Hi,
Does anyone know where I can get instructional videos and also tips in general?
Any videos?

Thanks

I'm wondering what other Mach2 users are experiencing with power usage with their mounts.

Using a Powerwerx watt meter, I'm seeing about 1.05 amps at 13.8V while tracking, as much as 5.15 amps while slewing.  I'm powering with a Pyramid PS-15KX supply, and it gets hot.  (Still indoors due to lousy weather).

These motors are drawing a lot of juice!  Is that to be expected?
I checked out mine early on as well, and found that its current draw higher than the specs, at 12V, but was dealing with other things so haven't fed back the numbers.   I haven't paid a lot of attention to the 18V current numbers, which should be lower, because while it's plugged in I have all the juice that I need.

Max,

The driver can report Latitude, Longitude, Altitude, Azimuth, etc. and is ASCOM conformant so it's not clear what Voyager is asking for. I don't use that application so maybe someone else will have another suggestion.

Also, if you are using APCC you might try downloading and installing the new build I just posted.

I installed the latest driver. It did not help with this problem.

Microstepping means that the steppers must always be under power. Full steps can sometimes mean you can put the motor to sleep. Especially when using worm drives off of the stepper.

Thanks, Christopher.  I kind of forgot about stepper motors and their holding/stepping power requirements.  I made an Arduino based stepper focuser system a couple years ago and programmed it to sleep after twenty seconds, just so it wouldn't use a lot of power for hours on end. :)

See what PHD2 says about why it is best to disable backlash compensation settings in the mount.

Why must DEC backlash be off in the ASCOM driver when guiding?

Tom Blahovici

I was browsing some forums and looking at the latest ASCOM driver for the AP mounts and I noticed in the documentation that the DEC backlash should be set to 0 when using autoguiders.   The question is why?
My current setup is an AP600e with a TAK FSQ106 and an STL11000 using the autoguider chip with TheSkyX. So 3.6 arc sec/pixel.  Now I find that when guiding (rate is 1 using pulse guide) the mount does a good job with an RMS value under .5arc sec, but I need to keep the aggressiveness down to one.  Any higher and the corrections tend to shoot over the target.
So I am wondering if the dec backlash has anything to do with this.
Thanks,Tom

Thanks, Ray.  Worked for me too.  Glad  you're announcing updates here.

The download links are in the post.

Some people wanted direct download links and an announcement when the updates are available. This is that!

I'll update the download link in a few days.

Re: APCC Standard v1.8.2.0 and APCC Pro v1.8.2.1

Thanks Ray. I dont usually have this problem, but APCC Pro cannot see that an update is available.
The download links are in the post.

Some people wanted direct download links and an announcement when the updates are available. This is that!

I'll update the download link in a few days.

Hello All,

I am announcing the availability of APCC Standard 1.8.2.0 and APCC Pro 1.8.2.1 (links below).

Most of the changes are bug fixes and are itemized here:

APCC - BUG Fix - Tracking rates were not working correctly for the GTOCP3 in 1.8.1.1.

APCC - BUG FIX - Prevent Mach 2 from setting HOME to be anything other than Park 3.

APCC - BUG FIX - The ASCOM driver can send values in exponential notation when the value is near zero.
APCC was rejecting this exponential notation.

APCC - BUG Fix - Commands starting with "G_" were rejected.

APCC - BUG Fix - Clear flashing scope view when user clears all errors.

APCC - BUG FIX - Settings were not always being correctly saved.

APCC - BUG Fix - Prevent possible overflow in Meridian Limits Add Point dialog.

APCC - BUG FIX - Horizons - some of the menus did nothing.

APCC - BUG FIX - Horizons - Fixed a number of display bugs and made the displayed data more useful.

APCC - BUG Fix - fixed an integer overflow error that would happen occasionally.

APCC Pro - BUG FIX - APPM - Slew would sometimes fail to appear to complete thus stalling data mapping
runs.

APCC Pro - BUG Fix - tracking rate correction was not always saved correctly.

APCC - Improvement - Moved virtual port handlers to their own threads to reduce latency when user interface
elements are updated.

APCC - Improvement - In the Meridian Tracking Limits Explorer dialog window, add a button to update Meridian
Inclination.

Re: Mach2 power consumption #Mach2GTO

Steppers always require more power/amps than servos.

Amps times volts equals watts.

Watts of electricity consumed converts 1:1 to watts of heat generated.

A typical AC-DC power supply is about 80-95% efficient, depending on design. That means another 5-20% of power consumption and heat generation.

Make sure your observatory and/or imaging setup is configured to minimize any impact these various heat sources will have on your local seeing.
