George,

Two questions concerning the new v5.xx firmware update:

1.  Anticipated release timeline

2. What specific features will it incorporate?

I’ve read some discussions that it will correct for orthogonality errors but haven’t seen an official brief from Astro-Physics.

Many thanks,

Ted

Re: Where are new models data stored?

Roland Christen

The models that we are working on (not the APCC APPM model) will be stored in the CP4/5. The keypad is simply a way to do the modeling routine. It stores nothing but gives you the GUI or instruction to complete a model. It basically guides you thru the steps to create the model. There are 2 different models depending on what equipment you have and what your goals are.

The CP4/5 stores the points, up to 64 per side, and does the calculations for pointing and tracking. It is a simplified version of a pointing/tracking model and will not tell you how far off your polar alignment is. It simply compensates for pointing errors and adjusts tracking in both axes with the polar alignment that you have.

This simple model is intended for keypad users. If you don't have a keypad and want more extensive modeling, we have APPC - APPM which has automatic image acquisition where you turn it on and come back in 30 minutes and have your model done automatically.  The keypad version of the pointing/tracking model requires hands-on operation. You physically click on stars in your planetarium program, acquire the image of the star, center it and manually enter that point via the keypad. You can also use a crosshair eyepiece for centering, but some kind of planetarium app (perhaps on your smart phone) is needed to choose the stars for your pointing/tracking model.

In the case where you do not have a planetarium program handy to create these star points, and you just want to do unguided perfect tracking, we have a tracking model (no pointing). This model maps the drift along the object's path that you want to image. You only need to measure the actual drift at 3 or 4 points along the image's path in order for the CP4/5 to calculate the exact custom RA and Dec rates that will produce perfect or near-perfect tracking along the entire path over the course of the night. I have tested this model extensively and it works very well. Unguided imaging with my encoder mounts is very accurate and appears to be as good or better than guiding for the same exposure times (between 5 and 15 minutes).

We also have a third routine that measures your scope's orthogonal error and compensates for it when flipping sides.

I hope I have answered your questions and not confused things further.

Rolando

Re: Rotating pier adapter #Polar_Alignment

Be careful how far you rotate the mount in azimuth!   The “north” leg should always be under the counterweight shaft or your mount/scope setup will become very unstable.

Seems you could just drill extra holes in the pier tube to allow more position options. You could also machine slots in place of the holes on the tube and use washers and bolts to clamp once rotated. that would give you perhaps another total of 10 additional degrees adjustment besides the existing azimuth adjustment in the mount. A machinist could easily build an adapter for what you want.

I am a hobbiest in machining and have a metal lathe and milling machine. When I leave my home observatory and go in field I designed and machined a cap that fits on a modified Meade Giant Field Tripod that takes the flat plate adapter and allows me to rotate the entire assembly if needed to reach the range covered by the mounts azimuth control. The Meade tripod has the advantage it can be adjusted for uneven ground easier than a traditional pier and that was why I went that way instead of a pier.

Robert,

You are correct.   If the keypad is updated to v5.xx, it will no longer work with the CP3 control box.   It may be a better decision to update the CP3 to a CP4.   You would then have all the additional functionality of the CP4 going forward (as well as having the v5.xx keypad working with both mounts).

As mentioned in above post....I have both a CP 3 with a 900 mount and a CP4 with new 1100 mount. It sounds like once the hand controller is updated it will no longer work with old CP3 box....or will it still work but will not give new features to CP3 (that would be ok by me)? Should I get another newer hand pad dedicated to CP4-1100 and keep old one for CP3-900 mount IF I want to have additional features on CP4 but still be able to use old CP3-900 mount. However, I like idea of backwards compatibility.

Re: Changing Counter weight and pierside orientation

Best way to always have the scope point correctly when you first get a mount is to send the mount to Park3. Then place the telescope into the rings, loosen the clutches, manually move the axes until the front of the telescope points toward the pole. Tighten the clutches. That's it, you are done.

Then I usually checkpark1, 2, 4, 5 to make sure that all parks are in the correct orientation. This is simply a first time double check that also will familiarize you with the actual orientations that your scope will swing thru. After that simply bring up a star or object and slew to it. Guaranteed to work properly if your time setting in your planetarium of keypad is correct. You will for sure bring the object very close to the center of your eyepiece/imaging camera.

Subject: [ap-gto] Changing Counter weight and pierside orientation

I am a new owner of a 1100AE. Off course,  my first RCal/sync put the counter weight up rather than down.  Otherwise, the scope was pointing correcting. Eventually, I was able to fix this but it required physical interaction with mount.
I could not any action to change counter weight position or pier side using the  APCC or AP driver. Does this feature exist?   It would be very helpful to use in this situation.

Thanks

Max

Does using a the same side tracking model help with unguided imaging?
Yes, you can create a tracking model with counterweight up.

Subject: [ap-gto] Advantages of Meridian features

I find the new Meridian features very interesting.
Most automation software does a pretty good just of flipping the mount now a days. So I ask what are the main advantages?

Obviously, there is some lost time if you have to flip.

Also, If you a have small chip on a OAG you have a lot of complexity after a flip.
You need a rotator to get the guide star back on the sensor if you flip too.

Are there other advantages?  Does using a the same side tracking model help with unguided imaging?

Thanks

Max

As mentioned in above post....I have both a CP 3 with a 900 mount and a CP4 with new 1100 mount. It sounds like once the hand controller is updated it will no longer work with old CP3 box....or will it still work but will not give new features to CP3 (that would be ok by me)? Should I get another newer hand pad dedicated to CP4-1100 and keep old one for CP3-900 mount IF I want to have additional features on CP4 but still be able to use old CP3-900 mount. However, I like idea of backwards compatibility.

Simply stunning, Jose.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen an image of NGC 1398 before.  Thanks to your work, it’s now one of my favorites.

Dear group, would like to share with you some images that I processed in the last months.

  • NGC 6752 : a big globular in Pavo (actually the third brightest after Omega Cen and 47Tuc)
  • NGC 1398 : galaxy in Fornax, exhibiting an interesting double ring
  • NGC 1531/1532 : a pair of interacting galaxies in Eridanus

Please review the NEW colum at my website :

Thanks for looking and best wishes,
