Hi Todd;
It is a very nice concept but I find that the difficulty in it's use is one of
setup. The mike alone without the computer screen within sight is a difficult task
until one learns the program front and back. Also without the screen nearby on
does not know the suggested objects that the program will yield unless one just
wishes to say "next" AND THEN WHATEVER COMES UP IS THE OBJECT TO BE VIEWED. The
fun part of the program is the IDENTIFY....however, at times I doubted it's
accuracy.
Also I added external speakers to my laptop(cost about $20.00) for with all the
noise from the outside the laptop speakers were just not loud enough...another
setup problem.
For me and just speaking for me the right setup is one of a semi permenent
nature..that is having a pier which you know I do use and setting up the computer
some 15 feet away yet still within a reasonable sight range and using the mike
under those type of conditions.
The truth of the matter is I now use the program to get and setup on hard copy a
observing program for the evening and use exclusively the keypad which BTW I
really enjoy the best.

Hi all,

I posted new images with the AP600 mount at my site

including M16 and NGC 4565. Skies were unusually dark here last night
in the 'burbs, about mag 4.5 or maybe a little better.

During the evening I did one track-and-accumulate image. Here are
the offsets, in arcsec. The object was NGC 4565. The exposures were
30 sec. each.

Dec drift is pretty steady, but I am getting a range of up to +/-10 sec. in
RA. Some of the movement in RA could be drift due to polar alignment,
I guess, but there's a good bit of back-and-forth too.

Ok, here is a question for the group. I just ordered a 10" Meade SCT OTA and the proper AP mounting plates . I plan on using the 600 GTO mount with this scope.
Now will I have a problem or is there anything I should be aware of when going thru the polar alignment process????
Also someone in the group uses a C11 and a C 9.25 with the AP mount...any problems that are different when you use your refractors.????

I'd be interested, also. I haven't tried my C-11 on the mount yet (Losmandy
plates), but will post a note when I have done so. We lost two critical
employees at work, so I probably won't have time to mess with it until after
July 12.

Same problem may not be able to try out till late August. AP far behind on dovetail plates both male and female....anyone with experience would be helpful. I think Todd maybe the only one who uses a 9.25 SCT and an other gentlemen in the group uses a C11 but his name skips my memeory....any polar alignment problems or balancing problems, Todd????????

Try http://tiger.census.gov/cgi-bin/mapbrowse-tbl/ It takes a little
drilling down to get your info.

I use the personal mapping program Streets 2000--lat and long coordinates
display for the cursor position, quick and easy.

If you have TheSky, under site information you'll find the long and lat of
your city (if it is one of those listed), but no more accurate than that.
However, that's probably close enough.

If you align your GTO mount as I do, by picking alignment stars from a star
map, a list ordered by constellation rather than by stars in alphabetical
order makes selecting alignment stars much easier.

This email includes such a list. If there are any errors, please let me know.

The list of AP GTO alignment stars in text form follows, sorted by
constellation. Within constellations, the stars are in Greek alphabetical
order. Stars without Greek letter designations follow those with. All four
AP entries are included: designation/constellation, star name, abbreviation,
magnitude. On each line, tabs separate the entries, although that isn't
immediately obvious from the formatting of the text in the email. To properly
format the list into aligned columns, after pasting the text into a new
document, clear all tab settings in your word processing program and reset
them at a spacing that will create aligned columns, e.g. 3", 4", 5".

AP GTO users,

This is a repost of a pre-egroups message. In it, I concurred with Howard
Lazarus' supposition that stars on the meridian (due South) were useful
alignment stars. The post also covered a second topic, mount leveling.
Since that part was incorrect, I'll cover the subject in a separate post.

Stars located on or very near the meridian (due South) are very valuable for
polar alignment. The reason is that when the mount is pointed to the
meridian, turning the mount's altitude (latitude) adjuster translates into a
purely vertical alignment star motion in the eyepiece. As the mount is moved
to the east or west, a horizontal component is introduced into the movement
of the alignment star when the altitude adjuster is turned. By the time the
mount is laid all the way over to the east or west, turning the mount's
altitude adjuster results in a nearly horizontal movement of the alignment
star in the eyepiece field. Since the mount's azimuth adjuster always
produces a horizontal movement no matter where the mount is pointed, this can
lead to confusion and a seeming inability to bring the mount to proper
alignment. I think your conclusion that the altitude adjustment should be
made first may be based on this characteristic.

[Note that this last point, altitude adjustment first, is in keeping with
Roland Christen's recommended method, which involves an overhead star and
resetting of the time to cause the scope to slew to the opposite side of the
mount. M.]

I have used the C11 on the AP600 for long exposure self-guided images
with the ST7 camera. For this I used the DC11 mounting plate and AP
DOVELM, which accepts the DC11. No problems, but the mount required
three 9 lb. counter weights to balance in RA. The dovetail arrangement
allows you to slide the OTA forward as much as you want to achieve
balance in DEC.

Comparison image of M51 with 6" AP vs. C11, both mounted on the AP600

Hi Bob;
Many thanks for the reply. The Meade being lighter than the C 11 I am hoping that I can get away without using the additional weight. It seems you are stating that there is little of no difference in the Polar Aignment process and that the mount with the C11 on will continue to center its tarket objectsd fairly well.
I too will have the Dovelm and the DC 10 from Losmandy as per AP instructions to me. They felt that additional weights would npt be required...hope they are right.

Derek, I don't have an AP scope, only the 1200 mount. But I would be glad
to
have posts about AP equipment......I would like to know all I could about
their
stuff; especially the refractors.

I think this group is fine as it is--low volume and small. However, it
occurred to me that possibly everyone on this list except me has an AP
scope.

I would like to hear from you guys about expanding the group to include
discussions of AP equipment in general--in other words, creating an AP
mailing list similar to the Meade and Celestron groups.

I think this group is fine as it is--low volume and small. However, it
occurred to me that possibly everyone on this list except me has an AP
scope.

I would like to hear from you guys about expanding the group to include
discussions of AP equipment in general--in other words, creating an AP
mailing list similar to the Meade and Celestron groups.

You can e-mail me your opinions, or we can discuss this on the group.

I want to announce the group on s.a.a. and put a link to it on the AP
website, but obviously we would have to make this major decision first.

Hi Derek;
I too have noted that some in the group have other than AP scopes and some
have both refractors and SCT's. However, the AP GTO systems are evolving all
the time. We still have to see what the new program for the keypad will
bring and the chip for the computer so that we can download from the AP web
site.
I think there is enough to talk about just with the AP mounts,however, it
would be of interest to see how the mount is employed when using different
scopes and what mountings are required, what alignment problems may occur,is
tracking effected depending on the scope used etc.
In other words...in short...expand if you wish...it could be fun.
