"I have recently been getting error messages from the Mach2 while under automated unguided imaging regarding an "encoder error" or as in the case of the attached, "motor stall".  While I am not too concerned about getting the errors as none of them seems to affect the quality of my images,"

Larry, are your clutch knobs tight?    I found that I could not make them tight enough by hand when I have a bigger optical tube on the mount and need to use an allen wrench to lock them down just a smidge.    E.G. if the controller tells the mount to move and it doesn't move as much as the controller says, as measured by encoders, then you'll get this kind of warning.    I got these the first night I used the mach2, and since then always tighten the clutches just a little bit more than I can by finder and never see the issue again.

Just a though, may or may not be your issue.

Larry,

If you deleted the APCC settings file, that would remove the default of saving the window positions.

Both the beta and the last release version use EXACTLY the same code to launch the error log window, so there is virtually no chance that there is something in the beta that prevents the window from being opened. The only difference is that the error log window is now being forced to the top in the beta.

And, BTW, changes in the beta have been well tested, so it is safe to use. Before creating a general release build, I need to update the help in a few places and check with Dale that the API changes for NINA are working to his satisfaction.

Ray, I will reinstall the beta and try your suggestion. But if it is not enabled in the previous version, could it
somehow be enabled in the beta?

Hi Larry,

I could not check the window position setting in the beta because I could not see the APCC window. Is there
another way to see it?
Yes, from Windows, start APCC. Immediately after starting APCC, press and hold down your keyboard's CTRL key until you see APCC's window.

Pressing the CTRL key overrides APCC's last window position, if you had that setting enabled.

another way to see it? I did check it in v1.9.0.11 after I reinstalled it and it was not checked. BTW, if it makes
any difference, this is a Win 7 computer. Also, should any of this troubleshooting be done with the mount
connected to the computer? I have been doing this in the house with the mount offline? And now that I have
the older version installed, would it be worthwhile to reinstall the beta?

Hello Peter,

Difficult choice ;-)

Both versions have their pro and cons. The second version increases the contrast of the dust lanes close to the galaxy core. Still, I think I prefer the original version because it is more realistic. It captures the luminosity and size of the central core while preserving a good visibility of the dust lanes.

This being said, both version are excellent !

Thank you Christian and Rolando.

I have processed M31 two different ways. The original is minimal processing. The second one is same as minimal processing plus increase contrast and tame the core of M31.

Blink between the first 2 images at higher resolution at:

https://peternagy.smugmug.com/Telescopes/Galaxies/i-5Vpm6ps/A

Click on right and then left arrows back and forth to blink both images.

Which one do you like better?

Attached image is the 2nd processing.

Thanks again.

I went back to v1.9.0.11 and now APCC works. Something about the beta that my computer does not like.
Larry, sorry, but I don't believe there is anything wrong with the beta or your computer. :-)

Did you check the APCC setting for saving the window positions? That was almost certainly the problem.

Before I delete APCC and reinstall, will I lose my APPM pointing model.
Reinstalling APCC will not help as no settings are deleted.

To reset APCC delete the file c:\ProgramData\Astro-Physics\APCC\Settings.apcc

Larry,

If you have the menu Settings->Save Window Positions enabled, turn it off. If this is enabled, the window position could have been saved off the screen or even minimized.

Thanks for the reply, Jerry.  I'd have to agree that A-P mounts are simply the best in just "getting out of the way".  Never a problem.  They just work and work and work.

Fortunately I live in a Bortle 4 zone, though unfortunately the future looks "brighter".  We're all seeing the results of encroachment and are learning new tricks to cope.

Have a great week ahead, and thanks again.

I have had occasions where the APCC error message page appears minimized below the task bar. I just right click it in the minimized state to close it. I then select View Error Messages in APCC and the page appears on the desktop where I can read error messages, delete them and then close the screen.

A new piece of info.  If the APPC task bar icon is active, and I press enter the Quick Access Controls dialog appears.  If I press enter again, the Terminal Interface opens.  Nothing else after that.
BRTW, all of this is while offline from the mount.

No Joy again.  It appears that the window is behind the desktop, if that is even possible.  When I click on the task bar icon to minimize it, for a brief moment it is now appearing in the middle of the screen.

Re: Mach2 Error Messages

On the task bar try this: hold the shift key down and right click.   If Move is available, select it and do not touch the mouse afterwards (yet).   If Move is not available but Restore is select it, the start over with a shift right click.  The object is to get Move available and select it and then do not move the mouse.

Now touch the right or left arrow on the keyboard.  When you do, the mouse pointer is bound to the window whose icon you used (even of off screen).   Now move the mouse (do not click) until the window shows up and you can drag it wherever you want, click to release.

Re: Mach2 Error Messages

That's a bummer Larry

Do you get the move cursor to show up? (the four way arrows). If so, you might try moving around your cursor a lot just to see if you can get it back onto your display.

who knows how far off or in what direction it is
