Idon't think cables get any more "robust" than A-P cables. You are screwingit down after inserting it -- correct?
Butyes, it's a standard threaded DC connector. I believe it's 5.5mm

Look closely at 12V connector on CP3 and you will notice the pin is split into two halves. Very carefully insert a small blade screwdriver in between the two halves of the pin and slowly twist the pin

I think some awesome improvements for AP owners would happen to Sky Safari very quickly if AP were to give the two programmers a Mach1 each in exchange for the programming work to fully support

Actually it works as far as I have been able to test it so far. However I can see potential limitations that could be problems when changing locations.
Also, Sky Safari does not offer any AP Park
