Not to be picky, but they are called pocket protectors, and only the slide rule ranks higher in the engineer's kit.

Pen protectors! Wow that goes back a long ways. i used to wear one every day when I was a TV Technician! Back then I thought they were cool.

Jack,

I forgot that you have a side-by-side setup.  Those are a bear to balance.  As I recall, it took me nearly an hour to get my side-by-side solar setup properly balanced in all directions and axis the first time.  And your scopes are so much larger and heavier.

But at least the meter is helping.

All that said, if I could justify the cost, I’d sure like to get the AP gear-release retrofit kit their “new” mounts have.

Woody,

I installed the PowerWerx meter in line with the power supply yesterday and tested balance. Al was fine in RA with equal current draw while moving the mount slowly.  However, when I set the scopes parallel to the ground and moved the mount North-South, the current draw to elevate the scopes was higher than that to lower the scopes.  So I need to correct the balance on the OTAs riding on the mount.  And since I have parallel OTAs, I not only need to check balance on the scopes in the North-South direction, I also have to adjust the parallel dovetail East-West to make sure all imbalance is accounted for.

Thanks for reminding me about the meter.

I switched from a piggyback setup to a side by side setup and I found that it did help with flexure.  But I have a permanent OBS so I only had to balance it once. It did take longer to get the right balance but it was easier that I thought it would be.

A problem with a side by side setup is more declination pier restrictions than with a piggyback setup.

Mike,

I don’t have a definitive answer to that question, but my very heavy (12 lbs. I think) Losmandy side-by-side saddle seems quite solid and rigid for the small but heavy refractors I put on it.

I’m sure others will correct me if I’m wrong, but I suspect that the lower scope position (closer to the mount’s pivot points) of a side-by-side setup potentially make tracking and guiding slightly more accurate.   But that’s a wild guess.

The discussion about side to side systems has me wondering - Which has less flexure; side to side or piggyback ?

Jack,

I’m surprised nobody from AP has responded also.  I know there was a retrofit kit available for my old Mach1 and I thought they had them for all the AP mounts of our vintage.  But I just checked and they’re not showing ANY quick release gearbox retrofit kits now.

Woody,

When I started this thread, I was hoping someone from AP would chime in about if or when a retrofit for the quick release gearboxes would be made available for my AP1600.  I assume that that will not become a reality and I will have to live with what I have.

No, I'm afraid not at this point in time. Hopefully we can make them in tandem with the next run of 1100 parts. We could not have a full production crew at our shop for many months until the restrictions were lifted, so we are totally behind our normal schedule.

Is this true also for 1100 mounts?

Re: Mach2 - Elongated stars

Bill Long

I did notice a huge difference in using the clutches to balance versus my Mach 1 I had. On my Mach 1 the DEC axis was always really hard to feel out in terms of balance. The Mach 2 is very much like it's bigger brother the 1100. Easy to balance and the clutch knobs on the Mach 2 are really well placed and easy to work with.

hello Yanzhe,

I have done some more digging and testing with regard to your guiding results. You had said that your Dec axis is not balanced. Unbalance puts strain on the worm teeth which increases friction and can inhibit smooth motion at the sub-arc sec level. For example, a 1 lb unbalance at 30 inches distance produces 10lb of pressure on the worm teeth. The resulting friction is then 10 times what it would be if the axis was properly balanced. High static friction on the Dec axis causes stick-slip motion as the axis is being nudged along in small steps during a typical guiding run.

In RA the unbalance is not as critical because the worm is constantly turning, and the dynamic friction is much lower than the static friction of the Dec axis.

We made the Mach2 with clutches that can be loosened to achieve good balance. If you fully loosen the Dec knobs with the mount in Park 4 or 5 position, it should be balanced enough to not move on its own. It should feel light in both directions and stay put when you let go of the scope. Try to get at least this much balance on your rig, and you will see that it will guide exceptionally well and give you the performance that you want.

Ray,

I am able to run "AP Log Zipper", there are 2 files shown in the app: ap.ini and Setting.apdb, however both were dated 12/29/2018. Maybe I did not enable ASCOM log.

The AP V2 ASCOM driver, which you must use with SGPro, comes with a log zipper utility called "AP Log Zipper". You should be able to find it from the Windows start menu by typing that name. The utility will grab the log files for X number of days in the past. If you can't find it, you probably didn't install it when you installed the AP V2 driver. In that case, just reinstall the AP V2 driver and select the option to install it.

BTW, you can use APCC with SGPro. In fact, it is recommended. An APCC Pro license comes with your Mach2 mount, but you must contact A-P to get it.
