Question for you, a little off topic I guess, but if your observatory was not 300 feet from your house but about 80 miles, would you feel confident in its operation? Assuming you had reliable comms between the two naturally.

Will do. I also got a new router in the last few days, and this router does not show the IP address of the mount until it is connected. That is strange since my old one did.

Re: Find my CP4!!! How annoying!
Pete Mumbower
Great to hear you got the new address. If you can log into your router, you can lock the CP4 to that address via a "reserve" function. Basically the router will only give that IP address to the CP4 mac address.

Re: Find my CP4!!! How annoying!
Tom Blahovici
Thank you guys so much! The scanner worked. I had been entering the IP address manually and gave up at 192.168.1.155...it was 157 lol...
This is nuts though. The tool should be in the APPC or astro-physics folder. One should not have to go through so many hoops to get this. Anyways, you guys saved my weekend. I'm going to write a utility to do this myself and share it here if I can. Thanks again!!!

Re: Find my CP4!!! How annoying!
Pete Mumbower
If you have not tried it yet I would reboot the router, wait a couple of minutes, then reboot the CP4. The DHCP function in routers sometime puke out and will stop handing out IP addresses which the CP4 should be requesting on each power up.

Re: Find my CP4!!! How annoying!

Hi Tom,
Three things I would try:
1) You could use an IP scanner utility (such as
https://www.advanced-ip-scanner.com/) and
scan the entire subnet (use the 3 first bytes of your computer's IP address + .0/24. e.g. if your IP is 192.168.0.16, type-in 192.168.0.0/24 in the search bar of the scanner app). If your CP4 actually has an IP address in the same subnet as your computer,
it should find and list it.
2) Use the following math (from the CP4 manual) to calculate the default IP address and connect directly to your CP4 through an ethernet cable. Then
change the IP address of your network card to 169.254.0.1 with subnet mask 255.255.0.0 :
3) If you still can't find it, use the IP scanner app again to scan the entire 169.254.0.0/16 subnet. That could take a couple of minutes as it needs to go through the 65,000+ possible adresses, but should find it in the end.
Hope this helps...
Sébastien

That’s a beautiful image. Ha luminance worked a treat to tame down the noisy channels.
Did you use both telescopes to collect this data or only one?

Tom,
Sometimes router have a hard time showing new Ethernet clients. A utility that can help in this task is Advanced IP Scanner. It will give all the clients on the network served by the router and if the CP4 is on it, it will find it. Is using a USB cable out of the question? Cheers, Luca

Finally got around to processing the heart of the Heart nebula, IC 1805. This was a difficult image for me because of continual thin clouds that prevented getting some of the fainter narrowband data. I managed to shoot 10.5 hours of H-a but only 3.5 hours of OIII and 5.5 hours of SII. The latter two took a lot of noise reduction to bring in. Fortunately the main detail is in H-a, so I used that for a small amount of Luminance. Most of the frames were imaged unguided, the other half was guided.

When we had the problem in Chile I improvised by using a frame with the fans mounted with 4 rubber bands for each fan. That solved the problem and allowed us to do some imaging before new fans were installed.

It was still plenty cold enough to reach my -10C set point without issue. Long story short, every single sub that came in had perfectly round stars. The difference seems obvious to me. With the fan operating as normal about 3/5 subs came in with elongated stars. With the fan disconnected every sub was perfect.
The problem is that I'm not exactly sure what to do about it. Noctua is generally regarded as the best brand for silent and vibration free fans, but they do not make the size I need (50mm). I did buy some fans that look better than the stock ones I have, and I'm going to try some Noctua silicone rubber mounting things that are supposed to help isolate the fan from the case (if they fit on the camera). We'll see how that goes. In any event, this is no longer an Astro-Physics related discussion so I'll look elsewhere. joel -- Roland Christen Astro-Physics

Re: Version P02-08 now available for GTOCP4 and GTOCP5 control boxes
Thanks for the reply.
The first time I tried loading part 2 I only saw "File OK" and "Download OK" I refreshed the browser and tried again. Then I got the "Resumed Operation" line too. So, when I didn't see the "Resumed Operation the first time I assumed that the process was hung up.
