I would balance the mount with the gears released. Well balanced I think it should handle it. I use weights on the OTA for perfect balance.

Gert, The only thing I can think could be happening is the driver's setting file is locked or corrupted or otherwise not writeable. With the driver not running, delete this file to fix that:

Are you committed to the finders? As an imager, I dropped my finders some time ago. You might be able to drop a few pounds if it's close.
