Re: Maximum SAFE shimming thickness under a DOVELM162 clamp set ?
Hi Jimmy,
You use Rolando’s “visual method” of polar alignment, which is excellent for a portable system, while in my fixed setup, Ialways use computerized CCD methods – PemPro Polar

Aligning for zero Dec drift goes back to the days of single axis drive mounts (mounts that had no Dec motors). With this alignment you could reduce or eliminate your Dec drift and concentrate on

Is it better to align for less dec drift or to align for pointing closer to the (refracted? actual?) pole? Dec drift can be easily guided out since it's smooth and always in the same direction, so it

Excellent! Who says you need a web cam and thousands of images to get a great lunar image?

Moon in Ha
I was imaging the Crescent in Ha with an almost full Moon and had to get some shots of it before I stopped imaging for the night.

It's very simple, you have a 4 arc minute error in the altitude axis, otherwise known as polar misalignment. That is of course due to your drift alignment method which does not result in the polar

Re: Maximum SAFE shimming thickness under a DOVELM162 clamp set ?
Shimming RA has no affect on Dec.
Sounds like flexure, Dec backlash or polar alignment
That's the way I polar align Dec.
Center any star on meridian
Recal
Meridian Flip back to same star.
Press North

If there is a DEC error when flipping the meridian, I would suspectmechanical flexure someplace in the optical axis.

Hi,
Just a follow up on the mostly successful shimmingprocess on my RCOS RC-14 truss.
Originally, the star was completely offthe CCD frame after a meridian flip. I inserted a 1/4” wide x

Re: Arizona Science and Astronomy Expo (ASAE)
I haven't posted lately (probably 'cause I haven't had any problems with my AP1200 in years) but I'll be there for both SWAP and ASAE!
I'll be sure and stop by. I don't know if you will remember,

Re: Curious issue with guide calibration using PHD
That happened to me once. It turned out it was a setting in PHD. I had forgotten to put "on camera" as the mount setting.
