While I'm here posting, here is one I put up yesterday and welcome suggestions and criticism.

All credit to the AP1100AE for the round stars of course.

I love getting data across all filters, it shows so much hidden detail viewed separately; I absolutely HATE trying to turn it into images. Picking colors, blending colors just drives me insane.  After a while I become a sort of color blind zombie just trying pallets at random.  This was after taking a day off and changing approaches. 

There is about 18 hours of data at 2800mm/F10 through all 7 filters (no luminance).  The stars are RGB only, the red on the bright part of the nebula comes mostly from the RGB (blended after stretching with square of value), and the halo and blue/cyan mostly from the NB colors, which were combined in a ForaxX type formula.  I first tried blending Red + Sii, Green + Ha, etc. but that did not work well, so I built the BB and NB images separately and combined.  I'm still not happy with the powder blue color but making it darker or more saturated just seemed to make it worse.   I'm even more unhappy with the dark part of the background which is blotchy from combing narrow and broad band backgrounds, but attempts to fix it made star replacement look even more strange. 

As I said, criticism and suggestions more than welcome, here or on Astrobin.

It is Dow Corning High Vacuum Grease. 

Silicone Base and rated for -40C to 204C degrees.

I remember reading something from Roland about avoiding sulfur, and I dont see that this contains any.

All boards in the AP mounts are already conformal coated. Do not add more willy nilly since you can mess up the connector pins!

Thanks for the help.  I had never needed to set a delay before, but with this system, it appears to be necessary.  Worked fine for three nights in a row.  First wide-field image using the Mach2.  Result here.

Yan,

You will need to contact the ASCOM group for help with Alpaca usage. The AP V2 ASCOM driver knows nothing about Alpaca.

However, earlier firmware versions of the control box may limit the button rate to 99.999x even though the slew rate can be set to 600x. There is no provision for specifying these separate limits in ASCOM.

I noticed on the data sheet that this grease is not recommended "As a lubricant in metal bearings"

I emailed Daleen instead to place an order for the AP special grease. 

Also, when I took DEC apart last night I found that one of the little clutch plug tips was crack and wedged in the last threads.  I had to really force it out, so I kind of doubt it was doing much other than just being stuck. 

On another note, I love the simplicity of this mount design.  I've rebuilt Orion Atlas mounts before when I hypertuned them and this 400GTO is so much better internally.  The quality of the components and machining as well as the decisions for how to put it all together are so well thought out.  As Roland said this is a 30 year old design! 

The good news is that the grease looked old, black and tired and I think a full service is in store.  I suspect that most of my challenges with this new to me mount are likely service related.

Hello everyone,

here is the first image with my AP900 that I got few weeks ago. There's absolutely nothing to say about the mount, it just works. Flawlessly from the first to the last sub.  The scope is a custom-made carbon 8" f/4 Newtonian astrograph with Romano Zen optics and a 2.5" Wynne corrector. The camera is an ASI183mm with small 2.4µm pixels.

Here is a crop on the nebula and neighbor galaxy, enlarged at 125%

Did some model testing and grabbed 3.5 hours of Sadr in HA. Epsilon E160ED scope, AP Mach 2 mount, unguided subs of 5 mins. Camera is the QHY600 full frame CMOS. Filter was the Astronomik MaxFR 6nm. 



Pretty neat data, and massively wide field. The combo is coming along nicely.

Honestly, there is an easy solution for this. Most equipment listings are just variations of the same thing. He should have been able to mass migrate all the obvious stuff, and leave users to sort only the things that were less obvious. This would make it easier on everyone, and would get you a faster migration process.

Conformal coatings are good for boards that aren't already contaminated. Not so good for already-contaminated boards. There are ways to clean contaminated boards to stabilize them, dry them and then coat them.

I use Marine connector silicon grease, a.k.a. O-ring grease in just about all electrical connectors. Displaces air, humidity and whatever else might be carried around in the air, like salt.

Raw and burned diesel fumes can be rather corrosive too. Keep fumes from diesel fuel cans/barrels and diesel engine/generator exhaust well away from your precious observatory and anything else you care about.

I only use stainless steel fasteners everywhere in all observatories and equipment, regardless of proximity to salt air.

To prevent galling and damaged/broken parts, always add a small drop of oil to stainless and aluminum threads before putting things together. 

I only use stainless wood screws in observatories with wood components. I never use nails whenever they can be avoided. Observatories are not static structures, they are dynamic machines with moving parts. Nails are just about always completely unsuitable for machines. When using nails, everything works loose over time.

I recommend using fiber optic communications wherever possible. Minimize damage due to ESD, GPR, RFI, etc. My preference is for 50 micron multimode. It is more tolerant of dirty connectors and such versus single-mode fibers. 

All USB connectors suck and are unreliable. Currently USB-C is the least horrible USB connector. USB-A is the most horrible. Just FYI.

Keep all copper conductor cables in an observatory as short as possible. I put NUC's on OTA's and control them remotely. 

I use big SSD drives in all observatory computers. Especially above about 2.5 km elevation. Mechanical drives have air cushion bearings that keep the heads near but not touching the spinning discs. Thin air is dangerous for them.

Never let any cable run openly across a floor. Copper conductor cables will be at greater risk from ESD & GPR. Fiber cables will be at risk of damage from being stepped on. Also a tripping hazard.

Leaving USB/Ethernet/etc. cables with one end unconnected laying on or near a floor in dry, static-prone climates is almost guaranteeing getting a USB/Ethernet/etc. port blown out by ESD.

I'm also annoyed by the revision selection.  If you click on a revision it opens it up in a popup window.  I'm sure all these issues will sort out and in the long run it will be a better product, but for now I just hate it when places go and change things that are already working and make them worse.  Abin's equipment database has been very poor for so many years, that it takes a lot of fixing to sort it out as there are years of inputs that have been done in a poor way. 

Every time I go to buy a pair of shoes just like the pair I wore out they've been discontinued or changed and I have to start over to find a pair that makes my feet happy.  There should be a law against this...
