

Any suggestions?

Rich

Hi Andrew again,

Eagle pier allows you to configure in several different ways. The pictures of my Eagle pier made it look like it has Extension but I lowered the legs (or "raised" the pier part) so that when the mount crosses the Meridian, the scope/camera does not hit the legs. Also, I believe my configuration is the most stable setup.

The upgrade went just fine (fw and installer downloaded in the last hour - ftdi converter used as usual through the stock serial cable - AP1100 cp3 V1 - steps from 1 to 10 done as described) I entered the time(really it was on time no matter the reset) and location, however after power cycling the mount, starting from park4 (I tried park1 as well) I tried going to Aldebaran, but the mount doesn't slew. Tried other stars and dso. The keypad does show the correct object RA and DEC. I tried power cycling again and each time I get the same issue. I've just done a re-load with a fresh firmware. Same problem.

I deleted the old updater, downloaded and installed the Ver 4.19 with a refreshed downloader. The new update went ok except that because of the previous corrupt update, I couldn't set the keypad in "Autoconnect No" That function in the keypad menu was frozen. With Georges help, I went ahead with update and was able to get the new firmware up & running. However, my object database looks like it is corrupt. The stars and planets seem to work but the Messier and NGC data does not. Selecting objects in those gives the message "belows the horizon" (objects selected definitely were not) or it sends the mount way off base. Oh well looks like more work to do

I downloaded and completed the upgrade to Ver 4.19. The upgrade went as per the instructions however something must have been corrupted during the process although all of the pop up windows and screens were as per instructions. I went ahead and entered the new time and location data as per the manual. That seemed to go ok however after power cycling the mount I tried going to a database object but the keypad never slewed the mount it simply displayed some garbled numbers and letter that flickered on the screen. I tried the park positions buth the keypad sent the mount to weird places. I tried power cycling again and each time I do I get different screens. I will call in the morning to discuss with Howard or George. There is definitely something wrong somewhere.

Martin,
Although I haven't done extensive testing, I ran my Robofocus, Apogee U16M, SBIG ST402, and the AP1200GTO through VMWare on Win 10 without any problems for a couple of nights now. That won't be my final setup, I will ultimately run a PC again, I'm just testing everything on Win 10. Next I will try an unattended run using CCDAutopilot with The Sky X.

Marj,

glad to contribute.

A Mac on Bootcamp behaves exactly like a normal PC. Not so, if operated through any sort of virtual machine. It’s ok for non critical tasks (I have Parallels Desktop, latest version on Mac OS El Capitan running Windows 10. I’m able to run Skytools 3 Pro and Pempro without issues, the problems start when I try to connect additional hardware though, like USB cameras (I have a ZWO ASI, but I’m unable to have it perform satisfactorily, because Mac OS, being the host operating system, doesn’t work well with them, no Mac drivers).
So, for low level tasks, like a firmware upgrade, it’s my belief that only a Bootcamp installation will work to satisfaction. It did in my case.

Martin

Martin

Rich,

It has always been a rule of thumb that all firmware upgrades to the keypad must be done on a PC and not a Mac with a virtual machine.   I do not know the computer tech reasons for this.   We have always recommended that if you have a Mac, then you need to find a friend with a PC to do the update.

By the way, I use Fusion on my Mac at home, but I went to the dark side and bought a cheap PC for my astronomy computer and life has become easier.

Subject: [ap-gto] Keypad 4.19 update fails after "3-finger salute"

Rich

Hi,

I also had a prblem after updating. I found that the mount sets the position - I can see, if I connected also to APCC - but the mount didn’t slew to the position. After a while and new connections it works for me. I don’t know what happened but it works now.

You might try using a fresh download from our website just in case there was a problem with your original download.

Ok. I was just going to call you to discuss. I will try that. I am using a single port Keyspan that has worked well since I got it in 2009. I will try a reload and let you know how I make out.
Hears hoping!

Don,

Do a re-load of the firmware and see if that fixes the problem.
