Here’s a link to the zipped log file.  The problem started this morning around 0700, as far as I can tell

Problem with Mach2 #Mach2GTO #APCC #Absolute_Encoders

David Johnson

I have a serious problem with my mount.  I imaged all last night, using APPM, with no apparent issues.  However, when I tried to do a Park 3 this morning, the mount acts like it is trying to Park, but it doesn't slew and apparently parks in place.  I have tried shutting down the computer and mount numerous times with no change.  The mount will connect to APCC, initialize, and manually slew using the arrows, but it won't do much else.  It will not park in any of the standard positions, acting as I described above, always parking in place.  Also, if I try to do a Home on the AE tab, it says that homing has failed.  It's obvious the mount doesn't know where it's pointing, because it says it's at a negative altitude, when the mount is clearly not.  Also, it says it's CW up, when it's clearly not.  The following may or may not be pertinent, but I figure it's better to give too much information than not enough to avoid back and forth.  The "ENC" button in the Telescope Position area is not lit.,  I'm getting time-out Comm error, although the fact that I am able to manually slew using the arrows shows that there is at least some communication between the mount and computer.  I'll make a zipped log file available as soon as I can get it transferred.

David,

I once had such “funny slew stuff” suddenly happening with my Keypad and AP-1200 – but with a new CP4,  a few years ago.
The previous old CP3 worked perfectly when hooked back up to either mount with the same cables.
I even made up a small circuit board with toggle  DIP-switches to test slews using only the mount’s manual Guider Port, taking the keypad, APCC, and PC ASCOM driver out of the possible causes.

Then Howard logged into my system via TeamViewer, and monitored what was going on in the CP4’s  firmware,  using his Remote Terminal app, for simple offline diagnostics, as we talked on the phone and I went through my switch toggles.

Howard, as usual,  very quickly discovered a possible cause of the firmware having suffered from latent static,  or X-Ray scanning damage during CP4 shipment, which may have zapped or weakened the IC, somehow, even encased in the aluminum cover.
Simple  repair after that.

Might be worth eventually doing the same AP remote examination of your system. An expert’s  pair of eyes, and skilled background, would surely help find you a quick solution, provided you have a repeatable test procedure.

Joe Z.

I have a 900GOTO CP3 with the V firmware and I use the latest Ascom driver 5.30.10. I have had no troubles with the slew rates either. Maybe its one of the serial to USB converters or maybe a bad cable.
Just a thought

But in both versions, sometimes a button press will do something different for the first press compared to the second. E.g 12x may look like 1x at first press and then be back to normal. Also, sometimes a control seems stuck – a brief press causes a slew, or a focus change, to continue as if the button were continuously pressed, and it can only be stopped by reversing the action.

All this is with my AP1200 GTO3, firmware V2. I also have an AP900 GTO2, firmware E. I've had no trouble with this with driver 5.30.10. So I don't see how this can be an issue with the latest version on older mounts.

I am controlling both through long serial cables connected to serial to USB convertors. I have several different types of these, so I'm trying to test if a faulty convertor could be the issue.

My friend also has an AP1200 GTO3 firmware V2, and says he is finding no trouble with the latest driver.

Re: The mount lost position after power off. #ASCOM_V2_Driver

Dear All,

I talked to George from AP and the solution he suggested worked. Basically, I have to manually park the mount. Then turned the power off and used telescope setup to change the setting “unpark” from “park 5” the position in which mount was parked manually. Next, I switched on the power to the mount and connected the mount drivers via sequence software (Voyager). Thereafter, in the mount driver I selected unpark option. Drivers asked for the confirmation and viola! My mount is back :)

Thank you to the AP support team and George.

Best regards,
Satwant Kumar

The mount lost position after power off. #ASCOM_V2_Driver

Dear All,

Several weeks ago I purchased a used AP900 GTOCP3 mount (Firmware: V). I was helped by a friend who is well versed with AP mounts for initial setup. Everything has been working well since then. However, during a recent remote observatory run, I had the mount powered off, and then when I started it, the sequencer program couldn’t connect to the ASCOM AP V2 driver (v5.30.10). On the next try, the mount connected successfully, and I manually parked it at position 5 and closed the roof. However, tonight, I managed to manually control the mount and sync the mount with the actual coordinates. The driver app shows that the coordinates have been synced, however, the mount cannot slew to the target or park correctly. For both park 3 and 5, the slew is below zero on the RA axis and I have to abort the maneuver to avoid collision with the pier. I tried 1) reinstalling the ASCOM drivers, rebooting PC and mount, tried older ASCOM mount drivers (AP V2 5.21.01). However, it seems nothing was able to solve the issue.

It's unclear to me what went wrong here. A suggestion/solution from members with a bit of experience would be very helpful.

Best regards,

Satwant

If you want to start to getting to know the software prior to receiving the mount, I believe you can get a temporary trial key.

APCC Pro license with new mount

I was certain I read something on this topic not so long ago but typically cannot find where, so apologies in advance.

The impending birth is now close so was wondering if the APCC license key is shipped with the mount itself, or is this something that must be obtained separately online?

Thanks
Bob

Hi David,

I've done this now and the V2 ASCOM driver is now reading Astro-Physics V2 Driver: v.5.30.10, 1200GTO
GTOCP3, Firmware: V2

However, the slewing behaviour is still the same: in the driver, a move rate of 12x gives a sensible result, but 1x
and slower are much faster than 12x.
Some of the changes in 5.30.xx involved changes to the move rate commands for the GTOCP4 and don't apply to the GTOCP3, which is now many years out of production. So, please try 5.21.xx as I suggested. You can install this version directly over 5.30.xx. Here is the direct link:

Thanks for the reply Ray.

Since you mentioned the firmware it occurred to me that maybe I should install the version V2 ROM that I bought
some time ago but had not got round to fitting.

I've done this now and the V2 ASCOM driver is now reading Astro-Physics V2 Driver: v.5.30.10, 1200GTO

This problem didn't start with the latest version of the ASCOM driver. It started randomly. This makes me think it is
more likely to be a hardware issue.

Doesn't hurt to have a good sword though :)

That certainly is a legendary mosaic. Made all the more impressive by the fact he can get away with no cable snags. What a dogs breakfast!
