    For your link to Linak disti’s – I was quite pleasantly surprised to find that LINAK-Canada was so handy, only a couple of miles away from me in Toronto.
 
    One thing that concerns me is the operating temperature range, and outdoor climate. Those are Spring/Fall ambient temperatures around here.  The LINAK is meant for “medical facilities or office areas”, and might be a problem outdoors, if it needed to be operated unexpectedly, on a cold northern winter day. I suppose, no problem in Hawaii.
Perhaps, once we have the scope height calibrated, the automation just lifts quickly, so in rare use this doesn’t become a significant issue.
Usage:
• Single drive or parallel drive
• Duty cycle: max. 5 %, max. 1 minute continuous use followed by 19 minutes pause
• Ambient temperature: 5 to 40 °C • Storage and transport temperature: -20 to +70 °C
    Likewise, the Duty cycle means that there is no “playing around” trying to find an ideal scope elevation, or the exercise may take hours, just in wait time. Is this the same with PIERTECH’s lifters?
 
    Anyway, an interesting product I will think about.

When I purchased the original pair of lifting columns from Linak, I was over the engineering department of the local public works department in New Orleans and we did a lot of custom fabrications for all of our facilities.  As such, I was able to have them sell me two 1000 Newton columns and the associated controls.   Since I was already an established customer, I was able to get an upgraded set of 2500 Newton columns and associated controls last year.

 

I do not think Linak sells to the general public.

Well, yes of course you don't need to change something if it's working fine :)

In my case there was substantial drag on the axis when releasing the clutches and moving the axes. This was because the plugs had been pushed in too hard and for too long by overtightened clutch knobs. It wasn't all that much of a surprise given the mount's age and how many people have used it over the yea.

Fixing it was cheap and easy and the screw extractors make it so that you don't need to buy a tool from A-P or grind down your own using a flat-bladed screwdriver. I'm honestly amazed that this particular topic has garnered so much bike-shedding.

USNO A2.0 has an accuracy of 0.25 arc-secs and doesn't account for stellar proper-motion.

UCAC4 has an accuracy of 0.05-0.10 arc-sec and accounts for stellar proper-motion.

We do sell a full set of plastic covers for all the ports and doohickeys on the CPx control box as Mike mentions below.  But you won’t need to request them; each mount is shipped with the set.  Some folks choose to replace these with metal covers later.  I hope this is helpful.

Ah, perfect, when the mount is ready I will ask for one.

 

Mine will be kept inside when not in use, so plastic is likely to work fine.  But when in use it’s a heavy, heavy dew environment so covering unused ports is a goodness.

Hi Linwood

Actually, Astro-Physics offers a set of plastic covers for all of the connectors on the GTOCP4/5 and the mount motors. You will have to call them to order a set. The interest in the metal covers is because they are more durable, and they will stay put, but as a minimum you should get a set of the plastic ones. I think they run about $15.00.

Note that the DL2 is available in three thrust capacities – 1000 Newton, 1500 Newton and 2500 Newton (220#, 333# and 555#).  I am using a dual column system so I went from a 440# lifting capacity to a 1111# lifting capacity.

Thanks for the response Howard.  It was just 4 perimeter holes, as you thought.  I cleaned them out with about 50 Q-tips with soap solution and probed around until I got all the dirt out.  There was never any gritty sound like the Ded bearings were contaminated so I figured it was fine and reassembled with my new tandem saddle rig.  All is well.

I have been using PlateSolve2 with SGP to do my APPM modeling for almost a year now and it only takes a second or two to solve with my laptop.  So, results can vary.  I use smallish detectors - ASI1600, ASI294MM, and ASI2600MC.  So I’m sure that is a factor.  I also use 1/2 frame with the ASI2600 which speeds things up.

I have the 1100 with encoders and have found a very successful very quick workflow using ASTAP-SGP-APPM.  You can turn off blind solving and it will very quickly move to the next point if it fails.  This is useful as I have the same issue with my horizon map not being perfect.  When the scope is pointing at the trees or the house, it just fails and quickly moves onto the next point.  This only happens for me near the horizon.  ASTAP is by far the fastest solver I have used and usually solves in under a second so you can turn the "Max Solve Time" parameter way down and it will fail very quickly.  I currently have mine set at 10s and am sure I could lower it to 2 or 3 seconds with no issues at all.  You may need to do a blind solve when you first set up the scope before you begin the pointing run.  [Screenshot: APPM - Plate Solve Settings Page]

On to the topic of how many points.  If you are only going after one target in an evening, you can run a narrow line at the declination of the target you are going to be imaging.  I typically use two lines spaced close together.  Here is an example of an 88 point model which covers 7 degrees of declination.  I can run this model in 1/2 hour.  And this is overkill, way more points than needed.  [Screenshot: Pointmap 1 example]

If you pull back on the RA spacing and tighten up the dec so that it only runs a single line of points at the exact declination of your target, you could get this down to 27 points, which on my rig will run in about 10 minutes.  [Screenshot: Pointmap 2 example]
