Sudden run-away during imaging run #APCC #Guiding

I was imaging this evening and suddenly the stars started streaking across the image (after about 2 hours running fine).  It wasn't a fast slew and I watched it continue across several images (150s exposures) before I stopped it.  I wasn't anywhere near limits in the axis positions.   The software configuration is  NINA->PHD2->AP ASCOM->APCC.   I am connected via USB (short) to the AP1100 control box.   I have the PHD and APCC logs.   How do I go about debugging this? I certainly don't want it to happen when I'm not watching the session.

I also get occasional Error Reading RA encoder or Error Reading Dec encoder.  It seemed to start after I had an issue fixed with the control box several months ago.     I figured out how to get to the error window by closing it from the task bar and then reopening.  Still happens on the order of once every two imaging sessions.

      Here is an image with the results from accessing the mount with APCC to get the list of values requested,
hopefully you have previously solved the issue.

I have a C14 with HyperStar and Mirror less Canon RP.

I had a problem like that with my C14 when I first got it (used). It turned out that the mirror had come loose from the mount. Mirror flop was nearly a degree. I would center something near the meridian, center the finder on it, then flip to the other side of the meridian, and when it was centered, it would be nearly out of view in the finder. I had it on a G11 at the time, and it took dozens of points to build a model, which had some very strange terms, and never pointed accurately. Collimating was also only good in the area of the sky where it was originally done.

Normal mirror flop, now that it’s fixed, is under an arc minute.

Hi Peter,

You have two choices:

1. Uncheck the box in the driver that says "Expand window to show all contents". You check the box to expand, and uncheck to restore. At least this was the intended behavior!

2. Given people seem to complain about the checkbox not being obvious enough, the beta version 5.40.00 changes the behavior:

TSX and APCC play well together. No issues.  However, TSX is a beast and for simple pointing I prefer SkySafari Pro. What's nice is that I can set it up on my phone and thus move the mount around however I want, and even adjust pointing sitting in my house 800 feet away.

Maxim is not being run as administrator in my case. However, the MaximDL - ASCOM connection in this case is another instance where Maxim is not working as it should. It used to work in the past but for some reason does not any more.

If MaximDL is being run "as administrator" in your first case, it can use a different COM port than when run as a regular user. That's because there can be two separate ASCOM driver instances running simultaneously (administrator and regular user). The administrator and user instances of the ASCOM driver have separately configurable COM port numbers.  The driver will not be able to connect if the administrator driver instance is using the wrong COM port, or if the COM port is already in use by the regular user instance of the ASCOM driver.

It seems like The Sky X is that platform but I cannot get it to connect to the mount. 
SkyX connects to the mount via the ASCOM driver. You need to set SkyX up to connect to ASCOM mount. Make sure that the ASCOM driver is connected to an appropriate COM port. Use the computer's Device Manager to find the available com port and set up the ASCOM driver to connect to that com port.

Is there any type of workflow or tutorial which walks someone through this process? I thought I would ask here before calling in.

Another thing you can try: if you have a planetarium program, if this happens again, try invoking a slew from the planetarium program to see if the driver is stuck or MaximDL.
You can slew from a planetarium program and Maxim is NOT stuck. It's only if you slew with Maxim. It has nothing to do with matching coordinate targets. A simple button push slew in Maxim causes the same problem.

If the driver and APCC indicated the mount status as normal, this points to a possible MaximDL issue. It might be that MaximDL is looking to match the target J2000 coordinates, and they were slightly different. The mount only uses local apparent (aka JNow).

The folks at Diffraction Limited say that this is not a MaxIm problem. Roland's comment suggests that it is not an APCC problem because he experienced the same kind of problems when running from just the ASCOM Driver.

I am going to try to set everything up indoors later today to see if I can reproduce the problem. However, I can describe as best as I can remember the steps and observations that I made when this happened. I have a few screen shots.
  1. Connected the camera USB cables and ethernet cable from the mount to my laptop
  2. Powered up the mount
  3. Launched APCC and connected to the mount (using ethernet cable peer to peer) - successful connection
  4. Connected to the AP-V2 Driver - successful connection
  5. Checked virtual port from ASCOM V2 Telescope Driver - Got the Mount found message
  6. Launched MaxIm DL. Connected to the cameras and started cooling
  7. Opened the Observatory Control in MaxIm DL and connected to the telescope (Astro-Physics GTO V2 Mount) - successful
  8. Opened the Catalog tab in the MaxIm Observatory Control window and searched for M57. Clicked on GoTo button and the mount slewed to M57.
  9. Searched in the Catalog tab for Vega. At this time the GoTo button was greyed out. The Telescope status indicated that MaxIm thought that the mount was still slewing when in fact it was in the normal tracking mode (see screen shots below from the other night).
  10. Note that the Mount status in APCC and the AP-V2 Telescope Driver looked OK
  11. I disconnected the mount from MaxIm (with dificulty since MaxIM thought the mount was still moving) and reconnected it. The mount status in MaxIm appeared to be normal (in the tracking mode). From APCC I then parked the mount. There is a screen shot below that shows the status in MaxIm after the mount was parked.

It is NOT a problem with APCC! It does the same with APCC out of the loop. Maxim is not picking up the ASCOM driver status after a slew. It's as simple as that. Why it doesn't is a mystery.

I can vouch for that - Roland helped us with these settings on our CDK20 which is nearly 200lb on our AP1600. A few software tweaks improved performance considerably

I don't have an AP mount (on the waiting list for a Mach2), but this sounds very similar to the SDE generated oscillation that has plagued Ioptron's attempt at encoder equipped mounts.  The threads on their issue with this on CN are so numerous that it really deserves its own group... ;-)
Is that any relation to what is occurring here?
"Sub-divisional error is cyclic, occurring with each interval of the scale or scanning pitch (i.e with each signal period), but it does not accumulate and is independent of the scale or travel length. The two primary causes of SDE are mechanical inaccuracies and misalignment between the scale and the read head, although harmonic disturbances can also cause distortions in the sine and cosine signal"

Configure TSX to use an ASCOM driver to connect to a mount, and select the Astro Physics V2 ASCOM driver as the driver for it to use.

Can you provide the exact steps you used to produce this problem? You could even do this in the day if you wanted.

And if you can reproduce it, please use the APCC Log zipper and include both APCC and ASCOM logs in the zip file.
