Hi
BTW, if you are using an Intel NUC, 19V is not necessary. They work just fine at 12V as per specs.
My NUC is an i5 with SSD, and thurnderbird 3 to 10G Base T adapter. It works reliably with no issues.
Might save a little space and battery power.

I used these and they work well for me. Comes under various brand names but all look exactly the same. I suspect they are from the same manufacturer.

I found that running at 13.3 volts, the CP5 control box was very sensitive to voltage fluctuations. If I applied power to the mount first and then turned on the (high end) NUC mount PC, the mount's power LED would immediately turn amber even just sitting at park. I could not slew at full speed either. The CP5 would indicate a motor stall during the high speed slews and show the amber LED again. The voltage fluctuation was short enough to not show up with my digital multimeter and was not detected by the battery monitor I use with the battery. (I did not bother hooking up an oscilloscope to see how long the voltage droop lasts but expect it is very short.)

So, I installed the 24 volt DC-DC converter. This solved the high speed slew issue and also the voltage fluctuation when powering on the NUC but introduced another issue I will need to solve. My interface to the battery is via a typical automotive 12 volt socket. The plug portion has just enough resistance in the spring loaded tip that it overheats when performing a long slew at 1800X. Doing several long slews in succession, I actually melted part of the plug without blowing the 10 Amp fuse in the plug tip. I will need to rework my battery box to provide a direct PowerPole connection bypassing the 12 v automotive socket to PowerPole pigtail adapter I am using for now.

The net of all that is that I will use the mount at 24 volts but will need to beef up my battery interface before using 1800X slews. For now, I'll use 1000X until I can wire in a dedicated 24 v PowerPole socket straight to the battery.

Refining Pempro PEC curves?

Tom Blahovici

Hi
I'm trying to understand how the refine process works. There are examples in the Pempro documentation, but they never show the resulting "Green curve".
So the idea is to do the following.
Take the initial PEC curves and upload them to the mount. Run the analysis again, and then add this to the first curve. What would that do? It's not well explained.
Explanations?
Tom

Re: AP V2 Ascom driver slew speeds wrong #ASCOM_V2_Driver

David Arditti

Thanks for the other suggestions. I am still at a bit of a loss. Experiments using different USB serial convertors, and different cables, have not turned up any clear cause of the odd behaviour.

I am definitely finding the older driver 5.21.01 to be working better than the newer one, 5.30.10, as Ray said it might, but it is not consistent. Because the odd behaviours with driver 5.21.01 are only occasional, I've been noting them down when they happen, otherwise it would be easy to for me to think I am imagining them.

What I have noted is that using the older driver, setting the move rate to 12x sometimes results in a first button press giving a 1x slew, but then it is 12x on subsequent presses (this is not backlash). When set to 1x or 0.5x sometimes the motion is continuous after the button is released, and I have also seen continuous motion at 1x after the button is briefly pressed at 12x setting. This is not a mouse problem, as I have tried two mice.

I now feel I cannot be sure that I would not see similar behaviours with the hand control, as I haven't been using the hand control enough at slow slew rates to be sure. So I am not certain this is not an issue with something in the CP3 box. My latest observations are using the new V2 firmware that was certainly sent to me through air freight, just in an anti-static bag, so X-ray scanning damage as Joe suggests is possible. But then I first started to observe problems with the M firmware, that had previously had no problems, so that theory doesn't fully fit the facts either!

AP Product Catalog Database

Karen Christen

Hello Astro-Nuts,

In recent weeks a few forum members have mentioned it would be nice to have a repository of old AP catalogs and offered to create a website database.  This is a project we’ve had on our radar but have not had time to dig into, so we appreciate this has been taken on by some of our Astro-Nuts.

The website is here if you’d like to take a look:  AP Product Catalog Database   While you’re there, check out Tony Simon’s (aka Harley Davidson and Star Astronomer on YouTube) video of his catalog collection.

If you have old catalogs and would like to add them, you can upload them to the Files section of the ap-ug group or the ap-gto group on Groups.io.  They will be added to the database from there.

I’ll pin this topic on the Groups Messages page so it’s easy to find.  Many thanks to Holger Merlitz for creating the website and volunteering to steer this project, and all of you who have submitted your catalogs to the database.

And a challenge:  Can anyone find a catalog with the Hampden Ct address?

I just replaced a keypad battery (and a cord) (and I have another keypad which will also get a new battery as soon as I get some time).

It seemed the DB did not get lost when I swapped the battery... tho i might not have checked the Messier objects.

How long will the keypad memory persist without a battery?

Jeff,

George at AP told me if I place the new battery next to the original one and quickly swap them out, the databases will not be lost.  I do not know how quick I need to be.  I guess I will find out as the battery in the keypad has not died, but I want to change it before it does.  BTW the battery for my keypad was $25 plus shipping.

Just had this happen to me as well.

The custom battery is a bit expensive but once in every 10 to 12 years ain't too bad.  Removal and installation of the battery requires care but is straightforward as it reloading the database, though it can take a while.

I also went to the .19 firmware version.  Jury is still out on that one.

Starting to reuse my Mach 1 mount after a few years and have found that although the stars and sol data base is ok. The messer database is corrupted - with things like Crab Nebula is in Ursa minor. Any one seen this behavior?

Jack,

It never hurts to replace it every 4-5 years before the database dies.

George,

This is good to know.  My replacement battery arrives by the end of the week and I will be swapping it out next weekend.

Jeff,

You should be good for 20 to 30 seconds…no rush, but I wouldn’t go get a cup of coffee while changing the battery.   <G>
