I have added a new section to the Software Updates page of our website for version 5.xxx and added a link to a document that discusses upgrading older keypads. Check it out

Yes, keypads with serial number 1568 and higher can download the new software. The function of FOC and RA DEC REV buttons has changed in the new program, so the buttons on the current keypads are labeled differently.  You can simply use your current button pad and memorize the new functions or will have the opportunity to upgrade the button pad for an additional charge. See our website:

Re: Multi-star guiding

Your skies must be way better than mine, or the multi-star aspect of the Maxim guiding somehow average out the seeing across  the three stars for you.    I need to read up on this to understand how it takes advantage of the multiple stars and my guess is some kind of averaging which can filter out seeing to some extent.
I just picked up a full frame 60mp ASI camera with filterwheel and OAG.    I plan to try the OAG but have had limited success in the past.  I do have a lodestar which is the guide camera I'd use with this kind of setup due to its sensitivity.     I really enjoy the flexibility and FOV fo the guidescope, but maybe I have some amount of error as a result of the differential flex.    The precision movement of the mach2 makes it a joy to use.

I have a machine shop...

However a long ADM dovetail bar combined with one or two ADM dovetail brackets and one or two XY stage dovetail brackets, combined with a drill press and some bits, 1/4-20 or 3/8-16 taps will do the job.

Or any competent local machine shop.

Or order a long ADM dovetail bar and have it shipped to me. I will drill and tap the right holes in the right places and then mail it to you.

James, I have a Staraid, I met the designer in Namibia last year. A very nice item,
the pitfall is no dithering is possible. I will guide on around 20 stars, It uses
a pad or phone to control. It can be a bit finicky to connect . It
is more in line of a highly evolved ST-4. It does guide quite well though.

It's a bit serendipitous that you've brought up this topic! Just yesterday, the PHD2 developers released a development preview build of PHD2 2.6.9 that has multi-star guiding implemented. It has been in testing for the past 2 or so months, and this is the first public release where it's available.

I used it for the first time last night during a 10 hour long dusk to dawn session, imaging StDr 56 and then M81/82 in Ha. Using APCC Pro with a fresh model and a recent PEC, my Mach1 guided in the mid-.40's arcsec RMS on average, and down into the mid-.30's whenever the wind that was present decided to completely die down. My pixel scale is 0.888 arcsec/px. I got fantastic stars and the only throw-aways were due to some cirrus clouds that blew through in the early morning.

I guide using a Baader Vario-Finder with ZWO ASI290MM-mini camera.

Hello fellow Astronuts,

I've been meaning to try something new (for me) in my guided imaging. My setup consists of a 160EDF refractor on a mach2 encoder mount, a QSI-683WSG camera with off-axis pickup, and a Lodestar guide camera. I do all of my imaging with MaximDL Pro6 which has a multi star guiding function. Up to now I have used single star guiding and so i have to pick a guide star and let the guider do its thing. That's an extra step, and since I'm lazy I decided to let the program guide on the whole enchilada using the multi star guide method. So, how did that work out for a 20 minute exposure? Well see below:

Rolando
Notes:
The guiding was effortless, extremely accurate (partly thanks to the precision movements of the Mach2 mount), and required no thinking on my part. The Lodestar guide camera is really tops in my book. It picks up stars in every part of the sky, even in star-poor regions. My guide exposures are 5 seconds with 1 second delay between exposures. My Min Move for both axes was set to 0.02 seconds (which is 0.3 arc sec), and the aggressiveness was set to 8 out of 10 since the seeing was quite good. Outside temperature last night was 25 degrees F. The peak values reflect the dither moves between exposures in case you're wondering.

The California Nebula did not fit into my camera's field of view, oh well. Thus I'm in the market for a larger chip camera for Christmas

I have the Superstar guider, which I chose for its pixels being smaller than those of the Lodestar.  When using the QSI's OAG, I have had instances where there were no usable guide stars within the parameters I set in CCD Commander (which selects the guide star automatically).  A specific object where I had this problem was M64.  The scope is a TEC140ED, 1030 mm FL with the flattener.

Re: Capacity check on AP 1100

Yup, that may be the way  to go in the end, but it is an expensive test..  Not a big fan of dismounting  and  remounting the two OTA's  to switch them out. Hoping to get it usable  in one unit as it is much easier to  use one or the other on a whim if they are both mounted up at the same time, or compare views back and forth with one set up. I have only had SCT's and  am very curious how this TAK TSA 120 would  do in comparison.

It tracks very well currently with the SCT  right now with  an ASI 2600 camera at about 2080 mm focal length (reducer)  for astro  photography..  Don't want to  lower that ability too much if I add in the refractor..  Guessing the refractor  would  be  much more forgiving at it's focal length though along with the better pixel scale of the camera..

Guessing  this new set up  would be fine for  visual for sure though..

Just hoping  for a bit more of a definitive answer to  ease my concern before making the plunge..  :-)

Quite often I use 2-scope and even 3-scope tandem bars when doing solar outreach. Makes it a lot of fun to compare white-light filters with h-alpha and calcium-k views, for example. Or monocular views with binoviews.

When setting up a tandem scope config, I use a pencil on the floor to find the balance points of the various equipment combinations and assemblies and then mark them with a small bit of tape or an adhesive dot that I can use for a reference when mounting stuff up on the mount.

I think it will be fine as a fun experiment. It won't be as rigid as it was before, but that's to be expected. And if you don't like the setup enough to make it a permanent solution,  you can always easily revert back to your previous configuration and you will have the tandem setup that could be re-deployed in just a few minutes.

Hello AP Folks,

My last post was mentioning adding a refractor  to my AP 1100 to go along with my 14 in Meade LX850 67 lb SCT. After adding up all the  additional weights of the refractor and side by side configuration from the ADM  rails and saddles, it will put my  total weight at about 110 #'s give or take a couple  depending on eyepieces..

Will this be ok, as in not affect  my guiding and  such  as long as it is all balanced out  correctly? I use and off axis guider when  doing  any photography.

Thank you for your advice!

David
