Another vote of confidence for the 900GTO.  Mine is from 2009 and performs brilliantly. I've got 61 pounds on it with a side by side setup.   I'm also using apcc pro, which I couldn't live without now.

I recently updated my pempro curve and found that the mount's native periodic error was under 4 arc seconds peak to peak.  After PEC, periodic error dropped to 0.2".

Hi,

My image of galaxy cluster Abell 1185 appears in an article on William and Caroline Herschel in the March 2022 edition of Sky & Telescope (pp 22-27, image on page 25). The image was taken through a C14 Edge on my AP900GTO mount.

Thank you Astro-Physics!

Re: ASCOM Driver "freezing"?

Thanks everyone. I probably clicked on the wrong thing by the time I added it to the cart. I do have an FTDI
based cable (as confirmed by Device Manager and the installed driver) and experienced the same problem,
but it wasn't the AP cable. Will get the AP one when it's back in stock. Is it really only 10cm long? Do you
plug that into an active USB extension cable or a powered hub to get the required distance to the rest of your
stuff?
It is better to connect the USB/serial converter directly to a USB port on your computer and run a Male-Female DB9 cable of the needed length from the converter to the mount.

The DB9 cable can be much longer (100+ feet), and, of course, you won't need a USB extender!

Hi,

This improved Guiding and pointing accuracy.

However, the temperature was so cold that the mount was squealing - see video.   I had max slew speed set to 900.  I can understand the motors making more noise as they work to overcome higher viscosity.  But there is also a sound which appears to be some form
of resonance - I wonder if the worm mesh is too tight.   I had a similar sound on an IOPTRON mount which I resolved by loosening the gears-worm tightness.

Any advice on whether I need to do anything would be appreciated (I realize that this is very cold and would require different grease etc)

thanks

Be careful of cheap Amazon usb to serial. Some say they are ftdi but aren't.
Avoid garbage and buy from astro-physics or get a tripplite one.

I'll definitely second that! I've had multiple issues with several Prolific USB/serial devices over the years (astronomy and ham radio), and all the problems disappeared immediately after I replaced the devices with FTDI dongles and installed the official FTDI drivers.

In your first post you say you have an ftdi chipset but here you are modifying a prolific driver. Get a real ftdi usb to Seri port. Prolific ports can be problematic. Also, setting nothing in the control panel will do nothing. It's application based.

Re: ASCOM Driver "freezing"?

Progress? ...

1. I had plugged the cable into the wrong (bottom) serial port on the GTOCP3 instead of the top one. D'ohhhh. Fixed that.

2. Also, in Device Manager > Ports (COM & LPT) > Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM4) > Properties > Port Settings > Advanced, I noted that "Use FIFO buffers (requires 16550 compatible UART) was checked. I unchecked it and Saved.

Then I powered everything off, rebooted the laptop, re-powered the mount (and everything else), reconnected everything, and started a bit of a USB torture test of running my imaging cam and guide cam at their fastest exposure time and have them looping at their maximum frequency of capture-and-download. So far, haven't seen a single Communication Error (per the AP ASCOM panel), and it's been running like that for about three hours now.

Maybe these two things fixed it? (I was still getting errors before I did the second.)  Fingers crossed.

Anything else I should collect, capture, or inspect if it the "not responding" freeze happens again?

Hi Ray,

Thanks. I just received the trial registration key yesterday and the version I downloaded is: PRO - v1.9.3.1 - 12/26/2021.

Re: APPM and ASTAP

I think for that you need not only the latest version of APCC Pro updated, but the subscription version. In
APCC go to Help > View/Update... there ASTAP is listed as a feature of that version.
Just to be clear, there is not a special "subscription version" of APCC. Everyone downloads the same version of APCC Pro or APCC Standard. It's just that your license's date must be August 1 2020, or later, to enable the use of ASTAP. Of course, you want to make sure you download the latest version of APCC from the Astro-Physics website.

If your license date is earlier than August 1 2020, you would have to purchase a license renewal (aka subscription) to enable the use of ASTAP. And the term "subscription" is not completely accurate in this case. APCC never expires, nor do the unlocked features ever expire. And even if you don't purchase a renewal, you can always download the latest version which may have new minor features and bug fixes, for free.

If you already have this version, Ray or someone else in AP can probably give you an answer.
