Absolute Encoder Upgrade; do I need PEC anymore?

Rick Darden

Hello All,

I just purchased the encoder upgrade for my 1100. Is PEC obsolete now? And are there any best practices or things I should know vs running the mount non-AE? The mount is at Dark Sky New Mexico (I live in FL) and I am planning a visit out there to do the install and routine maintenance in a couple of months.

Just want to get any advice I can get to be prepared as much as possible.

Re: CP3 Power Connector

The one I have used a thread with a cig plug on the end. The threaded bit pops off though. It's pretty old. So, it's not really securing the cable any longer. In light of that, I figured I would just use the PP cable I have to power it.

Bill,

You’ve got it right.  Just make a pigtail with the 5.5 x 2.1 DC plug on one end and PP on the other.  That’s what I’ve done.

They’re harder to find, but the “best” solution for CP3 power connectors are the threaded ones – such as the original that AP provided.  It took me awhile, but I found the threaded 5.5 x 2.1 DC connectors and made up my own adapter cable to PP.  the advantage to the threaded ones is that they don’t accidentally loosen or pull out.

Simple question here -- on the CP3 box I assume the 12V power accepts a 2.1x5.5 center positive 12 volt cable - correct? I would like to just use a Powerpole cable I have here vs the cig plug one.

I also use 5 min subs at times, especially when satellites go streaking across the field. That way I don't get every exposure with streaks. Until 11pm here i get satellite streaks in long exposures ~ 20 min or more, so it's not possible to get good data.

I'm shooting in very light polluted skies, the Moon was up and bright, so i was pleased that i was able to record some very faint stuff.

No guide scope was used, no field flattener, just the 160 refractor straight to the 8300 chip. Larger chips would need a flattener of course.

Just noting that there is vertical banding visible in the image. (and I realize this is just a test image).  Might be worth looking into when you want to take a "pretty picture". ;-)

The negative lead on the motor popped off. Its coming back to you guys for repair. Ships out today via UPS air. I knew I should have just removed the axis to do that part, I am betting some extra gravity was at play and put more tension on the wiring harness than I had anticipated. Lesson learned. 🙂

In the meantime, I get to play with the Mach 1 so I am not too sad.
