1100 RA Assembly to FSA at Top of Tripod

Jeffrey Wolff

I am ordering the 1100 with extended temp encoders. I currently use the 900 on my Rob Miller TRI36M tripod that has the FSA top which is currently attached to the 900RPA which mates to the 900.

Is there a quick connect solution for mating the RA assembly to the FSA at the top of the tripod that uses hand knobs verses using six 5/16-18 X 5/8” socket button head cap screws and 5/16 flat washers?

So, I got my notification today, and ordered one with the absolute encoders.  It's a relative bargin, getting only a 7% price increase.

Re: Connection Issues

Hey Ray,

Thanks for the heads up. I did have the SRO guys put the network switch
(mine) on the IP power switch so I could reboot when an issue arises. Also
talked with Howard for a bit and checked settings just to be sure. As SRO
plugged into the IP power switch it was reset then and I asked about a new
LAN cable. We ran as is last night and it stayed connected so no cable for
now. Should it act up again we'll switch that out.

I don't see any reason for the bounced email but the CenturyLink has it's
issues from time to time. Hope to be a new service and fiber before long.

Hi Steve,

I looked at your logs and the switch to backup port was caused by a
legitimate network connection failure, and not because of an invalid
command.

I doubt this has anything to do with the new version of APCC. It could be a
faulty network connection, a duplicate IP address was introduced to the
network, or maybe the IP address of the mount changed? (e.g., reassigned by
DHCP)

Seems since the last APCC Pro update, as a time reference only, the
connection on the remote system at SRO on the AP3600 has become
unstable often not making a connection or connecting to the IP address
only to later fail back to the COM address. Thinking that maybe it was
a corrupt setting I restored a backup of the settings and rebooted.
Tis seemed to clear that problem until I checked this morning to find
it on COM3 again. Before it wasn't connecting at all sometimes. It's
unclear to me where to look and how to feel confident on fixing the problem.
After all a secure and solid connection is most key to successfully imaging.
The sky is supposed to be clear tonight even if the seeing is questionable
but at least it should be able to open and attempt to image.

As a reference point my AP1200 on the same updated version of APCC Pro
worked all night here at home only being sidelined due to clouds
rolling in around 4am. Same connection methods, LAN and COM backup,
both with
CP4 controllers and updated firmware, drivers, and SW versions. Any
suggestions on getting the remote AP3600 back to a reliable status?

My Mach1 is between a rock and a hard place

Nick Iversen

Due to trees, my Mach1 is currently between a fence and a wall and I dare not slew because of the risk of a wall crash. Not a problem because I can manually slew RA then Dec then RA to get to my target without hitting the wall.

But I'm curious and I enjoy a good puzzle. I wonder if I can find a park position that lets me slew to the target with a GOTO.

It would be useful to know the formula that the Mach1 uses to decide how to slew. Anyone? It's not obvious - slewing from Park 3 means that both RA and Dec axes move simultaneously. But from Park 4 it goes Dec then RA. And when I use a positive meridian delay the RA axis moves twice.

So if I know the formula I might be able to solve the puzzle.

I assume you do not have the original shipping boxes AP uses?

AP ships them with custom foam that encases the mounts RA & DEC axis. There are 4 boxes. They include the RA axis, the Dec axis, the counterweight shaft, and a box that includes the accessories.

As to the hand controller I forget because I kept the controller from my Mach1 and never needed another with my 1100, 1600, or Mach2 mounts.

I would be very careful as to how the mount is packaged. Perhaps AP can send you the two boxes they use for the RA & DEC axis at a cost but I believe well worth it. They ship world wide and know how to make sure they arrive in one piece.

What I do when I ship any AP equipment is DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, and DOCUMENT. By that I mean take pictures. I show pictures as I pack each component. Then at the shipper once all labels are on the box I take 3 pictures of each box.

In the above picture taken at FedEx you will note numbers I put on each corner of the entire box. Also note that the box is at an angle with the corner closest to the camera lens. All you have to do is take this picture then rotate the box 180° and take your second picture. Now flip the box over with the bottom up and take your last picture. You now have DOCUMENTED this box with 3 pictures prior to the shipper accepting the package. Do this to each box. If something were to happen you can prove how you packaged it and the condition of each box.

Here is what I have in my notes as to weight & size of the 1100:

BOX 1 RA AXIS:
19" long X 15" wide X 16" high @ 31 lbs
BOX 2 DEC AXIS:
16.5" long X 12.5" wide X 16" high @ 21 lbs

Make sure the RA & DEC axis are locked down. That's how I did it.

In this video I did you can see an example of what AP does in shipping mounts. It should start at the proper point in the video. https://youtu.be/BRjWX7rna20?t=449

Hope this helps.     tony

To explain further, the RA and Dec axes are supported in their cartons with foam blocks so that the gearbox is suspended in air and is not in contact with packing materials. The prevents the gearbox from being jammed during shipment.

We normally ship it with the worm coupled. However, great care must be taken to protect the gearbox from being jammed into the mount, so there cannot be any pressure on the gearbox to push it further into mesh. You can unlock the gearbox via the lever (turn it ccw) if you want to make sure that there won't be any pressure on the gears.

The two axes come separate. When you get them, the Dec axis attaches directly to the Ra with a dovetail system. It is straight forward and easy to do.

Subject: [ap-gto] Shipping an AP1100

I would like to have some details about the best way to package an AP1100 and would like to know how Astro-Physics ships it.

Does it originally come in one or more boxes? What are their dimensions and how heavy are they?

If in one box, does it come in one piece with RA and DEC bolted together?

Should the worm be coupled to the gear? Does it matter?

Is the hand controller in the same box?

Kind regards

Horia
