Hi Liam,

The coordinates do not match. It puts the scope very close to Porrima.

They are the following:

RA 12h 41m 39s
DEC -01 26' 57"

George,

Is battery life a function of just age (how old the battery is) or does using the keypad more to locate DSOs shorten the life span?  I rarely use the keypad to locate targets, using my planetarium program instead.

I just replaced a keypad battery (and a cord) (and I have another keypad which will also get a new battery as soon as I get some time).

It seemed the DB did not get lost when I swapped the battery... tho i might not have checked the Messier objects.

How long will the keypad memory persist without a battery?

Re: AP V2 Ascom driver slew speeds wrong #ASCOM_V2_Driver

David Arditti

Thanks for the other suggestions. I am still at a bit of a loss. Experiments using different USB serial convertors, and different cables, have not turned up any clear cause of the odd behaviour.

I am definitely finding the older driver 5.21.01 to be working better than the newer one, 5.30.10, as Ray said it might, but it is not consistent. Because the odd behaviours with driver 5.21.01 are only occasional, I've been noting them down when they happen, otherwise it would be easy to for me to think I am imagining them.

What I have noted is that using the older driver, setting the move rate to 12x sometimes results in a first button press giving a 1x slew, but then it is 12x on subsequent presses (this is not backlash). When set to 1x or 0.5x sometimes the motion is continuous after the button is released, and I have also seen continuous motion at 1x after the button is briefly pressed at 12x setting. This is not a mouse problem, as I have tried two mice.

I now feel I cannot be sure that I would not see similar behaviours with the hand control, as I haven't been using the hand control enough at slow slew rates to be sure. So I am not certain this is not an issue with something in the CP3 box. My latest observations are using the new V2 firmware that was certainly sent to me through air freight, just in an anti-static bag, so X-ray scanning damage as Joe suggests is possible. But then I first started to observe problems with the M firmware, that had previously had no problems, so that theory doesn't fully fit the facts either!

AP Product Catalog Database

Karen Christen

Hello Astro-Nuts,

In recent weeks a few forum members have mentioned it would be nice to have a repository of old AP catalogs and offered to create a website database.  This is a project we’ve had on our radar but have not had time to dig into, so we appreciate this has been taken on by some of our Astro-Nuts.

The website is here if you’d like to take a look:  AP Product Catalog Database   While you’re there, check out Tony Simon’s (aka Harley Davidson and Star Astronomer on YouTube) video of his catalog collection.

If you have old catalogs and would like to add them, you can upload them to the Files section of the ap-ug group or the ap-gto group on Groups.io.  They will be added to the database from there.

I’ll pin this topic on the Groups Messages page so it’s easy to find.  Many thanks to Holger Merlitz for creating the website and volunteering to steer this project, and all of you who have submitted your catalogs to the database.

And a challenge:  Can anyone find a catalog with the Hampden Ct address?

Karen

It is at https://www.astro-physics.info/index.htm?tech_support/software/apcc/apcc-download

You can navigate there from the main A-P hom epage by clicking Software Updates.

P.S. I agree with Mike's recommendation.  The ability to build GoTo and Pointing models in APPC-Pro / APPM alone is worth the price differential.
I also have the 1100 and started with APPC-Standard, but upgraded.

The custom battery is a bit expensive but once in every 10 to 12 years ain't too bad.  Removal and installation of the battery requires care but is straightforward as it reloading the database, though it can take a while.

I also went to the .19 firmware version.  Jury is still out on that one.

George,

This is good to know.  My replacement battery arrives by the end of the week and I will be swapping it out next weekend.

Re: [ap-ug] Catalogs

Boy, real catalogs in the mail, with no software to help prepare them.  Making even simple catalogs was an art form.

I had two of the 4" F6's.  One of my many AP APO related regrets was not keeping one.  When I coupled it with the early AP reducer/flattener (which I still have) it made a dynamite super sharp, super bright F4 telephoto.  In fact, my Olympus OM-1's meter had it at around F3.4-ish.

Hello all,

Just found my old catalogs. The first one is not David but the address is 839 Brae Burn Lane. You can purchase a 4 inch F62 assembly for $795 if you want the 4 inch F6 with a model 504 German equatorial mount, hex rings and stainless counterweights it will cost $1395!
A complete 6 inch F8 Triplet apochromatic system including the 6 inch refractor, equatorial mount, oak tripod, 8 x 50 finder, star diagonal and three ocular’s is $2595.
The next catalog I have is dated March 1988 then July 1989 and June 1991. They remaining catalogs are not dated.

I will be sending these to Tony to scan tomorrow.

Best,

Time for a battery replacement and a database reload.    The sole function of the keypad battery is to maintain the database.   Call or email me if you have questions.   Enjoy!

Re: Mach2 - Pollux not in correct position

Mike, you can look at the coordinates the keypad has for Pollux by pressing the > button after selecting Pollux. Check to see if they match coordinates taken from an online catalog,

RA 07h 45m 18.94987s

DEC +28° 01′ 34.3160″

If the coordinates don’t match, then the keypad database is corrupted and needs to be reloaded. Entropy can’t be totally defeated, so even if a battery is in good condition it is possible for a database bit to be flipped. If the coordinates DO match, there is something funny afoot.

Let me rephrase that.

Is anything else connected to the mount besides the AP hand controller?

I'm using my Mach2 with the AP keypad. It works perfectly in every way and goto's are spot on.

When I command it to go to the star Pollux, it slews to a position approximately 90 degrees to the East of where it should be.

All other objects are spot on so far.

Has anybody else encountered this with the Mach2?

Re: APCC

Hi Vince

I can't help you on the download, but George or Ray should be able to do so. As for which version to get, my two cents opinion - Get the APCC-Pro version. You may not use all of the functionality at first, but sooner or later you will be glad to have it, and it does not cost that much more.
